@shere & The Oscar: “Sultans” is a straight-up portrait of a working trad jazz band (although the song itself isn’t in anything like that style.). Guitar George “knows all the chords” and “doesn’t want to make it cry or sing” because those are exactly what sets a Jazzbo apart from a rock/blues/country/etc player.

Bowie has always said Space Oddity was written after seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey, which had a big impact when it was released. The (actual) US space program was also real big in the news and on everyone’s radar (so to speak) at that moment.

Rancid were the real Clash emulators, I thought. First time I heard one of their songs on "modern rock radio" in the 90s, I thought someone had discovered some unreleased Clash material. My hypothesis: After the Clash opened up the scope of punk, all those SoCal folks could do just about whatever they wanted and call it punk.

I was on a roadtrip with a friend this summer and tried to explain Boards Of Canada to them. I was having trouble doing that. The next day we heard SUSS and when I looked them up I found this on their website: "The catalyst behind SUSS, Holmes views electronic acts like Boards of Canada and shoegaze icons like My Bloody Valentine as more recent avatars of the “high lonesome” vibe that we typically think of strictly in terms of traditional roots music. In that light, you can trace the melancholic sprawl of classic titles by both of those acts back to Hank Williams. And in reverse, what is twang if not a form of ambience?"

@P-90 - I'm more into the Iron Chic vibe. He rightly took the belt away from that Marine meathead Bob Backlund but then was unconsionably robbed by that jingoistic overblown lunkhead Hulk Hogan. I got your vitamins and prayers right here, Hogan!

I believe there was a band in the 90s (or early 00s?) that tried to achieve a similar sound, wasn't there? But based on what we've heard here, this sounds like a better, more realized version of this idea to me.

There was a Bruce Nauman exhibit with ambient-sounding steel pedal playing on a loop at PS1 a while back. The actual artist playing the instrument was not Nauman, however. It was hypnotic and Suss really reminded me of that.
