Avatar 9:08am Joe McG:

Hey, good morning, everyone! Coming up at 11 today: Live music from SUSS. Hope you'll stay tuned!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am karlward:

I'd love to hear someone toasting the lyrics over this, probably on a megaphone.
Avatar 9:08am PKNY:

Just want it publicly known that I'm all-in for 3 hours of steel drums, @Joe!
Avatar 9:09am Joe McG:

@PKNY: One day!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Krys O.:

Ooh, Do you have the Esso Steel Band?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am LastWhiteRhino:

Nice cowbell in this one !
Avatar 9:11am Davee:

That was interesting
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

One time, Mary Wing's Three of a Kind segment was "Transmission" and she played this one.
Avatar 9:12am Davee:

Good cover
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Beast of Boonton:

I need more cowbell
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Ignatatus666:

This is so Fucking cool
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am melinda:

Thank for starting our Mondays with such wonderful themed sets, Joe.
Avatar 9:14am PKNY:

DJ Shadow has this version of "Cars" on a mix we put out around 2003 or so, genius stuff!
Avatar 9:14am Joe McG:

@melinda: I forgot my other steel band records, so the theme got a bit shortened today. Maybe I'll try again next week! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am Yes:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Krys O.:

It's all good, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am JtotheK:

@PKNY - I have that mix (Diminishing Returns from 2003, came with some coasters, right?), nice one!
  9:16am Brendan:

These guys cover a lot of rock on steel . https://www.panrocks.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am melinda:

@Joe that's it, I'm outta here!
Avatar 9:19am Joe McG:

@melinda: ha ha ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am DroneTree:

Check out the live session with Altin Gun that Sheila B did.
Avatar 9:23am Joe McG:

I agree with Drone Tree. Can someone post the link to that?
Avatar 9:26am PKNY:

@JtotheK: yup, that's the mix! A great two-part mix, some really nice garage/psych on the 2nd part.
  9:26am Listener Robert:

That "Transmission" contains a quote from...something I've been trying to place and can't. Like something from the Beatles, but I'm not sure. I can whistle that passage, but can't remember what comes before or after.
Avatar 9:27am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 9:28am PKNY:

Another great 'modern' steel drum band is Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band. They do more covers from the hip-hop/breakbeat angle, great stuff:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am steveo:

Good morning. Here's the playlist with Altın Gün
Avatar 9:28am Joe McG:

@PKNY: Love them!
Avatar 9:29am Joe McG:

Thanks, steveo! Check out that session, folks, really great.

I like this much more than the original :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31am sphere:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am steveo:

sure thing. that's a "LATIN SMALL LETTER DOTLESS I" by the way
Avatar 9:33am Marc Francis:

NO WAY! I love SUSS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am LastWhiteRhino:

Is "SUSS" kind, like David??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am steveo:

"Dotted İi and dotless Iı are separate letters in Turkish and Azerbaijani."
9:34am robyn and 6-yr old mini glistener ajax:

good morning from kutztown pa (and great songs joe!)
  9:34am Androu B.:

Damn, funny you played that Clash cover. I just bought "The Story Of The Clash" just recently.
  9:35am Listener Robert:

Now I remember more of that tune that was quoted in that version of "Transmission". It was with a lot of harmonica. I think it came from a movie.

Now I'm pretty sure it was "Midnight Cowboy".
Avatar 9:39am Joe McG:

Hey Robyn! Hey Alex! Hey everybody! @Androu: Wow, that comp gets trashed all the time every time I read about it. Is it really that bad?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

Steel Harmony video: youtu.be...
  9:40am Brendan:

I’m all for Turkish music on Thanksgiving
  9:41am Listener Robert:

Yes, confirmed by playing another recording! That Steel Harmony's "Transmission" contained a quote from the title track of "Midnight Cowboy".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am Phillippe Bastille:

Good morning, Morning Joe and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42am TheLoneliestMonk:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am pantz:

These covers are fantastic. Gotta check out H&M
Avatar 9:54am Marc Francis:

Ay! AY! Ay!
Avatar 9:55am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe, yes more steel pans, you could do worse than focus on Robert Greenidge and the Desperadoes (Despers). But you knew that already!
Avatar 9:55am Joe McG:

Well done, Brian, thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am The Oscar:

Mornin'! This cover illustrates what I've always thought was the funniest thing about "Crazy Train": It's a mid-tempo, major-key song about peace and understanding that happens to have the most evil guitar riff ever written.
  9:56am Brendan:

Can’t wait for the fingerpicked acoustic Randy Rhoads solo
Avatar 9:56am Joe McG:

@Oscar: Is it totally a hippie peace and love anthem! Perfect for H&M.
Avatar 9:56am Snoochienucci:

@the oscar yes its weird but also kinda makes sense in this way lol. either way kinda hurting my brain a tad for some reason
  9:57am Brendan:

Flute! Marshall Tucker, take that!
Avatar 9:57am PKNY:

I applaud the flute taking on the guitar solo on "Crazy Train"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am steveo:

this is amazing
Avatar 9:57am Snoochienucci:

yeah that was some tasty flute action right there
Avatar 9:59am Joe McG:

I'm glad you guys like flutes, it gives me ideas for my next premium....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am Hughie Considine:

You could call it "Flauting Convention," @Joe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am pantz:

Just no poopy flute, please. We get enough of that on Wednesdays.
Avatar 10:00am Brian in UK:

Never understood the need for nose flutes. Messy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00am steveo:

searched google news and got "Did you mean: Hymen & Metal Funnel"
Avatar 10:01am Snoochienucci:

@steveo thats quite the rabbit hole to dive down!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am steveo:

i already climbed right out!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am queems:

i love this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am sphere:

A lot of people find it hard to believe that Ozzy is basically a hippie.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am sphere:

Sultan of Swing is really great.
Avatar 10:07am Brian in UK:

Never bought many singles but this was one of them. Did not venture any further with DS. Good to hear it after so long.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07am steveo:

this is a great song; my spouse loves this song,, we're going to listen to this set at dinner tonight
  10:07am Brendan:

Would love a show (or premium) full of demos , bed tracks , isolated vocals etc
Avatar 10:07am Snoochienucci:

Dire Straits are awesome. Had the privelage to see Mark Knopfler this summer at the beacon and he was incredible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am The Oscar:

Great song, but it just occurred to me how funny the line is "Check out Guitar George / He knows all the chords." That kind of seems like the faintest possible praise for a guitarist.
Avatar 10:10am Brian in UK:

This came out over here when Pub Rock (sad name if ever there was one) started, it kind of captured the feeling.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am queems:

my mom used to play this one mark knopfler album over and over again- i forget what it's called, but it had a duet with james taylor about the mason dixon line
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am steveo:

@oscar it's like money for nothing

Digging the subtle little differences of this Sultans take
  10:11am sim:

After Mark Knopfler toured with Emmylou Harris, he sounded more Gordon Lightfoot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am steveo:

i liked the rough edges
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

@sim: Ha ha ha
Avatar 10:13am Rocky Horror:

The Rough Edges... Sounds like a good band name
  10:13am Brendan:

Props to guys like Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham who hand pick guitar in rock bands and still get amazing tone /attack. They def found their niches.
Avatar 10:14am Rocky Horror:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am steveo:

"Rough Edges. 183 likes. Our band covers songs from classic rock bands Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Creedence Clear Water, Tom Petty, Thin Lizzy..."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am steveo:

no The though. better with a The.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am steveo:

The Rough Edges senden ein dickes Dankeschön an die Villa Nachttanz! Das war ein super Abend mit tollen Bands gestern in Heidelberg!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am steveo:

Check out the Rough Edges String Band and then come see them live in Harrisburg, PA when they play during Susquehanna Folk's Volunteer Celebration on October 22nd at 1-3 PM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am steveo:

(ok i'll stop -- this set is still blowing me away)
Avatar 10:18am Brian in UK:

Joe, ever tried to play Zaireeka by the Flaming Lips?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19am sphere:

@ The Oscar - From what I know about jazz guitar, chord inversions are a real big deal. So "knowing all the chords" is a big compliment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am The Oscar:

@sphere I stand corrected! Should've known better than to question the Sultans.
  10:22am Brendan:

@sphere amen. ‘Comping’ chords behind a soloist in jazz is a tightrope act sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am pantz:

I give up. I'm just gonna clicky-star the whole ding dang show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am steveo:

Avatar 10:26am Joe McG:

Today is the 50th anniversary of the release of the album this song was originally on (in the UK).
Avatar 10:26am Hubig Pie:

And then it all went wrong
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...I'ma go on limb & say this Boowie feller was the stuff...
  10:27am Brendan:

These versions are just magic to me. Like listening to it the first time. Goosebumps.
  10:30am P-90:

@shere & The Oscar: “Sultans” is a straight-up portrait of a working trad jazz band (although the song itself isn’t in anything like that style.). Guitar George “knows all the chords” and “doesn’t want to make it cry or sing” because those are exactly what sets a Jazzbo apart from a rock/blues/country/etc player.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Wiki say Bowie album 14th - but Half Century close...better than late!...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am steveo:

the wished bone song was kind of paul simon-y also, i thought
  10:31am Brendan:

Space Oddity was inspired by a conceptual mashup of The Odd Couple and Lost in Space
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am steveo:

i really liked the lyrics
Avatar 10:33am Joe McG:

@RR63: I think it came out in America on the 14th, but I may be wrong!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Visconti thot 'Space Oddity' too derivative - & passed on Producing the song!...dif assessment later...
  10:34am P-90:

Lots of Metal songs sound like straight bubblegum pop songs, or even folksy/indie in places, if you peel off the metallic arrangements .
Avatar 10:36am Hubig Pie:

Me thoughts that Space Oddity was inspired by that poor cosmonaut who burned up upon re-entry
  10:36am melinda:

Really liked the Hyemen and Metalfunkel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am sphere:

Since many metal tunes use the melodic minor scale, they can make great polkas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well we did go to the Moon. Kind of a big deal - as reflected in my sandbox toys just then...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

In many ways - Metal borrows from Classical - as in swing towards technical & away from Blues after the 1960s...
  10:41am P-90:

Bowie has always said Space Oddity was written after seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey, which had a big impact when it was released. The (actual) US space program was also real big in the news and on everyone’s radar (so to speak) at that moment.
Avatar 10:44am βrian:

  10:56am Greg from ZONE 5:

  10:56am paul:

@Hubig Pie: Wasn't the whole group in the KOC, along with Ellen Foley?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Ain't seen much - but Yosemite the most bootiful Nature I know...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am DroneTree:

What is the b-side to train in vain?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am mariano:

@paul: Yeah, I think the Clash were credited as "street riff raff" or something like that. A very brief scene where Sandra Bernhard tells them to shove off iirc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am mariano:

PS: was reading the comments in backwards order, so when I first saw "KOC" I thought it stood for Knights of Columbus, so for a brief second I was like "The Clash were in the KoC?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am sphere:

without the Clash, there would be no Green Day. discuss.
  11:02am Brendan:

The train in vain falls mainly on the plain
Avatar 11:02am Hubig Pie:

@paul, there was a scene with De Niro and Sandra Bernhard arguing and they were in the background street tableau
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02am steveo:

Without Green Day there would be no Nickelback
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am mariano:

Rancid were the real Clash emulators, I thought. First time I heard one of their songs on "modern rock radio" in the 90s, I thought someone had discovered some unreleased Clash material. Green Day always seemed to be ripping of SoCal bands like the Descendents. Till they broadened their horizons and started ripping off lots of other earlier bands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am TheLoneliestMonk:

@steveO that's a GOOD thing?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:05am steveo:

My hypothesis: After the Clash opened up the scope of punk, all those SoCal folks could do just about whatever they wanted and call it punk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am TheLoneliestMonk:

oh, kenzo does like to torture us every now & then.
was that payback for not making the october hellraiser in full??

I was on a roadtrip with a friend this summer and tried to explain Boards Of Canada to them. I was having trouble doing that. The next day we heard SUSS and when I looked them up I found this on their website: "The catalyst behind SUSS, Holmes views electronic acts like Boards of Canada and shoegaze icons like My Bloody Valentine as more recent avatars of the “high lonesome” vibe that we typically think of strictly in terms of traditional roots music. In that light, you can trace the melancholic sprawl of classic titles by both of those acts back to Hank Williams. And in reverse, what is twang if not a form of ambience?"

@P-90 - I'm more into the Iron Chic vibe. He rightly took the belt away from that Marine meathead Bob Backlund but then was unconsionably robbed by that jingoistic overblown lunkhead Hulk Hogan. I got your vitamins and prayers right here, Hogan!

SUSS reminds me of the sounds on CDs that accompany some of Willy Vlautin's books.

Hey everybody! Buy tickets to see 'em live in NYC at The Sultan Room – NOV 20. I think it's going to be a great setting and the sound will be top.

Lovely set from SUSS. Perfect Monday morning jams...

Eno + Morricone is a great combination.

Madison? I can see it from here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Ike:

I believe there was a band in the 90s (or early 00s?) that tried to achieve a similar sound, wasn't there? But based on what we've heard here, this sounds like a better, more realized version of this idea to me.
  11:34am melinda:

They should come to Portland ME
Avatar 11:37am Hubig Pie:

Throw in an Angelo Badalamenti vibe too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Sailor:

This is really wonderful
Avatar 11:38am βrian:

If that's the relocated supper club you were talking about, it's not Madison. Hayward, I think.

love this trippy calexico meets eno (airport tunes) vibe

Avatar 11:43am Joe McG:

I'm glad you guys enjoyed the set! They don't do many live shows, so if you have a chance to catch them, do! @Brian: Thanks! I couldn't remember. I've never been to Wisconsin, unfortunately.

Thanks for the show, Joe. Excellent, as always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56am Ike:

There was a Bruce Nauman exhibit with ambient-sounding steel pedal playing on a loop at PS1 a while back. The actual artist playing the instrument was not Nauman, however. It was hypnotic and Suss really reminded me of that.

@officina, ah thanks, I was thinking of A Small Good Thing but I couldn't remember their name!
