This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Hello Flash, may I come in?
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

Oh please do, Chresti!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm passiflora:

oh yes
Avatar 7:02pm Flash Strap:

hello Passiflora! yes indeed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm doctorjazz:

Love that buzzsaw sound Gato has!
H, Flash and Flashers!
Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

He plays like he's on fire all the time, it's so distinct! Hi Doc!
Avatar 7:06pm hyde:

hello! missed last week live and might be sporadically available live tonight but wanted to mention the Godzilla music show was AMAZING! totally capped off my month of watching multiple Godzilla movies on TCM every Friday night.
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde! That's so great to hear, you have no idea
Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Tonight's show is a little more half-baked as it's been a busy week to say the least but I promise it should be edible
Avatar 7:13pm hyde:

@Flash haha when i listened to the show in the archive i was so sad i missed my chance to opine on stuff i had seen (again). what was great was TCM of course showed the Japanese cuts (i think all the ones that are in the Criterion box set) and there was so much that i had missed because when i was a kid the American cuts took out most of the plot of a lot of those movies and just left in the rubber monsters
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

i say, "should be edible" then hit play on notorious free jazz assault Machine Gun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm Michael 98145:

bring it
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: I've been watching some on the Criterion channel but to be honest I haven't seen that many, hit me with some favorites if you want
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm chresti:

Avatar 7:14pm hyde:

@Flash s'ok. this is one of the great Euro free jazz records
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

just saw Shin Godzilla, it was really pretty great I thought
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Hi Michael! hell yeah brother
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

@hyde re: MG: really is, a colossus of its kind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm chresti:

@should be edible
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm chresti:

I hear a monster in this track
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

we're eating whether it tastes good or not
Avatar 7:19pm Little Danny:

Hey Evan and all explorze
Avatar 7:20pm hyde:

hi LD!
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

Hi LD!
Avatar 7:20pm Little Danny:

Hey peeps
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:24pm Michael 98145:

that was -some- Gojira attack
Avatar 7:25pm hyde:

@Flash a lot of the Godzilla movies are fun but sorta rote. I do really love Destroy All Monsters because it's such a free for all. (And i once saw it on a 16mm print at the Amherst Public Library, which is one of my favorite movie screenings of all time). From my kidhood the one non-Godzilla Toho flick i have always worshipped is Attack of the Mushroom People.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm chresti:

Hi LD!
Ha Michael!
Avatar 7:26pm Flash Strap:

Destroy all Monsters is so much fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:27pm chresti:

It's monster time around the clock, worldwide.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Michael 98145:

1954 was the year of the first film. As well as one of my all-time favorite films, Seven Samurai. Takashi Shimura.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:29pm Michael 98145:

Great set so far, i must say.
Avatar 7:29pm Flash Strap:

one of my favorite actors ever, his performance at the end of Rashomon wrecks me every time. wrecked thinking about it
Avatar 7:30pm Flash Strap:

@chresti: you said it pal, they just keep coming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:34pm WR:

Just connected, started listening. Hi all.
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

Luzmila Carpio is a wonderful Bolivian singer who frequently sings Quechua and Aymara songs, two indigenous groups of Bolivia. Great artist
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

Hi WR!
  7:36pm iArthurA:

hiya Flash and fellow explorers -- just chiming in for Luzmila the Legend who transitioned to a political career as Bolivia's ambassador to France later in her life. Absolute badass with such a mesmerizing voice
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Michael 98145:

BTW, the USPS just put out some fine Tyrannosaurus Rex stamps...
Avatar 7:37pm Flash Strap:

Hi iArthurA! she's a true hero of song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm chresti:

Thanks Michael 98145
Avatar 7:45pm hyde:

@Flash oh! btw, a couple weeks ago i was reading a collection of pieces by an old Florida naturalist, Archie Carr and you mentioned you liked that sort of thing. fwiw, i'm now reading his The Windward Road which is a thing from the 1950's about his trips to the Caribbean to study the green sea turtle. I highly recommend it.
Avatar 7:48pm Flash Strap:

That sounds really good Hyde, I've been meaning to check out that first one you mentioned. I'm currently reading both The War of the Worlds and Zama
Avatar 7:50pm hyde:

@Flash i gotta read (and see) Zama
  7:53pm John from Florham park:

Hello fellow explorers
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Both very good, though I've yet to finish the book
Avatar 7:53pm Flash Strap:

Hi Coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm Phillippe Bastille:

Howdy. Did anyone see a pair of mittens? They're black with little kitten ears and face embroidered on them. Kitten mittens.
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

Hi Bastille, i'll keep my eyes peeled
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm WR:

Hi RevRabNov63. Interesting comments you made on the Bodega Bollywood show yesterday. Wish I could have responded in real time. Hope Gary does another Bollywood show soon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm Phillippe Bastille:

Thanks. Cold as heck here...
Avatar 8:07pm coelacanth∅))):

Phillippe the dog was using them last saw

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm Phillippe Bastille:

@Rev: gary is a king & his show is a marvel, i'm just happy to be here
Avatar 8:10pm coelacanth∅))):

Avatar 8:11pm Flash Strap:

weirdly discordant take on Peanut Vendor
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Phillippe Bastille:

So far my Wake n Bake ball cap is safe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm Phillippe Bastille:

This music is very nice, by the way.
Avatar 8:12pm Flash Strap:

love the rickety sound across this whole record, a recent find i'm still rather taken with
  8:12pm Doug Schulkind:

¡Buenas noches, hermano Flash!
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

¡Hola, mi Compañero!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm melinda:

hi chums
Avatar 8:15pm Flash Strap:

Ah, hello Melinda!
Avatar 8:16pm coelacanth∅))):

i have this tune on a tape i bought from some peruvian "indians" at a "pow wow" (festival) but it's somewhat simplified.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm WR:

Evan, great curve you gave us with the late 50s power Latin version of Caribbean peanut Vendor, and then back to the mountains.
Avatar 8:16pm coelacanth∅))):

...(carnival madness that is)
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

@WR: most credit belongs to the LP, honestly. It's another panorama, so to speak, which I love because you get those transitions & curveballs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm WR:

Oh, me wrong, we stayed with Mexican/ Cuban.
Avatar 8:20pm Flash Strap:

@C & WR: Carnival Madness was definitely in a Peruvian idiom I think
Avatar 8:25pm northguineahills:

Oddly, I've noticed that only the Mexicans, Colombians, and Cubans understand my Spanish down here. Myave b/c in NYC, there's a regional pidjin language know as Spanglish....
Avatar 8:26pm Flash Strap:

hi NGH!
  8:27pm Doug Schulkind:

So much smoldering loveliness.
Avatar 8:28pm TDK60:

Good evening diners, dancers, conversationalists.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:29pm WR:

Just reading earlier comments and found out about your show last week, definitely book marked for archive listening. I need to find and scan a photo of me next to some late 70s Godzilla kitch I saw in Fukushima.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm chresti:

Los Millonarios were a kick!
Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

Hi TDk!
Avatar 8:36pm Flash Strap:

I love the Millonarios/Diplomaticos, just good clean fun
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Loves Godzilla more than I can say.
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

the only good song on this LP, but what a groove man
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm chresti:

In marimba heaven now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm melinda:

I thought I detected a disco tune in that last one but I couldn't place it.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

@Melinda: you must be right, it's definitely a marimba cover of *something*
Avatar 8:53pm Flash Strap:

all time great LP cover: img.discogs.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm chresti:

I support your decision to play whatever you're listening to.
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

thanks Chresti, sometimes it's all I can do!
Avatar 8:55pm Flash Strap:

he is so incredible on this record, what drums
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm chresti:

I didn't notice @melinda, I don't know many disco tunes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm melinda:

Vuela Robin Vuela= Fly Robin Fly. One of my favorite disco tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm WR:

That Shiraki cover is funny for a swinging bop record. Is he the drummer?
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

@WR: yeah he's the drummer
Avatar 8:57pm Flash Strap:

@Melinda, I must know it to hear it, but the name rings no bells
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

hey hey
Avatar 8:59pm Flash Strap:

Hey hey UM
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm WR:

Hi UM. Have you announced you show plans for tomorrow yet?
Avatar 9:01pm Flash Strap:

it's quite a rendition, this
Avatar 9:03pm northguineahills:

Love the artwork...
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

damn this is probably the best track on this album, so good, can't believe I've never played it till now
Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

in a weird way, this has a similar structure to Shiraki's Jungle Drums
Avatar 9:09pm northguineahills:

Why is the Electo Keyboard Orchestra new to me!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

WR, have I ever done that?
Avatar 9:10pm Flash Strap:

EKO has quite a lineup:
Akira Okazawa, Hideo Ichikawa, Hiromasa Suzuki, Ken Yajima, Kentaro Haneda, Masahiko Satoh, Masao Yagi, Sadayasu Fujii, Shigeto O'Hara, Shuichi Murakami, Yuji Ohno
Avatar 9:11pm northguineahills:

This is gold, and mid-70s Japanese, holy smitherwizen!!!!
Avatar 9:11pm northguineahills:

Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

I will never stop playing Laurie Spiegel, my love for her music only grows with each play
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15pm WR:

@UM, As a new listener I have a small data set, but I recall once or twice, maybe...
Avatar 9:15pm Little Danny:

Avatar 9:16pm northguineahills:

Still waiting for East River Pipe to cover songs about the East River.....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18pm Uncle Michael:

Once in a while I'll give advance warning for something special, but not often.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Neat-o track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Phillippe Bastille:

Seriously, Flash? I'm trying to put in some extra work hours here and now I have to stop and clicky-star. Yeeesh!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

A lot of people know the first show of the new year will be the listener request show. You'll hear more about that after Thanksgiving.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm WR:

OK Uncle Michael, will tune in tomorrow and see what the day brings.
Avatar 9:21pm Flash Strap:

My apologies Phillippe!
Avatar 9:21pm TDK60:

This is perty.
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

@WR: you can trust him, I'll vouch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm WR:

I just found out about Laurie Spiegel recently via WFMU, and now know want to get anything and all I can be her.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

She's incredible, WR. very very good impulse to accumulate her work
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm WR:

*by* her...
  9:26pm Dean:

My listener requests are adding up:
1. Alberto y Los Trios Paranoias, "Fuck You"
2. Sutherland Bros. & Quiver, "Champion the Underdog"
3. same, "Arms of Mary"
4. Leo Kottke, "Arms of Mary" from his 1995 Live album
...and so forth.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

and very happy to hear WFMU hooked up the introduction
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

@WR: I read ya loud and clear, never fear a typo
Avatar 9:27pm Flash Strap:

Hi Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Full Sci-fi mode works for me...
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

the sound on Zeit is so very good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

A little Forbidden Planet (phenomenal soundtrack) - a little Floyd - & distinctive anyhow. Yup.
Avatar 9:31pm Flash Strap:

adore the Forbidden Planet music, soundtrack hall of fame that one
Avatar 9:32pm Flash Strap:

but what I really meant was that the sound is better on Zeit than the very aesthetically similar predecessor, Alpha Centauri, which I like a lot but sounds much more flat
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Uncle Michael:

Dean, I've played one of those four times. I lead the pack.
  9:34pm CC:

I believe Star Trek stole some sound effects off of that movie!!!
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

Why hello CC!
  9:37pm Dean:

Gonna guess "Arms of Mary"? The original?
  9:37pm CC:

Hi F.S..and y'all... just surfing around!!!...:)O(:
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37pm Uncle Michael:

Yeah. It's kind of in my wheel house. It's pretty great.
  9:39pm Dean:

Check out the Kottke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Uncle Michael:

I must!
  9:41pm Doug Schulkind:

I’m playing some Shepp tomorrow, too.
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

LOVE Shepp, consider me on board for tomorrow's selection
  9:43pm Doug Schulkind:

Also presenting an extended Jimmy Scott celebration. Because I love him.
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

oh wow that sounds like a show to remember! what's a favorite Shepp for you, Doug?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Love this.
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

(or anyone, please say the Shepp LPs you like, if you'd like)
  9:45pm Doug Schulkind:

That’s like asking which is my favorite lung.
  9:47pm CC:

I'm not trying to plug anything or nothing but I decided two nights ago that the guitar jam on Southern Man off of 4 way Street is now in my top 5 for live perfomances for guitars!!!
Avatar 9:47pm Flash Strap:

i know, i know! it can't be done
  9:48pm Doug Schulkind:

I will play something from Blasé tomorrow. The counterpoint of Shepp’s gruff tone with Jeanne Lee’s velvety voice is unovercomeable.
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

@CC: i haven't heard that one in ages but Neil Young on guitar in that period is extremely godlike imo
Avatar 9:50pm Flash Strap:

@Doug: my favorite Shepp track is the title track on Blasé, there I said it! Maybe it has to be tied with the title track of Coral Rock though
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

Jeanne Lee is outstanding on that, and everywhere else
  9:52pm CC:

@FS... take a listen...it occurred to me in a Godlike fashion after so many years..!..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Phillippe Bastille:

Been fun, time for bed. Thanks Flash! Stay warm everyone! And please, put the kitten mittens in the Lost & Found when they turn up.
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

i mostly don't love that album but i remember always liking Young's stuff on it, par for the CSNY course really. not that I'm a total hater
Avatar 9:54pm Flash Strap:

A pleasure to have you with us, Phillippe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55pm WR:

The BYG Shepp albums Malcolm & Jasmina, Shepp is one of my core faves so many more that i love.
Avatar 9:55pm Little Danny:

Come crash at the Cool Blue Flame everybody wfmu.org...
  9:55pm CC:

I think all four of them take turns swapping licks in that one by the way!!!
Avatar 9:55pm Flash Strap:

at least him and stills, yeah
Avatar 9:56pm TDK60:

Thanks Flash.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm WR:

Oh yes! Blase!
