Chris! Thanks for spending some birthday time in the Horse Zone! Happy birthday!

As successful as three days spent in a hotel conference center can be, Chris! I did get to eat some excellent fried chicken, so we'll call the trip a win.
  9:59pm
Chris Farrell:

Thank you Chresti! Outside of talking with my brother for an hour (he and his girlfriend have albums coming out) If You Lose Your Horse is the highlight of my day!
  10:02pm
Chris Farrell:

Net positive. I’m sure it’s nothing like interviewing people on the Red Carpet at the Met Gala, but fried chicken and hotel conferences are luxuries.

Franco Twinkie:

Be careful Sam! inferring that the aughts were anything but totally the bomb can potentially get you in trouble with some younger listeners....assuming you even have younger listeners.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm
Sam Segal:

Haha, Franco, as hard as I try to capture the Gen Z demographic, I just don't know if my brand resonates with Zoomers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm
Franco Twinkie:

Any way, my favorite Charles Lloyd album is Love In, so you know my completely opinion is useless.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm
Franco Twinkie:

Plus, I still can't type after fifty years of typing.
  10:14pm
Chris Farrell:

I’ve noticed I make a lot of 2000-2010 references and fellow students who are Gen Z often don’t pick up on them.

I asked a older student (maybe 45) if Flock of Seagulls sang I ran after a 2 hour lecture where very few comments were made.

He pointed out they might have been considered a 1 hit wonder but their hair will forever be remembered. It dwarfed my initial reference to the song “I Ran”.
  10:15pm
Dean:

Just two days ago I ran into a friend of mine with his, I dunno, 15YO? son. I was wearing a WFMU t-shirt. The conversation turned to WFMU, and the kid asked about the station. He seemed mighty interested, so I directed him to the playlists. Generation, schmeneration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm
Franco Twinkie:

Chris, I have noticed that Flock Of Seagull are bundled together with bands like Missing Persons and their ilk on the county fair circuit. At least they're working, right? Hair withstanding, I'm sure they mean something to somebody.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm
Sam Segal:

Hear hear, Dean! I feel like teens these days are well primed for freeform radio. The internet has obliterated allegiance to specific scenes and genres amongst a significant subset of music loving youth, I think.
  10:25pm
Dean:

Agreed, and I'll raise you two. Some kids -- teens, pre-teens -- have always found ways to tap into the cool shit. This kid, by the way, plays alto saxophone with his high school jazz band. I mean, c'mon!
  10:28pm
Chris Farrell:

I saw Blue Oyster Cult at a County Fair I was working on it Vancouver WA. If anything it gives purpose. I’m sure my brother would kill for a warm up act at a mid size county fair (other starting musicians as well)

Billy Strings is playing (or played) at the caverns in Tennessee where Silver Jews had their last show. Something I saw recently.
  10:29pm
Dean:

I don't identify myself with the cool kids, by the way, but I hung out with them, and they turned me on to real goodness. I remember the classmate who advised listening to Birds of Fire in 1974, when I was a little dork in high school, when the rest of us were listening to...hey!...Three Dog Night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm
Franco Twinkie:

I like kids. As a rule they are more well informed and polite that I was as a teenager, even though I praddled on like some sort of expert on what?
  10:35pm
Dean:

I bet you were entirely polite and to some degree expert, Franco.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm
Franco Twinkie:

Well, no. More like an aspiring smart-ass that didn't quite make the cut. But I have improved. At least now I can settle someones hash effectively. But what kind of skill is that?
  10:41pm
Dean:

Aspiring smart-asses that didn't make the cut were in fact the cool kids with whom I hung out.

I'm really resentful over how schools and all treat kids.
  10:43pm
Chris Farrell:

A good epitaph for my 27 years would be “I am no Eddy Haskell, I am trying. Sincerely”

Sams posthumous reference made me think of that.
Avatar 10:44pm
northguineahills:

a posthumous recording, so the composer was decomposing???? (I'll show myself out).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, to what degree is an august institution like UCB just an extension of the same old shit that goes along with been in school?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm
Sam Segal:

@NGH, haha, posthumous recordings...necro music...the final frontier of experimental music.

  10:55pm
Dean:

Not sure exactly what you're asking, Franco, but recall that I'm a librarian. Once upon a time not too long ago, these institutions were adored because their libraries had big dicks. The bigger the library (Harvard...), the better the school. Not so anymore, for better or worse.
  10:55pm
Chris Farrell:

I listened to “Mercedes Benz” by Janis Joplin for good luck.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm
Sam Segal:

What do you need luck for, Chris? You can get by on your good looks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm
Franco Twinkie:

NGH, I met Chresti when I was 27, so I would have to say it was one of my best years as well, I just didn't know it at the time.
  10:59pm
Chris Farrell:

Well thanks Sam. I was a extra in a movie with Allen Arken and I told him “your a great actor, your almost as good as me”. He gave me this look with one eye and eye brow raised up and we never saw each other again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm
Franco Twinkie:

I thought as a school librarian you would be in a perfect position to observe the behavior patterns of the young and come to some startling conclusions.

Yes, indeed. We are all children's librarians. Utterly condescending. Completely true. There are no startling conclusions.

Great reed player, Falzone. I played clarinet, then tenor saxophone, then bass clarinet. Surprisingly, I was not a great reed player.

Dean, of all people i didn't expect you to know that! ...although i always suspected your dislike for Eno is another game you play!
...album's called "(no pussyfooting)"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
coelacanth∅))):

lollygagging! i don't hear that much but when i do i imagine a little girl (animated, wearing clothes from the 19th century) gagging because she stuck her big swirly lollypop too far into her mouth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
doctorjazz:

Like this Pneumo..
Last minute horsin around.
  11:47pm
Dean:

Of course I know it! Once upon a time, I owned it! But you're right. I do not appreciate Eno. Have you all read Pete Townsend's interview in NYT Magazine? He gives shout-outs to Eno and...David Byrne! I admire Townsend, but I don't get the attraction to Byrne, not at all. No, I'm not a fan of Eno, certainly not a fan of Byrne.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm
Sam Segal:

Thanks for stopping in, Doc Jazz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
doctorjazz:

Dying to see the Byrne show, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm
coelacanth∅))):

i like David Byrne a lot, but i don't like his music much...since remain in light -the last good talking heads album.
from what i've read/heard/imagined i think he's a good man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm
coelacanth∅))):

i like his album with st.vincent, so i guess i do like some of his more recent work
  11:52pm
Dean:

I loved, and still do, Talking Heads' first single, "Love Goes to a Building..." Thereafter, very disappointing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
coelacanth∅))):

jeez. you don't like more songs about buildings and food?
fear of music?
those albums are Brilliant!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
coelacanth∅))):

...my life in the bush of ghosts?!?!
  11:54pm
Dean:

Nope. To my ear, they're not brilliant. They're dopey.

My Life...? I effing love that record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
coelacanth∅))):

i think you need to drop some acid.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth∅))):

(i'm just kidding! i say that because you say herb doesn't move you and more songs is that much more amazing when you're high)
  11:57pm
Dean:

One of the reasons I dislike virtually everything by Talking Heads is Byrne. He's a horrible vocalist, a second-rate musician, a show-off. I also have no sense that Weymouth has much talent. One of the reasons My Life strikes me is precisely his absence.

I suspect I would love LSD. More so, opium and heroin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
coelacanth∅))):

the thing about more songs is that it's understated, production-wise. i guess that's why it's not considered one of their best albums...but the arrangements are awesome -just subtle.
...i know that's not likely the reason you don't like it.
  12:01am
Dean:

You're right. I can't even get past the title of the album. Pretentious sons of bitches, those guys.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am
coelacanth∅))):

that took forever to post!

yes Byrne's voice is terrible. the main reason i don't like much of his material after remain in light.
i think it works for the 'heads prior to that though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am
coelacanth∅))):

oh man that title is just a joke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am
coelacanth∅))):

Thanks Sam! enjoy your time away.
