DJ GeorgyGirl:

HUGE apologies in advance but for reasons that I cannot fathom, today's show is three minutes short. Zounds!!! You'll have to enjoy a brief bit of the jukebox at the end before Greg's show :-)
  4:51pm
Martinibomb:

DJ Otto is pretty fantastic tho! I heard this Peggy Lee w/Jim Backus Mr. Magoo does the Cha Cha Cha after RRC today that was fantastic. And I'm a huge magoo/bakus fan and somehow have never heard that song -- like what the hell kind of incantation did Mr. Fab have to do to get that song into the digital stream?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There you go - I'm gifting three minutes of random music to everybody :-)
Avatar 4:56pm
Mr Fab:

Ha ha, isn't it one of the Wonders of the World that a Peggy Lee/Jim Backus-as-Mr-Magoo chacha record even exists?
  4:57pm
Martinibomb:

Yeah! where did you get that? It's not even on youtube like no one has it uploaded lol
  4:57pm
Martinibomb:

And how have I never heard it.. I love Peggy Lee, I love Jim Backus, I love Mr. Magoo. How did I miss it?? I feel like I have everything else by these folks
  4:58pm
Martinibomb:

I think being a DJ really humbles you sometimes. I listen to so much music but you can never hear it all Lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Here we go!
Avatar 5:00pm
Mr Fab:

Don't remember exactly, but i probly discovered it looking for "jim backus" on my-free-mp3s.com. Just checked and it's there. (Cuz, yeah, i search the 'net for jim backus mp3s, ok?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hello everyone! It feels like we were all just talking but a few hours ago ;-)
  5:01pm
Martinibomb:

Crazy that place picks up some interesting bits I always forget to check it! I use Soul Seek a bunch
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:01pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Ah yes - The Seeker of Souls ;-)
Avatar 5:11pm
spacebrother:

Listening! I am actually ready for my show early (rare.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Another record I borrowed from my local library - touching on what we talked about earlier :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi Greg! :-)

Hi all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Hi melinda! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Also - hello to Mr Fab, Rich, and Martinibomb :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The greatest ever song about a drug dealer - admittedly a legendary one :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:25pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I'm at my desk with one lamp on and this is all feeling very mellow and calm - a good vibe! :-)
Avatar 5:26pm
Linda Lee:

doesn't this sound nice!
hi hi! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm

Hey lovely Linda Lee! :-)
Avatar 5:27pm
Linda Lee:

if anyone can turn me on to Gerry Rafferty it's you, GG! :-D
context. context!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:28pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I do love dear old Gerry - very sadly missed but what lovely music lleft behind :-)
Avatar 5:28pm
Linda Lee:

mellow gold. :-)
  5:32pm
Martinibomb:

Stephen J. Cannell used that soft rock/yaht sound extensively - William Katt from Greatest American Hero even did a soft rock album called "Billy Katt - Secret Smiles" and of course Post/Carpenter are experts at that sound
Avatar 5:33pm
Linda Lee:

a growing *moneyed* demographic changed the music business, no? I don't think the incredible economic power of the baby boomers, sustained, was foreseen at all.
Avatar 5:33pm
spacebrother:

Oh no, I remember hearing this on my little transistor radio when I was a kid. Had no idea what was going on, but it was music, which was unfiltered from parents or anyone else, which made it unique.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think most teenagers of the 50s and 60s would be genuinely shocked that the Stones, for example, are still touring!
  5:34pm
Martinibomb:

I was sweeping floors in my Dads machine shop listening to all this stuff in the 80s. I still love it with extra reverb.
Avatar 5:35pm
Linda Lee:

you mean, if you'd seen the future then & let them know Mick would be onstage at 70?
Avatar 5:35pm
Linda Lee:

he didn't think he'd be doing it either.
  5:35pm
Martinibomb:

Sundown! Yeahhh. my karaoke specialty I can sing this one suppper ez always pull it out first to get comfortable
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Imagine their faces!!! lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm

Gordon! Always a winner with me :-)
Avatar 5:36pm

30 was old enough. but 70..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That whole Logan's Run generation ;-)
  5:37pm
Martinibomb:

Gordon is on tour right now!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:37pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Really??? I would love to see him!!!
Avatar 5:39pm
Linda Lee:

hmmm. Logan's Run! never thought of them that way.
what's your time frame here, GG? 72 - 78?
Avatar 5:39pm
Mr Fab:

If anyone wants to know why punk happened, play 'me this show. And tell 'em: now imagine you're a horny, energetic 16-year-old hanging out friends on a Saturday night, and this is the only thing on!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:39pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Good question! There's one rogue 80s record but it's mainly mid to late 70s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
Rich in Washington:

This is exactly the kind of music we blare through out household when the missus and I are working on something together. We fell in love with the Rhino Have A Nice Day box set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:40pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

This music makes me feel ... safe is the wrong word. Secure? Kind of "everything's ok".
Avatar 5:40pm
Linda Lee:

never the only thing on, though, Mr F. we had records!
  5:41pm
Martinibomb:

Yeh honestly this is how I remember music sounding maybe up to the mid 80s?
Avatar 5:42pm
Linda Lee:

as a Horney, energetic teen at the time, I can tell you we were listening to other things too. Bowie! Mott! Lou! :-)
Avatar 5:42pm
Linda Lee:

this new computer made 'horny' into Horney! why?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:42pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

love this song love this song love this song :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

And it's got cowbell :-)
Avatar 5:46pm
Linda Lee:

darlin as I recall AOR was album oriented rock, not adult.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
Rich in Washington:

yeah, GeorgyGirl. Safe. I think that's the key. A more innocent time for us, before we became jaded, drug-addled teenagers, before my morals were corrupted by Dr. Demento and late night radio DJs, Punk Rock radio, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:47pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It's an either/or - sometimes referring to album culture, but also with the adult charts via Billboard and so on :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
Rich in Washington:

Before buying that colossal CD collection, I had no idea who had done half of those really familiar songs I had grown up with.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I couldn't do a soft rock/AOR show without yet more Michael McDonald :-)
Avatar 5:49pm
Mr Fab:

I didn't know much about the cool stuff of the '70s til after the fact. I just remember hearing this stuff. Until the culture Rich mentioned hit me and got me actually interested in music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:49pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I love the familiarity of it :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It made me think about having a car when I was a grown up and my own coffee percolator for when my friends came over to hang. lol
Avatar 5:51pm
Linda Lee:

oh yes, definitely not 2 different things as far as the music went. I just don't remember the A in AOR as 'adult' specifically.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think part of me wanted to be Ron Burgundy ;-)
Avatar 5:51pm
Linda Lee:

six of one, half a dozen ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There's that rogue 80s record!
Avatar 5:54pm
Linda Lee:

were we lucky on the coasts with the cool stuff? don't think so. friends in the midwest were into the cool stuff too. different crowds, maybe. ;-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:54pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Maybe more access to touring bands?
Avatar 5:56pm
Linda Lee:

dunno!
maybe it was just an age thing. being, say 10 in '75 would be very different than being 15.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Well, hopefully this is bringing back some good memories for everyone :-)
Avatar 5:57pm
Linda Lee:

at 10 you'd be more likely to be listening to what the parents listened to, just because you're spending more time with them. at 15, less..
Avatar 5:59pm
Linda Lee:

I still lived in New York when this was radio ~ & New York in the 70s was really fantastic.
Avatar 6:00pm
Mr Fab:

"hopefully this is bringing back some good memories" - sort of a cross between happy memories, and frothing at the mouth due to my intense hatred of the Eagles!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@LL - How's the new computer going? Did you manage to salvage your files?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:00pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

@Mr Fab - sorry! Forgot! Oops.
Avatar 6:02pm
Linda Lee:

GG is nothing if not adventurous. :-D
not yet, kiddo. thanks for asking. the new computer is quirky. or I am. not sure yet which.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:02pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

There's an ELO song later ... you might want to leave the room for that!
Avatar 6:03pm
Linda Lee:

did that man say "the wagon wife"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:03pm
Rich in Washington:

I think with my wife and I, despite our divergent musical tastes, we have THESE songs in common, having been raised on pretty much the same local radio, etc.
We started listening to those comps and would go 'OH GAWD! THAT song again!'.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Yep ... and then threeways. Wishful thinking from him!!!
Avatar 6:04pm
spacebrother:

@ Mr. Fab - I'm right with you on that Eagles hate.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
Rich in Washington:

What about the Mercury Monarch Ghia?
Avatar 6:04pm
Linda Lee:

wow. :-D didn't recall that one!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:04pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh man. This is on my dead pet song list!
Avatar 6:05pm
Mr Fab:

nah, i don't HATE ELo. i don't really hate much, honestly. Apart from their sucky music, the Eagles were just frikkin EVERYWHERE. The endless, endless 'Hotel California" was everywhere, and we were all supposed to love it, and there was something wrong with you if you didn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I hear you :-)
The song "popcorn" brings me out in hives. lol
It was EVERYWHERE and it still drives me nuts.
Different strokes and all that :-)
Avatar 6:06pm
Linda Lee:

me, i like challenging myself to hear fresh. if there's something good there, let's hear it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:06pm
Rich in Washington:

Yeah, I'm with you Fab. Just that they were so goddamn inescapable.
Avatar 6:07pm
Linda Lee:

and yes, they were.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:07pm
Rich in Washington:

I LOVED Popcorn. It's also one of the first songs I remember downloading off of Napster back in the day.
Avatar 6:07pm
Mr Fab:

Certainly in Southern California. (But maybe everywhere?)
Avatar 6:08pm
spacebrother:

@ Fab - those are my exact reasons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:09pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Find the thread, Georgy ... find the thread ... lol
Avatar 6:09pm
Linda Lee:

they were. there's my point about being a bit older & away from the house a bit. you weren't restricted to hearing what was on the radio or stereo at home.
Avatar 6:10pm
spacebrother:

The songwriting and musicianship was great, but geezus, people (people at the time.)
Avatar 6:10pm
Mr Fab:

yeah, i love "Popcorn" too! But i didn't grow up with it. For some reason, i dont' remember hearing it til well into the '80s, when i started getting into Moog records. So i was not traumatized by it.
Avatar 6:11pm
spacebrother:

A UHF channel in LA (channel 52) used to play "popcorn" over their station ID when I was a kid. I'd sing along by popping my cheek. Annoyed everyone but me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Christ, that "Shannon" song really got to me just then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:11pm
Rich in Washington:

I remember hearing Popcorn fairly frequently on the AM station that my Mom listened to a lot and was also played on our school bus. This would've been the very early 70s.
Avatar 6:11pm
Linda Lee:

Toto! that's the 80s. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

So it is. Two rogue 80s records!!
Avatar 6:12pm
spacebrother:

I think this was supposedly about Rosanna Arquette.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

The Band of Exploding Drummers. lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:12pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

It was indeed
Avatar 6:13pm
Linda Lee:

exploding drummers??
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
Rich in Washington:

I also remember them playing Amen Brother. It was a station called 62 KGW. Real classic local radio with a sort of laid back morning drive time team. A far cry from later local radio. But they played a lot of songs that were 'kooky', mixed in with the usual AM fodder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:13pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Toto had a bunch of drummers who all met weird demises.
Avatar 6:14pm
Linda Lee:

really! and they still got drummers to pay with them!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

My daughter just came in and I said that I felt like a late-night FM DJ. lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:14pm
Rich in Washington:

Did one of them choke on someone's vomit? There's no way to dust for vomit.
Avatar 6:15pm
Linda Lee:

god, I hope it was his own!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:15pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

I think one of them got sucked into a lawnmower or something like that, and one drank weedkiller, and I don't know what else.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

When I was young and first learned that Hendrix drowned in his own vomit I thought he was in a bathtub and had thrown up so much ... etc.
Avatar 6:16pm
spacebrother:

Wow. Flashbacks. Wow. I like it and don't at the same time. Just have to Go With The Flow!
Avatar 6:16pm
Linda Lee:

oh my god!
the wicked witch must've had another sister.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

That freaked me out for YEARS
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm

I wonder what's the weirdest way a rock star has died?
I hate my brain sometimes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:16pm
Rich in Washington:

Oh, now THERE'S a picture!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:17pm

ANOTHER flashback! AHHHHH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:19pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

John Entwistle - heart attack in a motel in Paradise, Nevada after snorting cocain off a stripper's tits.
You know Moonie was waiting for him with a complimentary basket of fruit and a statuette.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Most rock and roll death EVER
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:20pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Considering Moonie and Mama Cass both died in Nilsson's flat - i wouldn't want to go there!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:21pm
DJ GeorgyGirl:

Roy Orbison died while operating a remote control toy plane. That's pretty
... weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:22pm

I think my prefered way to go would have been to have been brained by a television set hurled out a window of The Chelsea Hotel by Keith Moon. Alas, too late.
Avatar 6:22pm

both in Nilsson's apartment? I didn't know that.
maybe it's what they tended to do there..

I just bought a book for my husband today called The Show Won’t Go On about people who died on stage while performing, loving the ELO
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:26pm

2 greats repped in the Sheena stream, Tiny Tim, and Country Dick Montana, off the top of my head.
Avatar 6:27pm

I was just about to say: dying on stage has got to be most rock & roll.
dying in bed with a stripper is too close to the story about Rockefeller.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:27pm

Eric Morecambe and Sid James in the UK, and Tommy Cooper. All comedians.

I, too, have an enormous soft spot for this song :-)

Cooley had a weird and violent existence and consistently won "battle of the bands" contests with Bob Wills.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:32pm
