Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

@Sem: I went with Selby after Lowry, a lighter book than the dance one. Not in terms of content, but physical weight. I walk a lot in these days of transit strike, that factored in

I don't recall seeing Rob Brown live (seems odd I haven't, as b/tn Vision Fests and automatically attracted to any thing William Parker-related, you'd think I had). Alas, I'm off to salt mines to see what my sweat can procure,,,, salud mis amigos!

Jim Ryan:

I'm enjoying this. Last time I heard Rob Brown live was back in the early 2000's in L.A. shortly after Henry Grimes had been rediscovered and Wm Parker had somehow supply him with a green contra bass. It was a very hot day in L.A.

Playing a couple gigs with Alicia Mangan (tenor) and a free-style drummer plays around L.A. I should not have forgotten his name and bass player I came down with Krisitjan Bondesson.

The years of playing together with William is paying off in the closeness and beauty of your interaction here. Might be your best live set ever Dave. Or at least best today!!
Avatar 4:10pm
geezerette:

it's gorgeous.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
fred:

@Geezerette: I know people who teach noise at middle schools. It works because it allows experimentation and failing. And involves making their own instruments from cheap stuff. Jazz might draw the wrong kind of Kenny Gs, and it requires much more monetary investment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
ParUbi:

Hmm, what equipment does one need to teach noise? Just a microphone and ... anything, really. You have a point!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
coelacanth∅:

imagination and discretion are the primary tools used

@Fred: What I had in mind was a class I had at college which consisted of showing up at an on campus theater to hear Gerald Wilson, the instructor, and his well known friends playing together. No tests, no grades...just exposure to the music played in real time by some of the best musicians. Like this show we're listening to.
Thanks for mentioning the noise class. Makes me happy to know that!

More live music is coming right up on the Drummer Stream. Gina Bacon's SOMEDAY MATINEE is next, live from Nashville. Gina's special guest in studio is Taylor Alexander. Hopefully he'll perform songs from his solo album Good Old Fashioned Pain. Should be a great show!
