Hola Tony and James and Kay and all! Be careful: thelast time you played a Notre Dame tape, the church of the same name caught on fire...

Webhamster Henry:

Hi Tony - there's probably a good variety on today's show!
Avatar 12:04pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Yvang! Since Notre Dame is still standing, I decided I needed to play another cassette in the series.
Avatar 12:05pm
Tony Coulter:

Hola hi hello, Henry!

By the way, the compiler of this tape ("Graf Haufen") was still a teenager at the time (around 18 or so). He was a NDW prodigy....

@Tony: I missed Charlene Darling's release party last week because of the transit strike (and laziness) I'm still bummed about that, I really like her record

Haven't heard it yet! Would love to, though....

Heya, Cmurtha!
Avatar 12:24pm
Tony Coulter:

The inner workings of the accuplaylist tell me that someone on FMU has played at least one track from this tape on their show. I'm going to guess it was Jason Elbogen.

Does Ken award prizes for the person who plays the most never before played tracks? And if he does not, why not?

@Tony: She even has a video: www.youtube.com...
Probably more fun for me as it features other people I know (like other members of her band Rose Mercie)

@Tony: The WFMU playlist search page gives credit to Chris M Thomas Storck and Faye for playing tracks from this cassette. wfmu.org...

My guess is "Utilisation du Vieux Port" are (or is) from Marseille.
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

You are right! And they're a great group too. Should really play one of their cassettes on Tape Hiss (if I haven't already?).
Avatar 12:55pm
Tony Coulter:

What made you guess they're from Marseilles?
Avatar 12:57pm

Le Vieux Port is the famous place in Marseille.

Somebody's been listening to the Residents
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:09pm
Cmurtha:

I've been getting mad resident's vibes from a few of these tracks. Made me look up what residents songs WFMU has played - surprisingly not as many as I'd have thought.
Avatar 1:11pm
Tony Coulter:

I'm surprised at that too! I'd have guessed they've been played zillions of times
Avatar 1:20pm

What's wrong with "compiled"? Everything seems to be curated these days. thebaffler.com...
Avatar 1:33pm
Tony Coulter:

Self-released tapes from 1988 (like this one) almost always sound better, sound-quality-wise, than tapes from 1983 (like today's first tape). I guess big leaps were made over those five years in the quality of cheap tape decks and cheap home-recording equipment.
Avatar 1:34pm
Tony Coulter:

You're right, Fred. I did feel a bit pretentious saying "curated." It won't happen again.
Avatar 1:35pm
Tony Coulter:

If I say it again, you can curate my face.

shoutout to the mailman y'alls!
Avatar 1:36pm

Mailmen were super essential to the cassette underground
Avatar 1:37pm
Listening Out There:

Speaking of The Residents, someone on Instragram mentions that they've written a book called The Brick Eaters. Anyone read it?
Avatar 1:38pm
Tony Coulter:

Heya, L.O.T.! Haven't heard of that book....
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:39pm

the last thing I saw was them doing God in Three Persons at the MOMA and me being mad I won't be in the city for it.

I think the Resident, er... The Residents are going on the road in the US again shortly.
Avatar 1:42pm

These naughty vocals kind of sound like Nadine Bal to me. Can it be? Alain Neffe did master this tape.... (Nadine Bal and Alain Neffe = Bene Gesserit)

Tony Coulter:

@ Holland O: It is!!
Avatar 2:35pm

FYI: The accuplaylist froze up on me for a bit there, so I didn't ID one of the tracks as it was playing -- the cut after the Det Wiehl. I will insert it in a second
Avatar 2:39pm
Tony Coulter:

@ Fred: Who are NSB? Don't know 'em. Unless it's an acronym I'm not getting: like, maybe, The Not-Incredible String Band).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm

@Tony: Nihilist Spasm Band. You might have heard about them, no-good youngsters from London, Ontario

So, next week's freeform show falls on Christmas Eve day. Don't really want to play Christmas tunes, so I'm thinking of doing a U.K. folk special -- seems sort of holiday-appropriate, somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm

Maybe if you guys can get Bernie president, NSB could take it as a sign to reconsider
