British musicians wanted to distinguish themselves from the American folk/rock scene, so they mined the material that Cecile Sharpe et al researched in the dying throes of the post-Victorian Industrial age in the 1910s-1930s to make something more English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish/Cumbrian. Some imagined, some real, w/ Synergy of the current psyche rock/proto-prog movement. I recommend the book, Electric Eden by Rob Young for a full explanation.....

Dean:

In all seriousness in response to Cmurtha's tongue-in-cheek query @12:53, I suspect that sound was prompted in part by the revival of early music so-called authentic performance styles that occurred during the first half of the 20thC.

@Cmurtha: I have a friend who just legally changed his surname to his mother's, Serbajian (his father was never part of his life). His mother is Armenian, would the etymology cast that side of the family came from Serbia, say, from the 1870s Turko (Ottoman)- Russian Wars where what became Serbia sided w/ the Russian Empire and settled in Armenia...? (spitballing o'er here)
Avatar 1:22pm

@Tony: Dean and I will take that as an appropriate compliment as per the playlist.....

@PENTANGLE!!!(yes, caps are needed).

Hah, looks like I'd starred that PENTANGLE track a while back. As I rightly should have!
Avatar 1:40pm
Tony Coulter:

I wonder: Does it let you star the same track twice? Or would that be like voting twice (in the same election)?
Avatar 1:40pm
northguineahills:

Comus to us all!

james has good tastes...
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Cmurtha:

@north you know I'd have to look into it. Its an interesting theory, but I am not versed at all in Armenian names and naming conventions to tell you how accurate that.
Tony - it will let you star the same track twice sometimes if the system does not think of it as the same song or there is some variation in how its put in the system. I forget what, but I know I have one or two songs double starred for that reason.
Avatar 1:41pm
northguineahills:

@Tony: According to Kenzo, no. You'd have to unfave it first to refave it......
Avatar 1:43pm

@Cmurtha: I know European/Armenian history, but the Armenian language is still opaque to me.....

Hi there, Tony. Something about this era of British folk always felt Christmas-y to me. That Dickensian thing, you know. Flagons of stout mead. Wenches with puffy sleeves. Figgy pudding, goose for dinner.

People sleep on Donovan for no reason.
Avatar 2:33pm

Yeah -- he probably suffers from having had too much success. People feel they know his stuff (you know, the hit songs) -- when they really don't.

Unless you meant that literally. In that case, damn them -- Donovan is not a pillow.

Tony, not making a last minute request but curious. I see you've focused on 60s and early 70s and obviously there is much material of this sort from that time you've not had time for, but do you follow recent brit / Gaelic folk and if yes, do you know the Unthanks?
Avatar 2:49pm

@ WR: To be honest, I know very little of current brit / Gaelic folk. Have not heard (or even heard of) the Unthanks. But now I'll try to give 'em a listen....
