Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from January 3, 2020 Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

So who were Jerry Herman's orchestrators? It's very very 60s Show Tunes sound.
Avatar 7:23pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Herman's go-to orchestrator was Philip J. Lang. I'm glad you mentioned the orchestrators because they are the unsung heroes of musical theatre and music in general (and I'm a bit put out that there's a redline under the word orchestrator, as if they're not well-known enough to be in the dictionary...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm
Webhamster Henry:

Kurt Weill was one of the few who did his own orchestrations!
Avatar 7:26pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Yes! And in the non-musical theatre world, it's a sign of how extraordinary Brian Wilson was that he did all his own orchestrations (including the very complex ones in Pet Sounds!) Even his hero George Gershwin didn't orchestrate Rhapsody in Blue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm
Webhamster Henry:

Irving Berlin could only play in the key of F#... so he had help and a transposing piano!
Avatar 7:29pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

True, I love that about him, it's so random

Music levels seem low, listening in the car, had to turn the volume all the way up in the car, them when you went on Mic I got blasted.

My friend Neil Radisch did a Hunchback Musical back in the 90s right when the Disney version was coming out!

Bronwyn Bishop:

You're friends with Neil Radisch?? I discovered his version on Spotify (had never heard of him before) when I was looking for Hunchback musicals and played a song from his version along with a bunch of others in this show right after the fire: www.wfmu.org...

Love his version!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm
Webhamster Henry:

He's a composing fool! I used to work with him back in 92-93 or so.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Webhamster Henry:

I used to listen to Oh Kay! a lot - a really well produced studio album of a show that understandably had no Original Cast Recording.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm
Webhamster Henry:

In the same class as the excellent Pins And Needles with basically Babs' premiere recording.
Avatar 8:39pm
Bronwyn Bishop:

Well if Neil ever wants to do an interview, I am the interviewer for the job!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm
Webhamster Henry:

I wonder if he has any time, but sure. I also used to work with another musical composer at another job, Eric Grunin. Friend 'em on Facebook and see if they'll come out to Jersey!

Eric pointed me to this article, BTW. He participated in this program:
