@Ike: Jasmine ice cream is delicious
Avatar 12:11pm
Wolfgang:

Kölsch it is! People in Münster don't much care for it. Too weak for them, but I love it! When you're in Köln they bring you a second glass unless you stop them (the glasses are only 0.2 liters, so..)

Wonderful!

Ike:

Oh wow, I’ve had some excellent exotic ice cream flavors (black sesame, lucuma, soursop, extra stinky durian in the Bangkok airport basement) but I don’t think I’ve tried jasmine!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 12:21pm
Granny Spicy Tuna (they/them):

i pretty much like any floral ice cream flavor. what would freud dream about that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm
coelacanth∅:

the ice cream shop on main st. in new hope pa had it but i haven't been there in >20 years. i don't even know if the shop is still there.
the jasmine flavor was more like an essence and too subtle for me at that particular moment.
(favorite flavor there: rose)

That Hemphill/Wadud duet reminds of the time back in 2015 when rumors were circulating that Wadud had died. He had dropped out of the music world without a trace and hadn't performed or recorded in many years. Longtime listener Joel Wanek followed some connections and "found" Wadud and he consented to do an interview with Wanek and the superb cellist Tomeka Reid. Save this link and read it after Stork's done. Worth your time: www.pointofdeparture.org...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it looks like we’ve lost Jimmy Heath. :(
  1:01pm
John from Florham park:

Jeff g who is jimmy heap?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01pm
Doug Schulkind:

Jimmy Heath carried the rather unfortunate nickname "Little Bird." What a sweet man he was.
Avatar 1:03pm
Wolfgang:

Oh no! My best friend's wife is a concert violinist and was photo'ed with Jimmy a few years back - hugs and grins - so sad!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm
Doug Schulkind:

@John from Florham park
Actually, there was a western swing and honky-tonk artist/bandleader named Jimmy Heap.
  1:03pm
Jeff g. via app:

@John: he was a saxophone player, came up in bebop, and had musician brothers. He was 93.
  1:05pm
John from Florham park:

@Jeff g just read about him on Wikipedia and sorry for messing his name up
@Doug wow thanks for the nugget of info
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:06pm
doctorjazz:

That is sad.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
Doug Schulkind:

Jimmy's brother, the drummer Albert Heath had a better nickname: Tootie (though sometimes spelled Toudie). He is also called Kuumba by those who love him.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:12pm
WR:

From the NPR link: "Moses is dead. The tablets are still here," Schaap declares. "Well, Jimmy Heath read the commandments of jazz, and he got the tablets from the great prophets. And he used it his way to great benefit, and he even fed it back towards the prophets. You know, Miles Davis used his stuff. Charlie Parker used his stuff. And John Coltrane was nurtured by Jimmy Heath." Well stated, Andrew should be celebrating a life well spent.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:15pm
WR:

LOL, don't know how Andrew got involved, damn auto text.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm
fred:

@WR: Maybe the "well spent" phrase triggered anticipation of the coming soaking of Mr Andrew Ross Breckman

Doug, you seem fixated on Miles Davis potty mouth. Two drummer updates in a row referencing Miles & MF.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm
Doug Schulkind:

@WR
Oh I am fixated on Miles alright, but I only recall one update referencing Miles' famous potty mouth.
Avatar 1:44pm
Wolfgang:

Thanks for the clarification, Dougie Babay
🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:45pm
WR:

Not an issue for me, but check your thanks to fleep on Friday. Then when saw your feature photo and comment today I wondered what might be the catalyst.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm
Doug Schulkind:

@WR
Ah today's email blast. The photo and comment accompanying today's mailing was produced by someone else on the stream. A different DJ sends out the mailing each day. I only do the Friday mailing. But it is safe to say that Give the Drummer Radio has Miles on the brain for sure.
🥁 Swag For Life Member 1:49pm
WR:

At least you know someone is reading, I often use it to get the link to the stream playlist.
  1:49pm
Ike:

Wait, whom am I irking now?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:52pm
Doug Schulkind:

@WR
Providing the links to each day's playlists is the service we aim to provide. So glad you're taking advantage of it!
Avatar 1:55pm

Ooo, ooo, can I add a filthy Miles utterance - it was to clarify for John Coltrane when should end his solo. SHould I? Or already been done?

Happy day for me: I got a handmade card from a friend who included her new phone number, and I called her. We were besties 30 years ago, but keeping in touch has been challenging at times (she has schizophrenia). I'm so happy to have talked to her today

That's really wonderful, Fred. I also had a good friend who's schizophrenic - finally lost touch with her - also about 30 years ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
