Sounds of Siberia: Mind-Blowing Jaw Harp and Overtone Singing Featuring Yuliyana Krivoshapkina and Nachyn Choreve + Lunar New Year China Spotlight
Listen to this show:
Pop-up player!
The duo Sounds of Siberia combines dazzling traditions of two neighboring regions: Yuliyana Krivoshapkina is a singer and master of the otherworldly-sounding khomus (jaw harp) of Yakutia. Nachyn Choreve is a multi-instrumentalist and master of Tuva's equally unearthly khoomei (overtone singing). Yuliyana honed her craft with stellar women's ensemble Ayarkhaan. Nachyn is a member of superb Tuvan-psychedelic band Hartyga. Sounds of Siberia is playing several shows and doing workshops in Oregon and Washington State this week and will be at SXSW in mid-March (date / venue TBA). Experience their magical sounds on WFMU tonight!
