February 1, 2020:
Zhou Family Band From Eastern China Live: Exuberance and Virtuosity
Listen to this show:
Pop-up player!
For generations, the Zhou Family, from Lingbi, Anhui Province, Eastern China, has played boisterous, exuberant - yet remarkably precise - horn-and-percussion music called Bolin Laba. It's music for weddings, funerals and everything in between.
Now they're bringing the music to international stages, from England's legendary WOMAD Festival to Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music - where in fact they'll perform on Wednesday night February 5th. (They're also playing a daytime Lunar New Year / Chinese cultural event at Webster University in the St. Louis area on Monday and a similar evening evening event at Middle Tennesee State University a week from tonight, Saturday February 8th.)
We're honored that the Zhou Family Band will make its US radio debut on WFMU!
Zhang Xin from Beijing Music Radio also joins us to translate and provide background.
