Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

new pair of shades....hmmm doctor

Dean:

Odd coincidence, doctorjazz. I have an eye exam today and I've already chosen my frames and yes, they're pricey.
  2:31pm
Dean:

The ones I wanted were handmade in Greece, but as they didn't have a price tag, I assumed that if I had to ask I couldn't afford them.

A sign of getting old, I guess...every time I go to replace something I've purchased before, I'm shocked at how much more expensive it is than the last time I bought it (and we're supposed to be living in low inflation times...there was worry at one point it's TOO low. Imagine...)

@doctorjazz: I hope that doesn't apply to records

Love this Chapin with Strings!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm

@Fred...have you looked at prices for new/reissued vinyl? $25-35 is inexpensive, some (hotsie-totsie audiophile vinyl) reissues are $100 and higher!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
fred:

$100? I'd never consider paying that for a live show!

The one thing that needs to be up there is the gig schedule. Bias showing there as I live in Europe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm
doctorjazz:

Being in the NY area, live music ain't cheap either (at least "name" artists...had thought of seeing Richard Thompson tonight at Symphony Space, $70 for good seats. ) Jazz clubs can cost $50 or more (just sticking to the minimum) for a 45 minute set.
  2:58pm
Dean:

The Theo Bleckmann show I caught a couple weeks ago was $50 for the cheap seats. But the show lasted an hour and a half.

Really? I might treat myself to a $50 show, once every 3 years or so, at most. I'd rather see people I don't know.

Deep Brooklyn is a schlep for this Jerseyite (though I did get to to Roulette on Atlantic Avenue this past week). Sorry I moved out of Brooklyn in many ways (though the burbs have their plusses).
  3:09pm

Last $50 show was, if ever, decades ago. Victoriaville doesn't count, since it's ~25 shows over five days.

Really like this Kell band!

I heard Hamza el Din live at McCabe's Guitar Shop on Santa Monica Blvd. many years ago. Spellbinding. I still think his best album might be the one he did for Kavi Alexander's Water Lily Acoustics. Certainly it's best in terms of recording quality.
  3:19pm
Dean:

Wow. According to this story, El Din found his oud at McCabe's in 1966!

It is, geezerette, and still promoting shows. I also heard Jonathan Richman and Steve Lacy with Roswell Rudd at the shop. Two separate shows, naturally. Alas, Valentino is no more.

My introduction to El Din was the Nonesuch LP Escalay, mid-'70s.
