Charles Mingus said jazz was a word invented to separate musicians from their money. Music for a Free World brings us together, drawing listeners to the healing power of smooth free jazz. Each week, surprise guests bring their own sides to spin and their instruments of choice to spontaneously jam.

@Andrew: Have you seen Hofesh Shechter's work? He's a drummer as well as a choreographer
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 3:14pm

Also, who are the choreographers you're working with, and are any planning to come to france? I'm a contemporary dance fan, but I'm lazy and only see 20 to 40 a year. Tickets can be hard to get here

Here's another sound collage w/ lots of samples that I did for choreography. This one is for Sheri Cohen's Love of the New Gun. Features jets, trains, trucks, crows, rain, etc. from when I was artist in residence with the Oneida Nation. The dance was produced in Seattle around 2001.

re: Shechter: Political Mother is great, and the choreographer cut version is probably the best (though I've still got to see the unplugged one). But I think my favorite work of his is The art of not looking back. Chilling.

Ed Blackwell passed away in 1992. I re-connected with his son in a big way in October 2019 when he loaned me his dad's Sonor drums for the Soup & Sound house concert on Oct 10--what would have been Ed Blackwell's 90th birthday. Pheeroan akLaff and I both played solo sets that night, using Blackwell's drums. It was a profound thing and a thrill.

Soup & Sound is the house concert series I've done at my place in Brooklyn for about 11 years. I make a big pot of soup for each one, and musicians play. Sometimes there are poets and writers, sometimes dancers, video/visual folk. etc... www.soupandsound.org
