A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Trouble and Modernaires!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:56am crateslinger:

@nholliewog - A big intersection full of cars and people and as far as they were concerned I just fell over for no reason. I hammed it up a little and tossed my legs in the air. Then got out of there as fast as I could. It wasn't so much the wind blowing me over as I was bracing against it and then it stopped and I plopped. I'm sure I made at least one person's day.

Hi Trouble. Thanks for the book recommendation of Wish Her Safe at Home. I feel like her most of the time, which I guess is what makes it so unsettling. I'm getting into the end now, and I can happily report that I'm not as bad as her, haha.

has anyone heard of this genre that the West is calling "Brazilian doomer music?" It's from the 60s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am Handy Haversack:

@crateslinger: I sure do! Every day, at least twice! From Greenpoint in the mornings and back in the evenings. Rain, shine, snow, ice, whatever. Sometimes I even bring binoculars to see what the birds are doing. We've had loons a few times this winter!

@Handy - I do the same route every day but in the bike lane. Next time the bridge is up, look for a bearded guy with glasses (as if that isn't everybody crossing the Pulaski).
But this guy will be scanning the pedestrians. That's me looking for you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am Handy Haversack:

@crateslinger -- will do. You should be able to recognize me. I'm a bearded guy with glasses.

evidently, "Brazilian doomer music" is essentially collections of '60s Brazilian music compiled by an internet subculture called "doomers." so nothing to see here, move along.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29am crateslinger:

so many bald eagles - the place is sick with them, and the loons swim right under your boat - they look like whales.

David (in London) is come! Let the rejoicings sound! Praise him with great praise.

Also, you might want to weave a circle round him thrice and close your eyes with holy dread, for he on honeydew hath fed, and drunk the milk of paradise!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Handy Haversack:

@βrian, that is *exactly* where we go. My mom's family's old farm property is there. Forty acres, wildflowers, wild Christmas trees, morels. Sandhill cranes breeding nearby.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am David (in London):

@Handy - Are you 'Grizzly' Haversack on the side?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Adrian in London:

Hey Trouble, I meant to say that having heard Lee Fields on your show, I've bought tickets to see him when he plays London as part of Grace Jones' curation of Meltdown. The GJ and Solange tickets were up to £150 (!) so getting a couple of Lee tickets for 35 quid each was a bargain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Handy Haversack:

@David, when the studios are finally brave enough to release _All About Handy_, the world will be shocked!

Hey - btw - are you up for another Memorial Day Motorcycle Ride? I got new bags and paint. Maybe we can get four bikes this year!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am Handy Haversack:

@crateslinger and KfHP: the current administration has granted a mineral lease to a Chilean mining company to put a copper mine right next to the Boundary Waters. Use DuckDuckGo or another responsible search engine to look up "Save the Boundary Waters" for more information. It's another thing that gets some money from me after WFMU.

@crateslinger, do you have a motorcycle in Greenpoint? Would I recognize it? (That is, is it the Triumph that's often on my block?)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am crateslinger:

that sucks about the copper mine - there were political anti mining signs in a lot of yards and on the side of the road when I was there - plus a few touting jobs.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am tim from champaign (now washington):

@Hubig - hmmmm, tough question. I say yes only because I've figured out how to play some of Hook's bass lines but I haven't been able to do that with Lemmy - hahaha.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42am crateslinger:

@handy - for real I will be looking for you

@KfHP - we'll talk. Planning stages. I'll send you an e-mail.

Take care @crateslinger, I'll keep an eye out!

My cousin said "No matter what you hippies do to recycle in San Francisco, us Los Angelians are ruining it all!"
Avatar 11:47am franny:

I'm all portable water bottles and using my own shopping bags but sometimes I forget. The inevitable lifestyle crisis disrupting intention.
Avatar 11:47am editor_b:

I'm hugely concerned, and yes I try to reduce my consumption of single-use plastic. But there is only so much we can do as "virtuous consumers." We need collective action. #BreakFreeFromPlastic it's a hashtag!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Buy bulk.
Avatar 11:47am Marshall Stacks:

We do a lot of the same things you do re plastic, Trouble.
Avatar 11:48am quinn:

dish soap - buy in a big bulk container and refill. There are two new bulk shops in Maplewood where you can bring your own containers and fill up on all sorts of stuff!
  11:48am Peter in SEA:

Do grocery stores collect and recycle plastic bags and film out there? Also at school there's a company Terracycle that will recycle everything!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am crateslinger:

I see you on my thing Mariano - I'll get back later.

Greenzo OUT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Passaic River Blues:

@Quinn: that's an excellent suggestion! Will have to look into that joint.
  11:49am Chi Bill:

I re-use my Dasani disposable water bottle over a year now, probably should replace. There's not enough we can do at this point. Trump is about to trash a refuge along the Wall started in the 70's. We can't afford steps back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Greg from ZONE 5:

My sushi place in JC has learned to just hand me my food with no bag, chopsticks, soy sauce, napkins or menu. Usually people are cool because it's actually saving *them* time and money.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Maybe the wall could be made of plastic water bottles?
Avatar 11:50am βrian:

Damn, I miss the sushi cart.

Yogurt makin' plastic hatin' folks here too! Weiter so DJ Trouble
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am melinda:

@editor b agree, there has been an overemphasis on individual consumer action as opposed to collective citizen action.
Avatar 11:50am Malcolm:

luckily a zero-waste shop has opened near my house in manchester UK. I take glass jars to refill with foodstuffs, and you can refill shampoo bottles! we also need to lobby the government to ban single use plastics, regulate manufacturers and fund research into alternatives!
Avatar 11:51am quinn:

@Passaic --
  11:51am tripod:

You can get bulk dishwashing liquid, bring your own container to fill. (Though there's still the issue of the large plastic jugs the bulk comes in). I'm sure there's somewhere in your area that carries bulk. There are also dishwashing bars (Like shampoo bars) that you rub your sponge on and go for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Gwendolz:

Shampoo bars are great! Reusable cotton or nylon produce bags I've also been using for years. Still much to work on. I've tried making my own protein bars but I do not have the time for that! myplasticfreelife.com is a good resource.
  11:52am annya:

@chi bill plastics especially the kinds in trashable bottles will leak into your water :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am melinda:

Thanks for the tunes, Trouble! I'm not coming to marathon this year unfortunately but I'll be listening and cheering on from home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54am Handy Haversack:

Thanks for a wonderful show today, Trouble! Sounded so good, set after set. And still does!
  11:54am annya:

I try to cut down on my consumption overall and make my own things (DIY projects) to avoid packaging.
  11:55am ecbreezy:

industry has told us for decades that it’s the personal responsibility of consumers to recycle/reduce/reuse, to shirk responsibility onto us....to sell us more stuff...and it’s got to the point where you have no choice but to buy everything in some sort of plastic. it’s beyond time for government and municipalities to step in and regulate the production of plastics.

going to a coop or place to refill would be ideal but the vast majority of people do not have access to those types of stores :/
Avatar 11:55am βrian:

I'll be cooking food for the marathon — and eating it.

I think writing to companies (and posting things...posts...with tags to them, some big companies have unusually attentive and sharp social-media ppl who might even be able to get the word to the old white men at the top, that us peasants have had it with their plasticdeath
