Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from March 20, 2020 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

I had a nice catch-up phone visit with my sister-in-law just now and have avoided checking the Maine CDC website so far, so I think today is going better than yesterday. Learned that sister-in-law found a half-sister through an ancestry site after years of trying to track down birth parents, which I think is really cool.

Different versions are cited of what the initial screen test notes said. Fred himself reported much later it was:"Can't act. Slightly bald. Also dances."
Selznick said this: "I am uncertain about the man, but I feel, in spite of his enormous ears and bad chin line, that his charm is so tremendous that it comes through even on this wretched test."

My favorite Fred number is in "Swing Time," when Fred pulls Ginger into a routine to demonstrate to the grumpy dance studio boss what Ginger has "taught" him. It's simple and joyful to watch, without the gimmicks and elaborate staging concepts of his other musicals, especially later ones.
