hi, Olivia and folks. that 3 chord was just as good the second time around. happy to hear a live ravioli, though! how's everyone doing with the new 'don't touch face' reality? its hard for me to get used to.

@Carmichael howdy
@coel howdy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:13pm mariano:

@listener james: Someone's familiar with Justin Wilson! @fred: Yes, NOLA under lockdown is a strange sight indeed, especially this time of year. Still, the city's been through hurricanes, fires, bouts of yellow fever and cholera, so I have every faith in its resilience. France is on pretty tight lockdown too from what I read, hope you're keeping safe.
  3:14pm seth from muddy creek:

Working from my basement office. Walls vibrating from blasting this track. Killer. Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:16pm chresti:

Hi chris, not used to it either, waiting in line yesterday, noticed lack of 6ft distance compliance.
  3:17pm SeanG:

PLEDGE!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:17pm mariano:

Sorry, my comment reads more glib to me than I meant for it to be, not dismissing the current crisis, just trying to say don't count us out just yet :)
  3:17pm SeanG:

NOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm coelacanth∅:

hi chresti!

i bought chocolate today. i phoned it it but i'm pretty sure he had to put them in the box then handed the box to me in the doorway. it's almost like touching each-other.
i'm doomed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:18pm Crudbringer:

Playing with legos and listening to dad's Justin Wilson records... good times.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:19pm chris:

Yeah, especially since *the* virus lives on cardboard, paper, every goddam thing @coel.

chris, it was the same in LA, prompting the mayor to shut things down.

Hi, John. How are you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm Handy Haversack:

Sounds like a plan, Olivia!
Avatar 3:23pm fred:

@Ken: might the "incentive" on the front page be keeping people from pushing the station over the finish line?
  3:23pm P-90:

Hi Olivia!
Avatar 3:23pm Andy M.:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:23pm bore:

i put the checks in the can and sent it up. then i noticed the forms right next to the can garage. was about to grab one and tell her i'll send it up when she said how do you want that? -so i got it all cashed. i'll redeposit it next week when i need to pay the rent.
i didn't even think to wash my hands after that, chresti.
...i'm doomed.

I love La Lupe!
Avatar 3:28pm ledzeppelinsucks:

Domestic violence is peaking. That lie that Superbowl Sunday is the biggest day for domestic violence has been battered by every shelter day. And every day at the grocery store is Black Friday. This shelter bullshit is like a month long Thanksgiving Dinner.

meh.. I'll take my changes on getting beer. Lots of other things in the liquor cabinet
  3:29pm Barbie:

Glad to hear you live

"i'm sorry baby i didn't mean to beat you to a pulp it's this goddamn lock-down's fault"
Avatar 3:31pm fred:

Total and utter Gunness shortage over here. This is really getting serious. Who drinks TP anyway?
Avatar 3:31pm ledzeppelinsucks:

It's a challenge to social distance and battle shop. Throwing the gallon water jugs at other shoppers is a work around.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Handy Haversack:

That's not good, @fred!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:33pm listener 126464:

Founders All Day IPA delivery wasn't made lat week. This is getting serious.
  3:33pm P-90:

Did Olivia say she was broadcasting in a robe today?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Bluh ... getting sleepy for nap time. I just kind of dreamed up a new stack food. Cheesy poofs in the shape of nuts & bolts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm chris:

hope its a ravioli print robe
  3:34pm JakeGould:

Everyone on the skeleton crew can do whatever they are doing dressed whatever way they want.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:34pm olivia:

I don't think I said that , P-90, did I?
Avatar 3:35pm ledzeppelinsucks:

Inmates are getting released early. They can't quench their vice cravings. No congregating means no common drug dealers at places like 6th and Market in San Francisco of 3rd and Pine in Seattle. No targets to mug or burglarize. No hookers, homies, fencing or hussles. The low budget criminals and junkies have got to be going nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm olivia:

if i had a raviioli print robe, it would definitely be the only thing in my wardrobe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:35pm steveo:

seems like something you would remember saying
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36pm Kat in Chicago:

Working from home means I can remedy my radio ravioli deficiency, empty pasta shelves notwithstanding. Thank you for bringing us a show, Olivia!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm coelacanth∅:

i've got some stout and some ale and some liquor and some wine but i'm not drinking much. i need to keep my immune system strong, especially since the un-patriotic piece of shit that is the american government doesn't work for the people; so my insurance has lapsed indefinitely for an income discrepancy.
Avatar 3:37pm fred:

See the solidarity around here? I missed an "i" in Guinness, and Olivia made up for it

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:37pm spodiodi:

aloha all, and thank you, olivia!
i might have smoked some tp in a pinch, never tried drinking it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:38pm Jim the Poet:

Avatar 3:40pm fred:

Pasta situation is pretty crazy here: nothing in my (mostly poor) neighborhood, but when I take small side street to avoid the patrols and get to richer places, there's no shortage there
Avatar 3:40pm ledzeppelinsucks:

The DUI industry has been sent feet first through a mulcher. There were zero DUI arrests in many shelter areas and close to nil in the others on St Patricks day, the DUI industry's Black Friday. When the DUI industry asks for a bailout tell them to shove it. Make those idiots go bankrupt.
Avatar 3:41pm Franco Twinkie:

Fred, where are you?
  3:41pm JakeGould:

@Olivia: You said something like “Here I am doing my show in my [something]…” and it honestly sounded like “robe” so hey. Maybe “abode?”

  3:43pm testingwithfire:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Jeezy:

Fully stocked with liquor and pasta over here in Brooklyn... and of course "airport rules" for drinking are in effect, meaning it can begin any time day or night. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:43pm Bootsie:

@ledzeppelinsucks I have NO problem with the "DUI Industry," as you call it. It helps keep people safe. And FTR, I was once arrested on a DUI. I had NO business being behind the wheel that night.

Avatar 3:45pm fred:

@Franco: Maybe, maybe not. Most of these reports are BS, so I can't tell by just living there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:47pm mariano:

@fred: I always liked the response of the French ambassador to the US when asked about supposed "Sharia no-go zones" in Paris -- "The question is so ridiculous I am embarrassed to feel obliged to respond!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:48pm Mr. Pumpy:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Mr. Pumpy:

I want to put that song on my French Dip...tout de suite!

In general what scares me is people living in marge (as in higher than two stories) buildings who might be staying at home but might infect each other.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:49pm Handy Haversack:

That *was* pretty bonkers!

Hey, Mr. Pumpy, queems!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Jim the Poet:

Thanks for holding down the fort
Avatar 3:52pm Andy M.:

Thank you for doing what you're doing, Olivia.
Avatar 3:52pm Jeff Moore:

To echo @JakeGould: you can definitely always pay more than asked. (Has anyone researched the fee structure of Bandcamp – does anything extra you toss in above the sticker price go to artists without anything skimmed off?)

Bandcamp published numbers for last Friday, quote:

The numbers tell a remarkable story: on a typical Friday, fans buy about 47,000 items on Bandcamp, but this past Friday, fans bought nearly 800,000, or $4.3 million worth of music and merch. That’s more than 15 times our normal Friday, and at the peak, fans were buying 11 items per second.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake, if you have Netflix, watch the episode, "The Next Pandemic" on the series, Explained. The sewage and ventilation systems get crossed in a high-rise apartment complex in Asia during, I think the swine flu outbreak...could have been SARS. Anyhow...maybe don't watch it! Very informative, though...and it came out in the fall of 2019. www.youtube.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm coelacanth∅:

Polyus the system's wonky. every year since at least 2014 i renew my s4L pledge yet every year my radio disappears, until and unless i call Joe to request it's return.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm Mr. Pumpy:

Handy, queems...how do?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm spodiodi:

  3:54pm βrian:

If you love your radio, set it free ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:54pm Handy Haversack:

Pretty cool, @Jeff Moore!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm coelacanth∅:

Jeff, no. bandcamp takes 10-15% of all sales.
- still heroes of the industry.
  3:56pm JakeGould:

@MrPumpy: Errr… Thanks, but I won’t watch that because I know the concept and honestly I don’t find stuff like that compelling; I consider that kind of panic TV. Don’t need that.

Also, NYC buses are crazy now. No fare, enter through the back and then pack in the back and I assure you there is no social distancing.
Avatar 3:56pm MacDonald:

It's snowing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake...I think that is the wrong link. I am not interested in misinformation! Ack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:56pm queems:

howdy @mr. pumpy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake...got ya. The series in general is pretty cool. There's 30-40 episodes about various topics. For instance...one is about animal intelligence.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:57pm Handy Haversack:

Episode 15 was fantastic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm Handy Haversack:

(Of The Secret Harmony, that is!)
Avatar 3:58pm fred:

@mariano: there are things close to "sharia no-go zones" though. Not in Paris, but in the suburbs. Funded by Saudi Arabia, and given immunity because of arms sales. I give them a wide berth
Avatar 3:58pm MacDonald:

Ep. 15 was Top of the Charts!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm coelacanth∅:

been snowing here all day, but it's barely sticking.
anyway it might as well be.
  3:59pm JakeGould:

@Mr.Pumpy: I didn’t even click the link. The thing is — and this Coronavirus stuff emphasizes it — but I don’t want to spend linear time I can’t get back watching or listening to media. Waste of time. The concept of cramped quarters and disease should not be difficult for most to understand.

Anyway, I just had ravioli for lunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Handy...HA! I looked at what the 15th episode of Explained is. K-Pop!!! And then I saw your follow up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:00pm Handy Haversack:

I mean, I have nothing against K-Pop! I was just expressing more immediate appreciation.
  4:01pm βrian:

Tonight we're going to lock ourselves in the basement, turn up the heat, and watch Das Boot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Kat in Chicago:

'twas a winter wonderland here yesterday, like a snow globe, but it's melted and the sun just came out. Haven't gone farther than the dumpster since Thursday, but I might just log off my work and take a dang walk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:01pm Handy Haversack:

Is Jacob Marley in My Cat Is an Alien?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Handy Haversack:

Yeah, Kat, seems reasonable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm Mr. Pumpy:

@Jake...got ya. I'm not saying you should or should not do anything. Just giving you options by which to exercise your free will. My point was, all episodes are different, it's not a show about disease. I simply present that fact in the interest of clarity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:02pm queems:

@kat definitely take a walk! it will change your day for the better
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:03pm Mr. Pumpy:

@βrian...been there. It's a long way to Tipperary!!! Enjoy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm Mr. Pumpy:

@queems, took a good walk each of the past two days. It has changed everything.

Take a walk while you can't. It might not last (especially if you live in a poor neighborhood and right wing politicians start calling for the army to cordon you off)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:06pm queems:

@mr. pumpy me too! i did 11 miles yesterday because i knew i wouldn't get out today due to the rain. most people stayed away from me, but i'm surprised how many people still think it's a good idea to spit on the ground where people are walking. that's disgusting on a good day and a real dick move under the current circumstances

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:08pm Mr. Pumpy:

  4:13pm Listener Robert:

I never understood why people spat instead of swallowing. Then again, being asthmatic, I could hardly ever blow sputum hard enough to reach the front of the mouth to spit, so I was always swallowing it and viewed that as the most natural thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm spodiodi:

some people think swallowing it is unhealthy
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm WoodsOfNH:

I always see people spitting on the ground just before entering a store. So gross. Makes me "urpy"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Mr. Pumpy:

@queems, I always shed some substantial weight post Xmas, but circumstances are such that my dad got quite ill in December and I've been on duty since. So, while I'm here holed up with pops, I have to begin to get out there and make it happen. I have to be my best for him as well! I was going to go home and grab my bike today, but I'll strap it to the roof tomorrow...then I'll be rolling. Lit-rally.

People need to stop spitting. Finally, maybe they'll stop because of this. Save it for the sink and the dentist.

"Brian seems to be popular with athletes as well," said Brian's friend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
Avatar 4:19pm Jeff Moore:

I've mentioned this to some people before, but I was kind of tortured by "You Only Live Twice" playing in my head for a year or so.

There's a reason.

A quirk of my brain is that if I hear the words of a song lyric I know, my mind subconsciously latches onto that, and loads the whole song, melody and all, to play in my head.

It doesn't have to be a whole song lyric. It can be a couple of words.

Or an implied couple of words.

It doesn't take much for the demented Markov-chain machinery in my head to latch onto something it can work with.

So... remember when the darned kids thought it was funny to yell "YOLO!"?

Sometime after that, somebody scratched YOLO into the WFMU kitchen table.

And every time I caught a glimpse of that out of the corner of my eye, my subconscious expanded the letters into their full words, latched onto "You Only", and started playing "You Only Live Twice" in my head.

Like, every time.

I'd be doing something in the kitchen like brewing coffee, and I'd realize I was humming or just hearing that song.

This happened a lot for quite awhile, probably until the table was refinished.

lot of capacity for technical nerdery. I see it's linked in that
article, too.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm ParUbi:

What's the story with Zoom? Chiefly privacy concerns?
  4:39pm JakeGould:

When people talk about songs to sing while washing your hands for 20 seconds, the song that comes up in my head is consistently is the Bill Davis Trio’sd “Catch ’Em Young, Treat ’Em Rough, Tell ’Em Nothin’”

The chorus is basically something like, “Catch em young, treat em rough and never tell them nothing never tell them nothing… Catch em young, treat em rough and never tell them nothing never tell them nothing… That’s how you get results!”

Catchy tune. Creepy message. Wash your hands!
Avatar 4:39pm Jeff Moore:

The kkkops that are always BSing about crime prevention will be begging for bailouts. They are in the business to arrest people and seize their property of have the courts do it by slimy fines and probation. Screw the DUI industry. Autonomous vehicles are going to obliterate DUI and probable cause anyway. Thanks so much, Olivia, and thanks to the Skeleton Crew. You're providing a necessary and invaluable public service keeping us sane in these crazy times.

I’ve had a migraine and been half napping on my studio floor with the radio on the last hour, its been great hearing the music mixed with the pattering of the rain. Think it made me feel a lil better!
