A three-hour exploration of excavations from the farthest reaches of humanity's hellish collective brain, through records, tapes, CDs, mostly scoured from country bumpkin thrift stores, creepy charity shops, backwoods junk stores, and even the internet - all mixed live. We don't judge, we just play 'em. Hosted by Rich in Washington.

I use to love this back in the day. And I was a young teenager with zero interest in showtunes. How the good Capt made vintage Broadway sound New Wave is fairly miraculous.

Really the only thing I knew about the Kipper Kids before now is that the one with the German name is wed to Bette Midler. It's fun to actually hear them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm
Rich in Washington:

Hi Kat!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm
Rich in Washington:

Brian Routh was once married to Karen Finley. I could only imagine what couples night out was like for them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Kat in Chicago:

Hi Rich! Just tuned in. Yeah I just saw that on Wikipedia and that's... hard to imagine. I actually met Karen Finley during that period, she did a show at the club I was working for. I don't remember hubby being around but he could have been.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm
Rich in Washington:

What happened to Karen Finley? Does she still perform?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
Kat in Chicago:

I think so? But i expect she's toned it down.
  8:13pm
ARB:

I saw Karen Finley perform at Powells when i worked there, but that was in y2k
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
Rich in Washington:

I don't think they were married long. I do know Brian spent the last years of his life married to a visual artist, uni professor named Patricia.
  8:14pm
ARB:

And thanks for playing this, I've always wanted to hear more Kipper Kids bc of their cameo in The Forbidden Zone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:14pm
Rich in Washington:

ARB, you worked at Powell's? You were a Portlander? WHa?
  8:15pm
Martinibomb:

I as you know am a massive fan of kipper kids
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm
Kat in Chicago:

I have found in revisiting Karen Finley's work that it doesn't appeal much to me any more, althoughI still have some degree of respect for it. I wouldn't play her music at this point.
  8:16pm
ARB:

I lived there from the tail end of 99 until Jan 2002 and worked at Powells while they were unionizing
  8:16pm
Martinibomb:

ARB worked at Powells?! hah When was that?? My roomate in the late 90s worked there..
  8:16pm
ARB:

And haven't held a respectable job since
  8:16pm
Martinibomb:

^Good for you! Me neither
  8:19pm
ARB:

Who was the roommate?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm

Joe McGasko did a DJ premium of steel drum music this year, I wonder if he has anything from "Pan Machine" on it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm

Not sure. I was surprised to have only recently heard of this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm
