At the outset, let me say that I am not persuaded by this argument, which I think is ahistorical. But basically, this guy suggested that notated music had evolved from modes, to diatonicism, and then to serialism; and that "African American jazz" had evolved from blues, to harmony, to "free"

	11:06am fred: Use of electronics (even worse, software) in contemporary music has muddied those waters quite a bit: there is basically no notation, so that playing some pieces relies on memories of people who were there (and are dying off)

At the outset, let me say that I am not persuaded by this argument, which I think is ahistorical. But basically, this guy suggested that notated music had evolved from modes, to diatonicism, and then to serialism; and that "African American jazz" had evolved from blues, to harmony, to "free"

	11:06am fred: Use of electronics (even worse, software) in contemporary music has muddied those waters quite a bit: there is basically no notation, so that playing some pieces relies on memories of people who were there (and are dying off)
