Sun. Dec 22nd, 3pm - 5pm:
The Unsolicited Return of the Winter Soul-stice (fill-in for Paul Bruno)
(More info...)
You can't stop the seasons from turning, and you evidently also can't stop an old dog from performing his one old trick. Answering the teeming clamor of one New York Times food columnist
, Gaylord Fields is returning to WFMU's airwaves for a one-off Winter Soul-stice program. In his time away he's learned nothing, so the format will remain the same: two hours of original 1960s soul 45s, and the abuse of an expensive reverb machine for the sake of corny vocal effects.
If anyone cares, I just finished re-watching “The Omega Man” for the first time since I was a kid… It’s not a very good movie… Even by Charlton Heston standards.
Hello, radio friends! Please forgive me for not saying hello to everyone individually. Even though I'm not programming this Guaranteed 100% All New Program live (prerecorded yesterday), there are a lot of you folks on this here thing nowadays.
So, what's everyone doing while listening to Gaylord's show?
I'll start: I'm doing some mending. I got a few garments that need sewing that can't really be done on a machine.
Whaddabout you?
Hi, JakeGould, Phillippe Bastille, WFMU's own Mark Hurst, Marley P. Dogg (I like the middle initial), Corey, chresti, spodiodi, Andres, listener 126464, Handy Haversack, Therese!!!, Yes, James in ATL, Ken From Hyde park, mariano, Wendy del Formaggio <3, slugluv1313, Joe B (The People's Champ), Bill W, and Tim 07030. Whew!
It’s one of those 1970s you know some studio exec just said, “Yeah… Whatever… A**ses in seats… We need a new release…”
@BillW: Ingredients are one thing. How they are used is another. The film might have been better if it had slightly bigger budget. Or maybe just have the whole film be Charlton Heston driving around desolate L.A. and randomly shooting things. No plot past that.
Hi, doctorjazz, sugarwolf <3, khd, and especially Uncle Michael, without whom...
8:18pm
cheri the duff:
Hey,, GOOD evening @Mr Fields and all wonderful commenters.. @Mr Fields could it be possible that you do another show with tunes from 1970 -1975?? THANKS VERY MUCH....
@ JakeGould -- ah! before my local library totally shut down for the duration, i had taken out a buncha DVDs -- so not only am i actually finding the time to watch them, but i am also finding them somehow strangely appropriate -- 1973's "Westworld," the first season of "The Handmaid's Tale," final season of "Game of Thrones" . . .
@spodiodi...up to episode 5 on Ozark S3...pretty good. I am going to watch a few tonight since I'm home and have full TV autonomy. Pretty good show. I like the visual style, and a grip of the writing is good.
@Wendy...catching up on the accu. I'm currently finishing some grading and lesson planning for virtual school, talking to my friend on the phone, and sipping bourbon and soda.
@miniteeny: Thanks! They belonged to other people, but then I commandeered them, threw them in a bag, shook that bag vigorously, and then released the result to you kind lovelies.
Three large cukes, peeled, cut up, blended and strained. 1/2 cup fresh lime juice, 1/2 cup agave nectar, water to make two quarts, stir and serve on the rocks. Dilute a little in the glass if you prefer it weaker.
Wendy, since you asked, I was finishing eating dinner at that time, then returned to my computer. Hit a little lull this weekend in the work for Divina Biotech, must TALK to the client about how to proceed, meanwhile wrote a short piece this morning for Dr. Rima Truth Reports, and am working on an idea for Newton Braves youth football.
@radioronan: thanks for that link! My station up here in Brattleboro wvew.org is doing the same thing as WOMR, and so far it's working out okay. Mostly we're relying on the automated system until more hosts get their archives submitted, or set up their home studios.
8:51pm
Mary Marge:
Gaylord, hi! So happy to be listening along with all of you
@Wendy: We will have our on-air cheese party! Thanks for reintroducing the idea, which will happen once we can be in the same room together again. And there will be doughnuts.
@Gaylord: One of the things that's helped me maintain (some semblance of) mental health lately is making lists of all of the fabulous things I will do once we're on the other side of COVID-19. Things like hugging friends, going out to the diner, seeing bands... And having an on-air cheese-and-doughnut party with YOU! <3
@Mr. Pumpy: I have no idea where Bridgewater Corners is.
@radioronan: Radio is crucial during good and bad times. And, please allow me to correct you: you are eating just enough cheese these days. :-)
Ever grill a whole chicken? Tried it for the 1st time, spice rub inside and outside for a change of pace. It was really good! My white meat hating family pretty much stripped it clean (not much left for the pooches).
9:15pm
allanToronto:
Hi Gaylord. Thanks for supporting the cause :). I am happy to be sitting here in the dark with your lovely show, having just downed 2 bowls of Campbell's Tomato Soup, my go-to comfort soup...just for the Warhol of it.
@doctorjazz, I have roasted a whole chicken on a gas barbecue with indirect heat, and while it was very good, I didn't think it was so much better than the electric oven.
@Gaylord, it's like I say for every WFMU fundraiser, that it's the best cause of all: our own amusement.
@ katie -- yes! King FEBO, so stately and regal :)
these guys are fine -- but, as i think with everyone who is now home most of the time, EXTRA excited whenever i walk towards the kitchen, hah! "oh cool, 24/7 human service!"
At the end of Space Oddity, Petra did this one *thing* which I was sure I got.
9:29pm
Tamar:
Gaylord! This is an excellent show. What a pro to be such a technical novice and have it sound as beautifully and creatively flowy as you do with under normal circumstances. Kudos to Uncle Michael and Scott for their assistance, and hello everyone.
When I worked at Midnight, we got a Michel Polnareff CD in stock and constantly played it. One night I had a dream that I produced a concert with Polnareff at a venue that looked a lot like Fez. it was a very successful event and i woke up happy:)
9:35pm
Sally:
Hi all! Great show Gaylord, thank you for pre-recording and being here. I just finished talking with a friend on the phone, after writing in my journal. Now making canned veggie soup w/beans, zucchini, fennel...grateful for WFMU.
Every time I hear Baden Powell, I think, "I should listen to more Baden Powell."
@Gaylord, don't I say something like that each week during your show? I hope you're not getting tired of that. :-)
Love this Baden Powell...Canned soup ingredients aren't so bad: tomato puree, white beans, carrots, red peppers, zucchini, onions, cabbage, celery, fennel, parsley
9:45pm
ignatatus666:
@Wendy del
I’m at work. It’s horribly slow and the streets are 96% abandoned.
@Gaylord, most of that dream was technical, set-up behind the scenes stuff. I remember Polnareff sitting on a stool onstage doing sound check. I definitely would have put you and the missus on the guest list if I had any say in the matter:) BTW great music on your show tonight. Truly soothing my non-essential blues:)
9:47pm
highway:
Gaylord..your intuition...telepathy...synchronicity is always brilliant...it's Terry Jack's birthday one of my favorite song writers...also birthdays to Astrud Gilberto...and my friend Eric Idle...I was in the UK SBS...similar to the Navy Seals...I could never have prepared for this challenge...I read the Art of War everyday...I did before and I continue..I love you...take care...
Play vertigo with Mayuko if you never listened like myself ,is on the drummer stream. I listened earlier in the March 28 archives. That program is excellent. Japanese hard rock and a little mainstream.
no cake here; but i bought my sister a pound of chocolates (because her best friend died) right before i decided to not go down there for a while
so i eat chocolates. i try to limit myself to 1/day, but i just ate my 2nd.
Hey there Gaylord, Thanks for Baden Powell.. and Nick Drake.. the sweetest sounds I have heard all day.. Where was that unorchestrated River Man sourced from?
