WH Henry, recently looked for some census numbers and I looked at wikipedia pages. For 2010 and 2000 at least they detail the ethnicity questions. Interesting to see the changes. It is a complex matter that can have some use but also liable for manipulation for political and economic reasons. I am mixed in response to their approach and in my answers as well.

Random music comment. Being a New Orleans refugee, I always pay attention when someone covers a NOLA tune. The Lords in 1967 were doing Rockin' Pneumonia with was first released in 1957. A 10 year gap. 1970 (for simple math purposes) was 50 years ago. Also very interesting to reflect on the pop rock changes in the 5 years from 1967 to 1972. I wonder if they seem so great just because I was active consumer during that time. Does a 20 year old now hear similar major change from 67 to 72.

When I was a kid in Japan, out cross-the-street neighbors invited us for dinner (this was 1987). They had a toilet w/ a seat that could be warmed, blow hot or cold air up your bum, and a bidet. My bros. and I were fascinated by it. So, my brother goes in there, accidentally sets off the bidet, and couldn't turn it off. He got me, and asked me to turn it off. I had been in the country for almost a year, so my hiragana was crap, so I couldn't figure it out (I was 11). So, the bathroom got flooded w/ 5 cm of water before we came out of the bathroom and begged our hosts to turn it off. Doing the census online was reasonably painless. Much easier than I remember with the forms. Now more paper for the recycle bin. The "race" questions allow for multi-ethnic identifying people. They do use the questionable term "race" instead of ethnic origin, but whatever.
