Evening, Gary! Evening, Bodega pals!

Hey there, Lambda-C!
Avatar 6:59pm LambdaCalculus:

Did you get your computer fixed?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:59pm Gary:

Nope! Using work computer temporarily until I get a new one
  7:00pm Michael C:

Evening, folks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm melinda:

Hi Gary and gang
Avatar 7:01pm TDK60:

Good evening Gary and all. Golly, that show title rings a bell somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Gary:

Michael! Melinda!
Avatar 7:01pm LambdaCalculus:

I reckoned the issue was a fan going out, and if it's a Mac, especially an older one, those are easy to swap out and put a replacement one in. What sucks is because I can't get into the city, I can't do that kind of repair work right now!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Gary:

TDK! How's everyone holding up?
Avatar 7:02pm LambdaCalculus:

I do computer hardware repairs as a side gig.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Doug Schulkind:

I love you, Bodega Pop Live!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:02pm Gary:

Doug! We all love you!
Avatar 7:03pm TDK60:

It's been okay mainly but with some mental oddness now and then in this situation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm chresti:

Hello Bodega lovers! Hi Gary!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm chresti:

I am waiting for my mental oddness herb to kick in. Thanks TDK60, you take care, too.
Avatar 7:11pm TDK60:

Hi Chresti. Well, there's the WFMU kinda oddness and mental states of oddness less fun.
Avatar 7:12pm LambdaCalculus:

Being at home hasn't been so bad. I've been gardening and learning to cook more!
Avatar 7:13pm LambdaCalculus:

Today I made some really good Chinese beef with broccoli!
Avatar 7:15pm TDK60:

One aspect has been irritation with certain people outside who are not taking this seriously. Most do seem to be tho.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:16pm Gary:

Now that I don't have a 4-hour-a-day commute, I feel normal again, ironically, given the situation. I've been cooking more, reading more, limiting TV updates
Avatar 7:19pm TDK60:

I'm not bored whatsoever. Books, magazines, LPs, tapes, WFMU, guitar, oh yeah--internet; it's just the "stir crazy" thing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:20pm Gary:

The stir crazy is real. Lots of pacing and pseudo-dancing to no music
Avatar 7:20pm LambdaCalculus:

I've got books, tons of music, internet, my Super Famicom, my old computers, and plenty of movies, WFMU, and cookbooks and gardening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm melinda:

Today was the first day I started to feel like I was catching up on home stuff, like organizing things in my kitchen. I still have a ton of stuff to unpack and clean since moving back into my house post-mold.
  7:22pm Jill B:

Hi Gary,

So happy your music continues for all of us to enjoy. Stay well my dear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:22pm WR:

I've been working from home for about 2 years. So personally the only personal difference now is that I go to the grocery store at 7AM or 11PM to avoid crowd. It took 1.5 week but I finally scored toilet paper this morning so all set to continue shelter in place except for periodic milk and egg replenishment. Oh, one difference, my partner is now working from home. It's been a week now. So far so good with us being in the apartment all the time together. With the real possibility of this going on for several months I assume we will have new opportunities for growth in the relationship...
Avatar 7:23pm TDK60:

Glad your show continues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm melinda:

@Gary I'm sorry to hear about the stir-crazies but 'pseudo-dancing to no music' is hilarious. I sometimes do that when it's too cold to go outside.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:23pm Gary:

Hi Mom! All is well, you too, and stay safe! ... and, hi WR!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm melinda:

Our shelter in place went into effect today at 5:00, but they called it Emergency Stay at Home or something like that.
Avatar 7:26pm LambdaCalculus:

Everyone forgets too that the bodegas and small mom and pop food stores in NYC usually have the much needed supplies, including toilet paper.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Gary:

We will all find out if we're living with the right person, haha
Avatar 7:29pm TDK60:

Yes, the small groceries, delis, bodegas are open. Often more well stocked than the big supermarkets. I thanked my bakery-deli workers the other day when I got croissants. In Spanish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:35pm chresti:

The worrisome part for me is that people can be out and around unawares they have it, and not taking precautions. The irritating part is the hoarding and shortages.
Avatar 7:37pm TDK60:

Rest assured I have been /extremely/ angry about the situation in its political dimension. I will not bring up specifics at this time.
Avatar 7:37pm LambdaCalculus:

The hoarding is the worst. Especially when it comes to food. Unless you're cooking for an army, I don't see any real reason why anyone would need to buy 144 eggs or 20 gallons of milk!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm melinda:

@chresti yeah. Normally I find walking in my neighborhood a decent antidote to stress but lately I find myself getting anxious when I pass someone and we don't have 6 feet between us.
Avatar 7:39pm LambdaCalculus:

My local Portuguese supermarket thankfully has had plenty of good food available. Plenty of good, fresh fruits and veggies, plenty of good, freshly baked bread, lots of fresh meat, and lots of other tasty delectables.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:40pm melinda:

Even if people only shop for a few weeks supplies, when a lot of people do that it depletes reserves.
Avatar 7:41pm coelacanth∅:

good evening Gary and Bodeghisattvas
Avatar 7:42pm Franco Twinkie:

Melinda, I just had my first corona related melt down. I have some video related material I need to collect in person and the transaction just became complicated.
Avatar 7:43pm coelacanth∅:

ha, good timing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm chresti:

Not bored, although this is the first day I miss work. As long as there´s music, art supplies, plenty of household tasks to get caught up on. At least the stores are starting to restrict quantities, also they let me in early ´cuz I´m old. Still out of things, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm ParUbi:

Hello Gary, hey all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm Gary:

Franco! Ceolacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:47pm Gary:

Avatar 7:47pm coelacanth∅:

i'm never bored. lots to do; lots to think about.
tonight i'm logging and filing cds, records and tapes, which i haven't done in 2-3 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:48pm ParUbi:

Not really bored either-- teaching from home
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm chresti:

Yeah TDK60, the political aspect of this thing is infuriating, to put it mildly.

Hi coel, melinda, ParUbi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Gary:

How is the teaching from home going? I imagine it depends a lot on class size, age, etc
Avatar 7:50pm TDK60:

..yeh chresti, "mildly," ha!
Avatar 7:50pm coelacanth∅:

interesting drum part - like that of "i don't live today" (Hendrix)
Avatar 7:51pm coelacanth∅:

(the last song)

hi chresti
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm ParUbi:

It's mostly grading now, but I also record lectures, re-read the material, and prepare notes. It's hard to stay on schedule with this COVID 19 distraction.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm ParUbi:

It's nice to have WFMU in the background for a *good* distraction
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm melinda:

@Franco that sucks
Avatar 7:53pm TDK60:

..there's great stuff happening too -- mutual aid groups helping...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm ParUbi:

That's really inspiring, @TDK60. Feels like a step toward a better world.
Avatar 7:54pm LambdaCalculus:

I like this album!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm Gary:

Just one remaining CD left! Link in next song
Avatar 7:55pm coelacanth∅:

yeah exchange of any material substance is complicated now. i have craigslist items on hold.
... maybe i'll just leave this stuff somewhere.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:55pm ParUbi:

It's really good. 1980s Japanese underground, huh? Missed your intro
Avatar 7:55pm Franco Twinkie:

My observation about grocery shopping in this new time warp we are all stuck in: There is plenty of fresh food of all types, you just have to cook it. Of course, if you like to eat out of cans, you might have a hard time adjusting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Cmurtha:

Hello everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm melinda:

@Franco I noticed that too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm chresti:

Hi Cmurtha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm melinda:

I wish I had a mask.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm ParUbi:

Ordered a cassette from Doom Trip records weeks ago, this has thrown them a wrench to be sure. They're been super cool about it though, sending me freebie unlock codes
  7:57pm RetroHawk:

Good evening everyone
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Gary:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:58pm ParUbi:

I've been thinking about the coffee filters and rubber bands thing, just in case I have to go back into the local groceries
Avatar 7:58pm LambdaCalculus:

Hey RetroHawk!
Avatar 7:58pm TDK60:

They're talking about closing most streets here in NYC. A good thing. I was walking down the middle of my street yesterday to stay away from folks.
Avatar 7:59pm LambdaCalculus:

NYC looks like a damn ghost town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm melinda:

@ParUbi is there a makeshift mask using those things?
  7:59pm RetroHawk:

how is everyone ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:59pm ParUbi:

I just go out to walk the dogs
Avatar 7:59pm Franco Twinkie:

Coffee filters!?! How could I forget about coffee filters?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm ParUbi:

@Melinda-- That's it! There's also one with rubber bands, staples, and paper towels.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm ParUbi:

They won't protect against anything microscopic, but some of that sneeze is macroscopic
Avatar 8:01pm coelacanth∅:

my local "health food" store won't let people in at all. you have to place the order via internet. i just wanted some bottles of juice and sweet potatoes but i don't do internet except from home and i wasn't about to go home, place the order and go back.
i'll be alright.
- and i'm not going to trust them to pick out my produce anyway.
Avatar 8:01pm LambdaCalculus:

I got the last OXZ CD copy on Bandcamp!
Avatar 8:01pm LambdaCalculus:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm doctorjazz:

Hi folks! Things are crazy (but traffic in the morning is great)!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:02pm chresti:

My son in sf says if he goes out wearing a mask, he might get harassed by someone because they think he´s hoarding masks
Avatar 8:02pm βrian:

Don't trust them to pick you produce any more than you would trust them to pick your nose.
  8:02pm Dean:

Next time you wash your hands, sing HB to Béla Bartók twice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm chresti:

Hi doc!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm ParUbi:

About coffee filters: "Coffee filters only allow for the escape of particles smaller than 10-15 microns, that is the same for common surgical masks. It can't stop viruses but it can stop aerosolized particles that contain viruses such as could be spread through coughing and sneezing. In short if everyone wore a coffee filter on their face it would help stop the spread of COVID-19."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm melinda:

@ParUbi exactly, they do say even makeshift masks are better than nothing. But since some expert sources were telling people otherwise and that only people with symptoms should wear them, it makes anyone with a mask look like they're sick. And if you put a coffee filter on your face you might look like a sick person doing a bad job of protecting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm Gary:

Dr. Jazz! βrian! Dean!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm chresti:

I´ll suggest that to him, wear a coffee filter, at least!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm ParUbi:

Not if I paint some big teeth on it or something-- then I'd just be deranged or something
Avatar 8:05pm coelacanth∅:

good point βrian because i don't trust them to do that either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm Gary:

@Lambda-C: Score!
  8:05pm Dean:

Coffee filters make nice hats, too. And that also makes you look sick.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:05pm melinda:

I don't trust grocers to pick my food, either.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm ParUbi:

You can look sick or you can look *sick*
Avatar 8:06pm Franco Twinkie:

Dean, I have refrained from ever asking you to explain yourself, but that comment about Bartok is a little oblique for a simpleton like me. What the fuck are you talking about?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm ParUbi:

Here's on coffee filter how-to, though I bet there are zillions: rizziallen.wordpress.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:06pm melinda:

@ParUbi haha!
Avatar 8:07pm coelacanth∅:

Bartok's birthday today
Avatar 8:07pm TDK60:

Many more folks are wearing masks now here. I've been wearing a bandanna, know it doesn't help much but maybe a bit.
Avatar 8:07pm coelacanth∅:

(i'd wish him a happy birthday but i doubt he's reading this)
Avatar 8:07pm Franco Twinkie:

Oh, duh.
Avatar 8:08pm TDK60:

Bartok? Is that a metal band?
Avatar 8:08pm coelacanth∅:

this Fela's perfect right now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm ParUbi:

I bet it would prevent spray, TDK60
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm chresti:

Now there´s a nice project for home, make masks. We have chemex filters,. I´ve been wearing scarves, better than nothing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm melinda:

My mom refrained from wearing a mask the last time she went to a store even though she has one, because she didn't want people to think she was sick. I think being an elder might give you a pass, though, in these circumstances.
Avatar 8:09pm coelacanth∅:

no TDK that's BarTök
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:09pm ParUbi:

You could also write "not sick" on the mask with a sharpie
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:10pm Gary:

I *want* people to think I'm sick so they stay away and don't get me sick with the sickness they *have* but don't know they have yet, dammit
Avatar 8:11pm TDK60:

Plus my bandanna is black & red with roses, sorta Zapatista-looking (which warms me inside).
Avatar 8:11pm coelacanth∅:

i guess if you wrote "not sick; just being considerate" people would get entirely too close to you to read it.
Avatar 8:11pm Franco Twinkie:

There is no mask shaming where we live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:12pm chresti:

Mask wearing has been in practice for years in our area.
Avatar 8:14pm βrian:

Yes, pretty common even in Midwestern college towns, these days.
  8:15pm Dean:

Today is Bartók's birthday. One guideine for handwashing has been to take as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice. The guidance has become what now we refer to as a "meme," thanks to that jerkoff Richard Dawkins.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm Gary:

Thanks, Dick Dawk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm Gary:

^Meme seed
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm chresti:

Haha coel. -Not sure if I am sick, I always feel this way- would take a long time to read too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm chresti:

Hi Brian and Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm doctorjazz:

There just still aren't enough masks around for medical offices and hospitals (at least in NY). We were given 2 masks, no gowns a week ago, told to be very careful with them. About a week and a half later, got 2 more masks, 1 gown, again asked to be careful with them.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:19pm Gary:

Bartók's Mikrokosmos is one of my all-time favorite classical projects
Avatar 8:19pm coelacanth∅:

haha, right chresti
Avatar 8:20pm coelacanth∅:

was told today they've determined one aspect of diagnosis, self or otherwise, is a fever is absolute; inevitable. i wonder if i'd know if i have a fever. i don't think i've had a fever in several decades but maybe i have and just didn't notice.
i don't own a thermometer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm ParUbi:

Wa-Alaikum-Salaam, Gary!
  8:21pm Dean:

When have I ever said anything oblique enough that it requires explanation, Franco?!

Hi, chresti.

Mikrokosmos is special. And the vioin duets. And of course the string quartets.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm chresti:

Yeah we don't have one either @coel
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm doctorjazz:

So far, I have 2 cousins (my wife's actually), 1 nephew who have caught it. 2 docs I work with are fairly sick (but not hospitalized)
Avatar 8:23pm Franco Twinkie:

My apologies Dean, I can only process so much information that might be useless nonsense regarding this thing. Case in point: The only thing I could stomach reading in the Sunday paper was Kenny Rodgers obituary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:23pm ParUbi:

I've heard that loss of the sense of smell and taste is common. I guess you can tell if someone stops listening to FMU
Avatar 8:23pm βrian:

We usually do sit-down dinners but have fallen short today. Six-year-old has called for popcorn and pickled herring as a stopgap.

Avatar 8:24pm TDK60:

You are welcome, Gary. // I prefer to sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" 4 times while washing hands, but it's kind of lonely singing a round alone...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm ParUbi:

I like using the litany of fear from Dune
Avatar 8:25pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, i'm acting as if i have it.
the truth is i have long-standing issues that might make it difficult to determine this in addition to
  8:25pm Dean:

No apology called for, Franco. I dish out massive flows of nonsense, I admit. But by definition, nonsense requires no explanation.
Avatar 8:25pm Franco Twinkie:

Wow, Doc! My thoughts to you and your family. Be careful, man!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm ParUbi:

Stay safe, Doc! I wish you health and safety
Avatar 8:27pm coelacanth∅:

yes, what they said dr.j and especially you, taking risks just by your occupation.
Avatar 8:29pm coelacanth∅:

Franco how's your mom? the home's in lockdown mode right?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm Gary:

Stay safe, Dr. Jazz!
Avatar 8:31pm TDK60:

I just turned down a request to take a walk with my brother. He doesn't seem to take this as seriously as I do. I now take walks alone for more control, so I can dart away from others.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:31pm chresti:

I heard the part about loss of smell, an early symptom, possibly.
  8:32pm Dean:

I always smell, but I have no taste.
Avatar 8:33pm LambdaCalculus:

Because it's also allergy season, my allergies tend to go off unless I take my meds. People around me are losing their shit when I sneeze, because A) not only do I sneeze so loud that everyone in NYC can hear me, and B) I could potentially knock a small house down, but because any kind of sneezing or coughing is considered "OHMYGOD YOU'RE INFECTED!!!", even when I DO tell people it's just my allergies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm chresti:

Haha Dean.
Avatar 8:35pm TDK60:

I plan on taking a walk tonight about midnight, less people. I'll take a flashlight, mask, and a boxing glove affixed to a broom. (Just kiddin' on that last)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm doctorjazz:

It seems fever, cough, chest tightness are the classic symptoms. But there are other presentations...losing taste and smell for a while are what some
  8:36pm Dean:

Say hi to Patsy Cline, TDK60.
Avatar 8:37pm TDK60:

I've been worried about that LambdaC as I sneeze a normal dust sneeze every day. Also loud, and usually 6 or 7 in a row.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm chresti:

Haha TDK@8:35
Avatar 8:38pm coelacanth∅:

the thing is one can have the virus and not know it; so even if that's not what makes one sneeze, it's a highly effective way of spreading it.

Coel, I went back on Sunday with another letter and a copy of L.A. Times to drive home the point. She is starting to get it. A little hippie girl with long dreads wheeled he up to the front door and let me get closer than the previous maniac who made me stand about 20 feet away. She looks great and was in a good mood. I actually went away feeling okay about her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm melinda:

@Gary I can sort of see why yet it is so good.
Avatar 8:43pm coelacanth∅:

cool, Franco. you just made me smile!

Catching up on the comments, thank you for the coffee filter suggestion. I used to be a coffee bean nerd but now drink tea. Checked and I have over 100 coffee filters.

Yes, read that, but this isn't price gouging, this is to make people buy just one so others can have some. images.app.goo.gl...
Avatar 9:17pm coelacanth∅:

i like the idea of charging a discouraging amount for 2 (though i might've made it 3) so as to ration it fairly, but it seems like a lot for 1 too.
