Regarding song title formatting, when I rip CDs I sometimes made adjustments to what the auto lookup finds. Sometimes I wonder if the CD cover should be the guide. Some releases will have all u/c for titles and / or performers. Of course it is unknown and often unlikely the the composers/artists had any input on anything before recent epoch of bandcamp etc. Thank you you professional wordsmiths for adding your considerations.

Many years ago, on a sunny afternoon bicycle ride past the Art Gallery of Ontario, I heard this wild and free saxophone wail, wrapped in strange metallic phlanging sounds, wafting on the breeze; and as I slowed to register it, there was David S. Ware, blowing the craziest extended solo, standing inside of the huge Henry Moore bronze sculpture that stands on that corner. It was unscheduled, and unscripted. And no one else was stopping to check it out. That was so cool. This Joe McPhee/Pauline Oliveros thing triggered that memory.

After the Oxford English Dictionary designated an emoticon as Word of the Year in 2015, I figured the living language was officially in free-jazz territory; so unless you're living under some form of editorial tyranny (professors, editors, fascistic overbearing pundits), you should style things however you think will best communicate your message to an audience. @doc I’m just saying, check this period Herbie out! (Maybe you meant you passed at the time but have since caught up with it)

DJpeterDE:

Now if you were to say Rock-it was selling out, I’d have a hard time disagreeing

Return to Forever was a gateway for me.

I can start to understand why @Stork has over six hours of Herbie planned for you, up next, over here: wfmu.org...

I used to love Return to Forever, but haven't listened to them for like 30 years
Avatar 🥁 11:40am

Mental arithmetic suggests that Herbie was 68 when he won the Best Album of the Year Grammy.

Dean:

Saw them live once. Stevie Wonder joined them mid-show to do a medley. Lenny White was the stand-out soloist.

perusing my vinyl collection reveals i must have sold my Return to Forever records at some point

DJpeterDE, I've lost (most) of my "jazz snob" attitude from fusion days, but haven't caught up with this stuff. Worth doing, for sure.

my older brother got the original return to forever album (the album by Chick Corea) and i was all set to have Chick Corea be my very first concert, but then i guess my brother probably found a girl to take with him.

Hello Jeff and al.

Ah the first Return to Forever with Flora Purim and Rodrigo's concerto.

@doc I was a snob then too.
Probably still a snob but about different things.
A sobering thought

Don't want to start an electric vs. acoustic argument, but Herbie is *so good* on the piano that I feel every time he rocks out, we are missing a potential great work of art. He is really one of the greats, up there with Tatum, Bill Evans, whoever you might care to name.

hey while i'm in the business is anyone else here interested in getting a wav file of a few David S Ware or Cecil Taylor albums?

This is kind of a rare (for '74) acoustic set for HH. Love him on Rhodes, though, too.

@WR, don't know if it was officially recorded (though they used to put out albums of NO.J&H highlights), but I'dbet a taper had putit out there somewhere.
