Favoriting Hinky Dinky Time with Uncle Michael: Playlist from April 17, 2020 Favoriting

Uncle Michael's avatar View Uncle Michael's profile Favoriting

Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Evan wins the prize. Yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:27pm
Uncle Michael:

I need to work on my chops. No doubt about it.
  2:28pm
Listener Robert:

efd, UM, think that was a 'bot at YouTube that picked up a copyright notice off a file or DVD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
Listener Scott:

Copyright holders set bots to automatically trigger takedowns. Humans aren't even involved. A yoga instructor friend was doing a class on YT live and got taken down b/c Billie Eilish could be heard in the background.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
doctorjazz:

Nice interview/music sequence, thanks, Jared!
  2:30pm
Listener Robert:

Because of course YouTube doesn't know about things like RIAA's licensing the content -- which I assume to include all media, not just the WFMU main stream and air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Uncle Michael:

I can't swear that streaming the show over YT is kosher. I didn't think about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
Uncle Michael:

And hi, Scott!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:32pm
efd:

it's different licenses. A license to broadcast over the air or online doesn't cover streaming that same content on YouTube.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:33pm
Uncle Michael:

Live and learn. I'm not usually naive...but there ya go.
Avatar 2:34pm
hyde:

i've seen stuff on YT get taken down like a violinist playing a clearly hundreds of years old public domain song but it gets flagged because the bots can't tell the difference between a rando violin player and some recording of the same tune that is actually still under copyright
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:34pm
Uncle Michael:

How are people doing live DJ sets all over YT, I wonder.
Avatar 2:34pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm
efd:

I've seen people complaining about their sets being shutdown on YT or Insta. I think it depends on how mainstream/current the music being played is, though as hyde noted the methodology for automatically identifying that content is not foolproof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm
Uncle Michael:

I guess I'll use my channel for a bird-feeder-cam.

hyde, this is one of Jared's selections, cut for time....and fit back in. I won't steal his thunder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Listener Scott:

Hi UM!

re Hyde's comment, yeah, YT risks nothing by preemptively taking down works, irrespective of legit public domain defenses that might be present. They'd prefer to keep rights holders happy than find a middle ground. The bots should be able to distinguish between performance of a public domain work (for which a valid but thinner copyright exists) and the underlying work itself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm
Uncle Michael:

Jon!
Avatar 2:40pm
hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Little Danny:

Nice Dead selection. Great sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm
Listener Scott:

Many (most?) WFMU shows could probably be aired over YT without triggering a bot but I'd guess a typical UM show would have 1 or 2 tracks that would.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
Uncle Michael:

I'm not steering clear of the hits!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm
doctorjazz:

Thanks for Jerry and the boys! Nice to hear him working those vocal cords (more than he usually does)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm
Listener Scott:

I didn't see the YT, but if you were merely simulcasting your show, you could transmit no sound to the YT feed, since it's merely supplementing the WFMU feed. People listening and watching here don't need sound coming out of both sources.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:47pm
doctorjazz:

And, as LD noted, the sound is quite good!
