Hello, all! Can anyone ID today's mystery LP-under-the-cassettes? If you're familiar with it, it should be very easy to recognize.

That mystery cover was indeed easy.

I didn't go to school with Elliott Sharp, but I can claim to have seen him so early on that he still had hair (some, anyway).

I can't hear the open of "Hail to the Chief" without going into the "Mediocre Presidents" song from the Presidents' Day/Valentine's Day "Simpsons" ep.

Hi Tony and fellow Hissers! I feel like I've seen that tape in the upper right corner before. Or at least that image.
Avatar 12:43pm
Tony Coulter:

Hey, Bob! That's Zoogz Rift. There is an LP version of that tape, on SST -- but the track list is substantially different.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm
Listener Bob in PGH:

Ahh, that must be it. I was in the LA area in the 80s.

Apparently, Zoogz Rift worked as a pro wrestler for a while, until he was injured badly.

Avatar 1:17pm

  1:26pm
Dean:

I vaguely recall reading about ZR in Trouser Press or Back Door Man.

Music critic Richard Gehr featured him in the Dec. 1, 1985, issue of SPIN, including a color photo. Dude was large. A Jan. 23, 1988, review in Billboard of Water II: At Safe Distance reads:

Self-consciously obnoxious L.A.-based songwriter/composer dips heavily into the Zappa/Captain Beefheart bag instrumentally but maintains his own distinctively abrasive lyrical persona. Obscenity-laced vocals aren't airworthy, but instrumental tracks (including a cover of "Walk Don't Run"!) deserve alternative attention.

More brains in jars....
Avatar 1:37pm
Tony Coulter:

... along with Kennedy's brain, I mean....
  1:38pm
Dean:

Richard Meltzer used to preserve dead birds in jars filled with Jello. I hired him to speak at my undergraduate college. He brought some jars and a turntable, on which he played Ornette Coleman when he had to use the restroom.

zoogz rift i remember, have some on cassette, off wfmu in the 80s. was it you playing it then Tony?
(or did you come on in the 90s?)

-but i think it's the 80s, by my location when i heard it.

It's actually tough to play much Zoogz Rift on the station proper/main stream, what with FCC language restrictions and all.

I wish. The former coworker I'm doing yardwork with sometimes burns a BIG leaf pile -- a bonnie great bonfire. But this time we'll pile the winter's crop of downed branches to be hauled awayyyyy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm
coelacanth∅:

Tony @2.01 i missed all of side a and the beginning of b but the title "buffy & jody" is familiar.
also, i recall quite a lot of fcc-prohibited phrases coming through my speakers in the 80s! especially Paul Cavenaugh's show and the Vanilla Bean's.

thanks for the bomb ass tape hiss

Enjoying the dissonance, it is in concert with the weather outside my estuary-facing livingroom window: snow driven by a nor-nor-easter of 60Kmh.

Fun show today, Tony~ thanksagain.
Avatar 2:56pm
Tony Coulter:

Well, I guess we won't make it to the end of the tape -- will have to drop the final track, after this one. Sorry!

The final track is not actually by James Hill, btw. It's a piece someone else sent him, which is tacked on at the very end of side B, after a spoken intro. He does that on both tapes of his I have.

Anyway, thanks for loaning me your ears, everybody. Hope to see you next week!
