Yeah, I lived briefly in Tucson eons ago. I was an east coaster and was surprised at the old cars.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43pm
Franco Twinkie:

Chris, we were talking about that car recently, and my friend Michael said "I forgot about the hole in the floor, but I do remember driving it to California in winter and wondering why it was so cold despite the fact that I had the heater on full blast."
Avatar 10:49pm
TDK60:

..it was 1971, I hitchhiked across Tucson, a spread-out city (like a lot of western cities). This old feller in an old car picked me up. The car looked like it was from '49 or '50 and the driver did too! Cowboy hat, suit jacket, tie, pistol strapped on his shirt! That ride was like being in 1949. And me a young longhair; what a trip.
  10:53pm
Chris Farrell:

I didn’t realize it got that cold in California. Mark Twain said the coldest winter he spent was a summer in San Francisco, but I just always assumed that’s because he was from the south (like the Deep South, like Corpus Christi or Shreveport).

I tried swimming in the Pacific up by Monterrey during May and it brought me to shrieking. Gave my dad a good laugh and left me knowing where to go for a good ice bath.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55pm

TDK, how far did the old cowboy take you?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm

Breaking sad news… The co-founder (with his wife) of the Grand Prospect Hall in Brooklyn has passed away. May all of his dreams come true! youtu.be...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm
Franco Twinkie:

TDK, The car with the vented floor broke down in the middle of an endless corn field in Southern Illinois. Since all are shit was in the car we decided I would stay back, while Michael hitched to the next town to find help. He was picked up by a guy in a pick-up that was a quilt of stolen parts. They were pulled over by the state troopers, and the driver was dragged away in handcuffs. The troopers told Michael there was a service station about a mile down the road, but wouldn't give him a ride. When he finally got back with a tow truck, that driver only had one arm. He fixed our car, and we were on are merry way, littering the highway with soda bottles all the way to Michigan.
Avatar 11:11pm
TDK60:

Ha Franco. I have more hitchhiking stories but they'll hafta wait. Night Sam and all you equus types.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13pm
Sam Segal:

Sad news indeed, Jake. RIP John Kolle.
  11:14pm
Chris Farrell:

I hitchhiked out of a carnival I was working on when I was 20 and got a ride from a guy with Vegas license plates who was bald and drove a Land Rover. I think it was Dana White, the guy who owned UFC. I didn’t know it at the time but evidentially UFC is big in Seattle and that where this guy was headed. Wouldn’t surprise me given my luck on that trip. The guy I was with asked me if I thought it was “that UFC guy?” My response was shocked that my travel partner clearly did not know what Joe Rogan looked like.

A side note skeptic perspective: hitchhikers have it easy, all I have to is ride. The driver takes on all the risk.

Night, Doc!

Chris Farrell:

To be honest I don’t remember. He might have? He did tell me to stay in school and not do drugs (or something to that effect). If he did allude to this being his identity it didn’t stick with me.

It wasn’t till years later I had this realization when I saw him on a show where he talked about living in Las Vegas and traveling to Seattle a lot for business. So who nose!
  11:23pm

Well Sam, Is that any worse than watching Bonanza at your moms house and falling asleep on the sofa? That was my big outing on Sunday.
  11:34pm
Chris Farrell:

@Franco- Is Bonanza better than Hee Haw? Or are they too different to compare?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

Antonia also said this: "Pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will." That guy was a major dude, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

Gramsci was an all time dude! Spent a lot of time in prison. He'd know a thing or two about the lockdown blues.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Sam Segal:

@Franco: An outing to another person's home does sound truly wild to me at this point!
  11:37pm
JakeGould:

The weird thing for me is I have always forced myself to avoid doing what my parents — World War II survivors — did was live in fear, only go shopping, worry about food and somewhat agoraphobic at times.

Now, I guess I have to adapt their behavior that I have shaken to now just deal with this crap while not losing my mind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
Franco Twinkie:

Chris, Not even the same planet. Hee Haw was a musical variety show shot on video with less that zero production values. Bonanza was shot on film and looked like an old John ford western. Both had moronic pretend country dialogue.
  11:45pm
Chris Farrell:

Yeah I googled Bonanza. My brother has developed country roots and for sure watches Hee Haw but could possibly also watch Bonanza.

I’m starting the movie Taxi Driver right now which I have never seen. I’m also halfway through “The Wrecking Crew” a documentary on YouTube about studio musicians.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
coelacanth∅:

i laughed at hee haw as a child... not at the jokes on hee haw, but at hee haw itself. i laughed that anyone existed that would think those jokes were funny.
but i still watched it sometimes -probably because nothing else was on at the time; but also because it had some excellent music. we made fun of people who liked country music yet i always had some degree of attraction to Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, bluegrass in general...and some early country pop, like John Denver and Lynn Anderson...
i'd probably like that show more now.
