@StringOP, It is said that Ella hated that song. My sense is that the classic jazz vocalists (like her) did what could be done in that vein. This is first time since March I haven't treated going to the store as a mission where I have my list and get in and out asap (hence my missing the first hour of DO today.) The selection was back to let's say 70 % of what was usual. And our normal used to be to buy basic essentials and anything else only if on sale. While I was still a bit price sensitive today I got what I wanted, so total was 50% more than usual. I did indulge in beef since I will have time to cook during the staycation and selection was good. But $3 for a sleeve of garlic, OMG.

@doctor, I like them too! But contemporary singers generally strike me as "Billie Holliday did a version of that, and you're going to try to beat it?" Now I prefer Meredith Monk or someone who isn't competing in the same ballpark.

@Jeff, you remarked on the length of the "= ism" piece. It would be easy to put together a show of very long pieces. But could you make up a whole show of the sort of music you play with only pieces <= 4 minutes, say? Maybe you've done this, and I've forgotten.

StringOFperils:

Part of the issue with jazz vocalizing is the choice to interpret a 'standard', as a starting point, as opposed to breaking out of that completely. After a few decades of that strategy, it gets tired. I too actually like many jazz vocalists, from Al Hibbler to Johnny Hartman to Norma Winstone to Annette Peacock...etc. Jazz vocalizing is easy to complain about though, because so much of has eagerly embraced cheesiness...to the point where it almost falls in with exotica.

I got strawberries at the freezing farmers' market yesterday. I had very low expectations. Tried them today, and they are unbelievably good! So there still is some hope for the world.
Will consider making strawberry vichyssoise of the remainder.

The complicated thing is, being able to think critically about stuff, and look beyond the surface of things, is an incredibly important skill. Not for the purposes of bullshitting your peers, but for, y'know, reading the news and such.

"What does it evoke for youuuuuu?"

Seriously, conceptualism is best served by NOT articulating the concept. When the whole point is "what the ever-loning fuck?", for god's sake...don't answer the question!

Tom Wolfe's The Painted Word does a good job of dressing the art world down, if you're looking for a slim hit job.

Research re: the first cut in this set: Jay Hoggard hasn't put out an album since 2009, and only on his own label since 2003.

@Jeff, contemporary art is even easier to dis than jazz. But the hit jobs ignore the few fantastic works that do come out and change the way we think or see the world.

The more recent 'Playing To The Gallery' by British artist Grayson Perry is also an amusing and clear-seeing talk about the art world and all that...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am
Jeff Golick:

@LG thanks for that. I similarly have a sense that Hoggard strayed from the One True Path, but am not really sure where he went.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am
Jeff Golick:

@LG, and agreed. I'm not a fan of Wolfe's take -- he's pretty regressive -- and am more sympathetic to conceptual stuff than he is -- but it works as a critique of it all.

Warhol liked to watch people jerk off. I'm sure when people were jerking off over his work, he adored it. But he just watched. He didn't help.

I feel your nausea UM. It's unfortunate that it's like that. It undermines itself. ON the other hand, I've grown to appreciate the overt foppishness of that world. So much easier to be a real person.

It's a bargain an artist decides to make ot not. Anyone can make anything they want, and refuse to explain it. But the likelihood is that if you refuse to play the game, you choose to excuse yourself from the marketplace. You have to be fortunate enough to have the priesthood explain you to themselves, otherwise. That rarely happens.

I think the problem is often in the assessment. There are a lot of folks describing difficult art who have no business doing so, and can elevate a lot of crap in the process.

I think The Nihilist Spasm Band's Bill Exley did the definitive art/corporate speech in "I have nothing to say". I suggested that as a translation for a coworker who is tasked with translating the musings of the director of my workplace to English

I think there are a number of well thought-of artists who provide no clues to what they are thinking, @UM. Or, like Yoko Ono, they say things like, "This work is trying to nail the sky to the gallery ceiling." Then you are back to thinking your own thoughts, which is the whole point of conceptual art.

The 'art world' is a business like any other. This is capitalism, and we're swimming in that medium. So, it's rife with new-product language, seasonal catch-phrases, formal tropes (gawd, I got so sick of snarling dogs and rabbit heads in the 80s), and as with all other employment hierarchies, there's bullshit: sycophantic bullshit, self-marketing bullshit, self-ideation bullshit, essentialness to a general public bullshit, and probably the biggest bullshit of all is that that public has no ideas about anything and it needs the world explained to it, in the most obfuscatory fairy tales it's willing to pay for.
