I guess things were looser in those days and they didn’t have a stick up their arses about such things, and teams of heavies on every door etc. I’m taking my son to loads of gigs now and luckily he’s so tall now that he can pass for 18 easily and get in everywhere.

My dad worked up and down Bleeker in the fifties: Kettle of Fish, Minetta's, Derby Steakhouse. For a while I could always get a drink or even a meal along there, but everything has changed ownership or closed now.

@DavidinLondon: Freer days indeed. You know in NYC the club scene changed for the worse in the 1980s when drinking age was raised from 19 to 21 in 1985? And then the 1990s came along with the stupid cabaret laws and such.

My one hope for NYC in this Coronoavirus mess is the silver lining of perhaps those two things changing — or being eliminated — as local bars, restaurants and venues struggle with a dead economy.

Someone above mentioned 16 RPM LPs. I later discovered, aside from children's talk records, as they fit more songs, they were often used as party records. Trini Lopez did a 16 RPM partee album. Lo-fidelity I think.

@DavidinLondon: True! But the other factor is this: If the drinking age is 21, the only people you get sneaking into places like that will be 18 to 21. If the drinking age is 18 you get teenagers who are exposed to hip and cool stuff at a time in their life when they can soak it in and create as. By 21 you are on a career path.

Seems like wacky sociology until you think about it a bit; raising the drinking age like that effectively smothers a creative class.

Jake, yes I agree. Certainly here in the UK, the pubs also provided a good platform for the youngest of bands (in the age bracket you mention) to cut their teeth before playing ‘proper venues’. It was a thriving scene in the 80s.
