Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm doctorjazz:

Hi Irene and Drummers Out There!
(Nice to hear Trane, appropriate in the current climate)
  12:07pm Dean:

Bodhi Tree. A marvelous LA bookstore that shuttered a few years ago.
Avatar 12:08pm gongoleer:

Hello world from chilly Vermont. Having issues with signal and might not get to hear program today so enjoy the day and music. Be kind and caring to everyone you encounter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:08pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Maggie! Hey doctorjazz, gongoleer and Dean! Good words to live by, gongoleer.
Avatar 12:10pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@Granny, I will, by UK standards it is a tad warm here, I feel Mother Earth is toying with us with the possibility of a cracking Summer but with no pubs to frequent on a warm summer evening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:13pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

Dean: that place was amazing, i miss it
Avatar 12:16pm Brian in UK:

Sean, baking hot today, too hot to work in the garden for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:18pm fleep:

Good morning, Irene and Irenists
Avatar 12:19pm Malcolm:

Hi Irene and listeners :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:20pm coelacanth∅:

wow, this is a really out-there version of 4-cornered room!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm WR:

Hi folks, have been listening to the drummer stream all day so far. Working so can't be active on the playlist comments, but taking a moment to say hello and than Irene for the selections. I think all here are of the mind that we hope and work for peace, we also must continue to press for justice and freedoms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:22pm Irene Trudel:

Hey Sean and Brian, I hope the music will cool you off. Welcome fleep and Malcolm!
Avatar 12:22pm Sean in Bristol UK:

@ Brian, I might have asked you in the past but where in the UK are you, sir? Great track form Mr Frisell, thank you Irene.
Avatar 12:24pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Irene, it is blinkin' hot here and not a whisper of AC!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:25pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks for those thoughts, WR. Glad to have you in the background for however long you can listen.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm WR:

And I don't mean to be a troll to write that and not participate more, but, but, oh the Ornette selection, so beautiful. Laters. Gotta get report done for this afternoon meeting, blah blah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:26pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

take care, WR!
  12:27pm Dean:

On March 9, 2019, two months after my mom moved into the memory/dementia wing of an assisted living facility near our place in Berkeley, a staff-led activity was a celebration of Ornette's birthday. They played side 1 of this album to a couple dozen rather elderly folks, all of whom seemed impressed by it.
Avatar 12:27pm Brian in UK:

Sean, we are in South Shropshire, north-east of Ludlow, along the south side of Wenlock Edge.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:27pm WR:

Wow Dean, so cool.
Avatar 12:28pm gongoleer:

I'm listening but had to leave for a hot spot. Oh well. Such is life living in un-fiberoptic-ed Vt. Smooth jazz line now is sublime. Thank you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:28pm WR:

Ok, laters for real for now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:30pm Doug Schulkind:

Love and blessings to your family, Dean. Love and blessings to all.
Avatar 12:30pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Brian, not a million miles away, without looking at the map, a drive north up the M5?
  12:30pm wendy del formaggio:

@gongoleer: Are we neighbors? I live in Windham County. Always nice to see another VTer on here.
  12:31pm wendy del formaggio:

Irene, so glad you’re back on the air.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:31pm Irene Trudel:

Dean, that's a fantastic story! Sounds like your mom was in with a very open-minded bunch. Music has healing powers, as we all know
  12:33pm Dean:

Well, there's open-minded and open-minded. Knowing my mom, I'd say the music circumvented mind and, significantly, ideology, and went straight to heart and soul.
  12:34pm Dean:

Thank you again, Doug.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:34pm Deborah:

So happy to hear you again!
Avatar 12:35pm gongoleer:

@wendy del formaggio. Yikes, another Vt.monter and from same county. Great! I'm in Brattleboro. Yup,neighbors. Used to own record store by Latchis theatre. Think I know you.
  12:39pm wendy del formaggio:

@gongoleer: Yup! I think I know you too. Your store was there in...let’s see...mid 90s, right? When I worked at Mocha Joe’s then, Ellen used to send me to your store for CDs for the cafe. My first DJ gig, one could say. Nice to see you here!
  12:39pm Peter K.:

Beauty is indeed a rare thing, but Irene's show always has it in plentiful supply. Off to an amazing start!
Avatar 12:40pm Sean in Bristol UK:

A stonking set to start the show, wonderful!
Avatar 12:41pm Brian in UK:

Sean, take the Wye valley road then A49, much quieter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:42pm redkayak:

Good afternoon all :)
  12:43pm Dean:

This Evans piece is the first of his I recall hearing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm melinda:

Hi everyone!
Avatar 12:44pm Brian in UK:

melinda, welcome to the sanctuary!
Avatar 12:45pm gongoleer:

@wendy del....You are correct. I remember it & you well. Such a big wide yet small world. Thanks to Irene and her show. Love the serendipity and kismet of life. I do remember you as being a DJ, too, right? Write if you want: getmusic@sover.net. Store was from 1991-2004, when raging inferno of a fire in my building put me out of business. And life goes on.
Avatar 12:46pm gongoleer:

@Melinda. Hey howdy.
  12:48pm wendy del formaggio:

@gongoleer: Thanks for your email. I shall write soon. What a fun way to connect: here on Irene’s show! Yes, my show is tonight 8-10pm on WVEW. See you on the radio!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:55pm Irene Trudel:

Hio Deborah, wendy, redkayak, Peter, and melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:56pm Irene Trudel:

And of course, 'hi' to you, Doug! I'm falling a bit behind in the comments.
Avatar 12:57pm gongoleer:

Sounds great. I look forward to your mail. I'll tune in to show. I switch between VPR and VEW and that's all I listen to. It's flabbergasting how a show from NYC reaching the world unites two people from just around the corner. WOW!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm redkayak:

@Irene - Ahoy captain! Sounding good out here in the Imperial Midwest ;)
Avatar 1:01pm Brian in UK:

redkayak, have you constructed your coracle yet?

Avatar 1:10pm Malcolm:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:10pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks redkayak. I'm feeling a little scattered in my planning today.
Avatar 1:10pm Brian in UK:

redkayak, piece of cake you, could knock one out in a weekend or two!!
Avatar 1:12pm gongoleer:

@Wendy. My mind is blown!!! I'm near VT. Country Deli and know Greenleaf very well. Only mile or so away. Tell you about that later. Maybe we go for a walk sometime. @Irene: Digging the gypsy violin. Thanks.

Avatar 1:15pm TDK60:

  1:15pm rw:

And good morning!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:17pm Irene Trudel:

I know rw! In a sense not much has changed.
Avatar 1:18pm Hubig Pie:

gongoleer, I'm only 12 miles from Wyoming
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

gongoleer and Wendy: it's thrilling to witness you discovering your connections, i love WFMU!
Tuning in from Potrero Hill in sunny San Francisco (we're still here! YAY!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm Irene Trudel:

I love that the world is sort of brought together here through all you listeners and the music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:22pm Granny Spicy Tuna (e/em):

I must say, these lovely sounds, my rose oolong and a kitty within patting distance are co-mingling to make me feel alright.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Irene Trudel:

Sounds like my kind of day, Granny! Happy to contribute.
Avatar 1:23pm gongoleer:

@Malcolm Thanks. I lived in Aberystwyth,Wales for 6 months years ago. @TDK60 Yes, I know what you mean. Lived there for 2 years in late 60's when things were different but still turbulent. @Hubig Pie-Never been there but someday maybe when its safer to travel again. What state? @Granny, Gotta love those hills & your avatar. Spent time at Big Sur. @Irene. There's a movement developing here.
Avatar 1:23pm Hubig Pie:

Wyoming is a country, according to Sal
Avatar 1:27pm TDK60:

Where are you gongoleer? Wales?
Avatar 1:27pm gongoleer:

@Hubig Pie-A wide open country so I hear.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:28pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:30pm gongoleer:

@TDK60 Not in Wales now. Moved away in 1971/72. Been in Vermont for many years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33pm pantz:

I grew up in Laramie in the 70's. It certainly felt like another country back then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:37pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Uncle Michael and pantz! Hearing from people all over as usual.
Avatar 1:39pm TDK60:

Ah Vermont. Been there twice. Love the mountains and green. I've heard Aberstwyth is a Welsh language area.
Avatar 1:39pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Just about to dish up dinner, perfect accompaniment,
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm pantz:

Welcome back, Irene. I missed your show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Irene Trudel:

Here are links to some of the aid organizations I mentioned last break: -The George Floyd Memorial Fund:

-Youth-Led Response to the Murder of George Floyd:

- The Lake Street Council:

- Midway United:
Avatar 1:40pm TDK60:

And hiya Malcolm Manchester.
  1:41pm wendy del formaggio:

Thanks for the George Floyd GoFundMe info, Irene. His family has raised $7.3million as of right now. It can’t compare with him still being with them, alive, but I hope the response gives George’s loved ones the knowledge that we are in solidarity with him whether we’re out protesting his murder, or sending financial support, or both. There are many ways to show up with love.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Irene Trudel:

Mmn, Sean. Happy to provide dinner music. What are you having?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Irene Trudel:

Wow, Wendy! Yesterday the fund was at $6 million. As you say, it can't bring George back, but maybe it can help the family channel the anger and get justice.
Avatar 1:43pm Sem:

Good afternoon, Irene, and greets, all, from the sunny yet chilly shores of the Bay of Fundy.
Your show is a soundtrack to a pair of female hummingbird battling for dominance over my feeder, filled w/ artisanal sugar water.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:45pm Deborah:

This music is both motivating and relaxing. I could continue online teaching or take a break. Either will be excellent.
Avatar 1:47pm Sean in Bristol UK:

My ex partner is listening and she says what a wo dermal voice you have, Irene and Rose is hoping to meet you one day
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49pm Irene Trudel:

Sounds nice, Sem! My Aunt in Seattle used to have hummingbird feeders on her porch that overlooked the area from a high hill. Deborah, I recommend a break if you can take it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm melinda:

@gongoleer what took you to Aberystwyth? My late husband lived there for 6 months also but in the late 90s, I visited for a week. Interesting town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:58pm melinda:

Judy Collins is one of my favorite vocalists.
  2:00pm Alan Cynics:

Home late...but just in time for Gale to hear her Pefkin song! :) Will catch up the first 2 hours later.Thank you! Hope you had a great birthday :)
Avatar 2:01pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Beautiful, beautiful track from Judy Collins
Avatar 2:06pm gongoleer:

@Melionda. I was based in Wales working with a British musician. I am drummer. Wales is special for sure. A primordial place. And yes, Aber. is wonderful with college there. I lived just over the hill along the coast, a short walk to town.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:06pm Summer and Michael and Sylvia:

Lovely sounds, Irene! Good "morning"!
Avatar 2:13pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Likewise, Irene, I was transfixed with the launch and docking, a major step forward in the evolution of man perhaps
Avatar 2:15pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Public Service Broadcasting, awesome, awesome, lucky enough to see them live at The O2 Academy in Bristol
Avatar 2:15pm gongoleer:

Hopefully as space gets further pioneered the world will find ways to live in peace with humanity.
Avatar 2:17pm Brian in UK:

@melinda and gongoleer, guess that you both went to the Camera Obscura when in Aber.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:19pm Michael 98145:

space IS the place
Avatar 2:20pm gongoleer:

@Brian in UK, No I didn't know or was aware of it at the time. I imagine it's to do with camera collecting or photography which happens to be a vocation of mine.
Avatar 2:24pm Brian in UK:

There is also a good one in Bristol by Clifton Bridge.
Avatar 2:26pm Sean in Bristol UK:

What can I say, this is a set of magnificence, ok, this will be a bit weird but go with me people, if Irene was a Queen or princess back in the the 11th/12th century I would be bowing before you my Queen and offering you a potato, ok move forward two centuries!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:28pm melinda:

@Brian I didn't know about it either. Too bad.
Avatar 2:29pm Sean in Bristol UK:

So I don't sound like a demented idiot, Irene, you are Queen Elizabeth, I am Sir Walter Raleigh, ok I will shut up now!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm Irene Trudel:

Indeed, Michael! Thanks Sean, and sorry for the drop-out in Public Service Broadcasting-- a bit unexpected.
Avatar 2:32pm gongoleer:

@Brian in UK, thanks for tip, link and referencing Constitution Hill. How did I miss it when there? Duh! Guess I was too busy with the music. I lived on other side of the hill in north end. Should've bought home there when had opportunity. Now real estate has skyrocketed, but I'd go back in a heartbeat if had the chance.
Avatar 2:34pm Malcolm:

windham hill seems like it was an consistent label, I always enjoy what I hear.
Avatar 2:35pm gongoleer:

I recall looking out my window seeing sheep meandering in the fields along the cliffs and also Ireland on a clear day. What a glorious sight to behold.
Avatar 2:37pm gongoleer:

FYI everyone. Founder of Windham Hill lives next town to me in Brattleboro, Vt. Has been here for years and has outstanding recording studio on premises. Just a bit of trivia.
Avatar 2:37pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Oh my goodness, what a beautiful track
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Irene Trudel:

Yes, Malcolm, Windham Hill was always Will Ackerman's vision, although sometimes it got a little to New Age-y for me.
Avatar 2:39pm Sean in Bristol UK:

As each week, mind blown!
  2:40pm Dean:

Anthony Braxton's two Seven Standards LPs were on a child label of Windham Hill, Magenta.
Avatar 2:40pm Malcolm:

wow! Is he still putting out music? there's a nice erik satie ecord on windham hill I used to own, can't remember who the performer is/was
Avatar 2:40pm Brian in UK:

Past Light was the first I heard of William Ackerman and WH.
Avatar 2:42pm gongoleer:

@Irene, have you heard is more recent projects? Recently, before Covid, his group performed at Carnegie Hall. Really outstanding and not so New Agey but still has elements. Y'all should google him.
Avatar 2:43pm gongoleer:

@Malcolm, I think it was George Winston-piano.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Irene Trudel:

Whose projects, gongoleer? Will Ackerman?
Avatar 2:46pm gongoleer:

Yes, Will's projects. He's got a killer line up of musicians. I'll text you when I hear of him playing somewhere near you.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:49pm Irene Trudel:

Well, nobody's playing anywhere right now. But I will check out Will's more recent projects. I do like his guitar playing.
Avatar 2:50pm gongoleer:
