So yeah, last night, a friend of mine who was born and raised in SoHo NYC took pix of looters in SoHo. Mostly White kids; caused a hell of a lot of damage. Dior, Sonos, Diesel, every high end shop was thoroughly worked over. Luckily nobody stopped him from taking pix; OTOH he is a pro photographer and had a long lens. He was also able to set up a tripod on his roof and shoot from there.

And I was at a protest yesterday at Barclays Center where the crowd was mixed, the vibes were sad, respectful and peaceful and where it was clear — from signs and actions — if you are white you should be there to support and be a true ally that holds space. This was in the afternoon.

These looters in SoHo are clearly opportunists to me. They’re jerks because honestly I could care less about merch being stolen but I care about their actions blowing back on the black community.

@lukavino: My favorite WFMU story related to not knowing the gender of the artist is Sheila B. thinking that the “Bee Gees” were women — based on singing style — and then being stunned to hear they are all men… Big hair men…

@Mark: Decent photo. What’s of more interest to me is Jeremiah Moss’s other tweets and retweets highlighting who the rioters are. Like this one from a veteran NYC reporter: “The looting in SoHo Is quite an elaborate scheme. it’s a complicated web of cars with out-of-state plates, the use of Revel scooters, CitiBikeNYC’s and Uber’s to get away. But most that i’ve observed have been waking away with the goods in hand past cops.” twitter.com...

And then this video of protestors in Washington, D.C. grabbing instigator and hand him over to the police: ‘Peaceful Protestors grab an agitator destroying property and they “TAKE HIS ASS!” To the police!” twitter.com...

I fully realize that WFMU has a very respected “no politics” rule for DJs and such. And commenters try to abide by this as well.

But seeing white people live action role play mayhem at the expense of the suffering of black people is sickening.

Wonder if the CitiFike, Uber and Revel geolocation data will be grabbed to out these looters?

WFMU DJs don't talk about the news because its mostly a distraction from the music. Sometimes (like Clay playing What's Going On and his own song this morning) , it is relevant to the times we're living in.
  10:10am
JakeGould:

Also, one last word on this: I urge anyone who is confused about the looting in SoHo to read Jeremiah Moss’ recent tweets. He’s passionate about NYC, loathes gentrifiers, documents the NYC that is fading away and general has no sympathy for the high-end mall SoHo has become… And yet he is posting valid accounts from multiple sources outing the fact the SoHo looters are not from NYC, are not there to protest a murder or even economic injustice. They are simply pure opportunists unassociated with any of the real protests: twitter.com...

  10:53am
JakeGould:

In the case of old Hollywood musicals, I think they are best seen in a large group in a theater; something we sadly now cannot do.

One of the most profound childhood experiences I ever had was being taken with my parents when I was 11 years old to go see “Fiddler on the Roof” on Kings Highway in the 1970s.

I was the literal only person under the age of 60 there. And the movie bored me at the time. But then when “Sunrise, Sunset” comes on suddenly a theater filled with elderly Jews — many victims of World War II violence and prior — just sings loudly in harmony.

You can’t get that experience streaming.

You too, Joe, thank you for another great and free form show. I really like this track from The Serpico score. You played "Alone in the Room" awhile back and that is great too. The same composer scored a French film called Z, directed by Greek filmmaker Costa-Gavras and is another great score.
