Gary this Tamraz sounds more influenced maybe by Euro music (Greek pop?) than Arab music. Can you inform?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm
Gary:

Man, good question, TDK. I'm not sure I can shed light, other than to note the diversity and historical flows of places like Syria
  7:53pm
peter:

some of these tracks seem to have a Persian-y "shesht-o-hasht" (6/8) groove like I've been reading about in Farzaneh Hemmasi's book Tehrangeles Dreaming!
Avatar 7:54pm
tim abdellah:

Assyrian communities come from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. This sounds more Persian-influenced to me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:54pm
Gary:

Jermain is (was?) Assyrian, which is an ethnic subgroup? I think. Largely Christian, although as Tim has noted, that one track likely has Jewish origins. I think things are always more mixed up, especially historically in this region, than we sometimes imagine. And, yes, Peter is mentioning Persian influence now. Let me put it this way: The best translator of Turkish poetry in America is a Persian Jew who moved here from Turkey in the 50s (a friend of mine)

Meant to comment that I knew nothing of Bernadette Mayer before reading your playlist and following the links. Thank you.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:56pm

Also, yeah, "Doogle Shapiereh" sounds more like a Persian word to my ears than Arabic, although they share quite a bit (also share with Hindi and Urdu)

I played in an Assyrian wedding band for a number of years Turlock, California. Depending on the demographic of attendees at the wedding, we'd do songs in Arabic or Persian (in addition to the singer's original songs in Assyrian).

She's singing in Assyrian language, which has its own alphabet, and is related to Aramaic (the language Jesus spoke).
