Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
David Dichelle:

Hey Carmichael, it is in fact part of the river system with all of its weir'dness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:44pm
David Dichelle:

Flood control and leveling, I think, although I'm no expert.
Avatar 3:48pm
Carmichael:

@Brian, the neighbor's dog passed away at about the same time as Spencer. They just yesterday rescued a new one, a shepherd/corgi mix.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 3:50pm
Bas NL:

Looks like a V-notch weir used for controlling water levels (before the weir). In the past i have constructed instrumentation for measuring water levels on weirs like that.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 3:52pm
WR:

Having wolfed down some pasta, I relax a bit and contemplate the photo. Very interesting. I'll later look at it on a computer. In the USA most water control is done by concrete. Interesting to see what has been done by brick and stone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:53pm
David Dichelle:

Thanks, Bas, good to in fact have a real expert here. We have a variety of constructs like that here, although I suppose they all serve similar purposes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:55pm
David Dichelle:

The light was actually quite beautiful, not sure if it really comes across in the picture.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 3:56pm
WR:

OMG, you played a tune sung by Hermes Nye! I met him. A Dallas Texas lawyer who was an active amateur folklorist . I should look up what is on the web about him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:58pm
David Dichelle:

WR: Nice, was it at a concert? And yes, that's about everything I know about him, too. This was a Smithsonian Folkways release.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:02pm
Brian in UK:

David, thanks for your diligence withe the Rouds.
Looks like the ultra violet light was strong in the photograph.

Crikey. What a coincidence.
Sorry to hear about Spencer, Carmichael
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:12pm
Bas NL:

Oww, i got that LP by Alpha Blondy. Love it!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Bas NL:

Especially this track.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
Sem:

Phew, thank for the clarification.
What Stanley said, Carmichael. Hurts, I know.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm
David Dichelle:

Oh sorry to hear that Carmichael.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Stanley:

I had the pleasure of seeing Alpha Blondy in Switzerland in the eighties. Great reggae band from Africa.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
David Dichelle:

Bas, yes another old favorite album of mine as well, playing a lot of my old cassette-era music today, it seems.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:15pm
David Dichelle:

Good greetings Stanley and LOT!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:17pm
Brian in UK:

David, are these times for digging out records etc and having a good listen?

Can anyone recommend a good starting record for Alpha Blondy.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:18pm
WR:

My Hermes Nye meeting was a lunch meeting at a chain diner. I worked at a community arts organization and when he donated I recognized the name and we talked a bit. He invited me to lunch.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:19pm
David Dichelle:

Brian: Sure the earlier ones in particular, Jah Glory, Apartheid is Naziism, Cocody Rock. Jerusalem.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm
Bas NL:

I must say Cocody Rock, his second, was a bit disappointing after Jah Glory. I didn't really follow Alpha Blondy after that, i'm afraid.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
chresti:

Hi David and continentals!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:22pm
WR:

I was hoping Mr. Nye would be a source for folkloric recordings beyond what was released by Folkways. He was interested to interview me because I had lived in Houston before moving to Dallas. He was researching "surfer English". A pleasant encounter but neither of us got what we were looking for.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
David Dichelle:

Hey Chresti!
  4:23pm
Mark R:

Hey you said you had some 3 Mustaphas 3 to play and you did, by crikey! Fela always welcome, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:23pm
David Dichelle:

WR: Sounds interesting nonetheless. Do you speak Surfer English?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm
David Dichelle:

Hey Mark, I do often forget things like that, but not always.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
David Dichelle:

Bas, I know what you mean but there are some good and great tracks on all those albums, I'd say.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:26pm
Stanley:

Pardon me for asking but what is Surfer English?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:27pm
Michael 98145:

"hodad" and the like?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
chresti:

Hang ten?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
Bas NL:

Thanks David, i'll check out Apartheid is Naziism and Jeruzalem!
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
Sem:

Totally tubular?

Hey, chresti. Knew you'd have some surfer stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
David Dichelle:

Bas, I will try to remember to play more off those albums as well.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:29pm
Brian in UK:

Thanks David and Bas.
Avatar 4:31pm
Carmichael:

Are you gnarly or are you a gremmie?
Avatar 4:32pm
Carmichael:

I was a ho-daddy myself.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:32pm
Michael 98145:

Hang loose, riders
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
Brian in UK:

Saw a short programme with Tony Allen explaining his technique, he seemed to hold the sticks so loose but such a simple effective beat.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:33pm
Stanley:

Okay, I see, surfers have their own language.
I suppose this will also extend to skate boarders.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:34pm
WR:

Though I went surfing regularly during my high school years, I knew more about The Animals, The 13th Floor Elevators The Doors and The Velvet Underground than than what kids said when acting silly, i mean cool, on the beach.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Bas NL:

I already find web-surf English challenging at times..
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
Stanley:

Nice little mix of styles in this Ikenga Super Stars. New to me.
Avatar 4:36pm
Carmichael:

I think skateboarders (sidewalk surfers) adapted and updated the lexicon. i do know what it means to get chongo-ed.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:38pm
Stanley:

Chongo-ed? Probably best I don't look it up.
Avatar 4:39pm
Carmichael:

It involves an immovable object, like a pole, striking you in a sensitive place at high speed.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:39pm
WR:

A major memory i have from surfing is hearing Everly Brothers, Roy Orbison and Chuck Berry set of songs blasting loudly endless repeating from a tourist gift shop near the beach.
  4:40pm
Mark R:

Uh-oh, the stream is having those problems again.
Avatar 4:40pm
Carmichael:

Where did you surf, WR?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:40pm
David Dichelle:

I'm showing no drops, anyone else having problems?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
WR:

I'm not hearing any stream problems.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Bas NL:

All fine on the 128k on my end..
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm

Smooth here on the pop up-ed.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:41pm
Sem:

Pop up fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:43pm
David Dichelle:

Thanks, must have been one of those quirks out there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:45pm
David Dichelle:

Is there any particular Texan surfer slang?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:46pm
WR:

Texas. Galveston, Surfside mostly. A few times went to Corpus Christy. Best surf was early morning when tide was changing. So would get up at 4am, be out by 5am and surf until 8 or 9am, then fall asleep in the car listening to Chuck Berry & Everly Brothers.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:47pm
WR:

David, that is what Hermes Nyes was investigating.
  4:48pm
Mark R:

Sounds OK now. I'm really enjoying this set. Complements the warm temps nicely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
David Dichelle:

Interesting stuff, WR, sociolinguistics can be quite fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:49pm
David Dichelle:

Thanks Mark, glad it was only a brief glitch.
Avatar 4:50pm
Carmichael:

Wow, wonder what the break would be like in Texas. I surfed all over California, from Manhattan Beach up to Santa Rosa. Except for Dana Point, which is not for the faint of heart.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
WR:

My days of surfing were 66 and 67, summer 68 my family moved to Dallas and i never surfed again. So not surfer for life type, but i still have every LP I bought back then. In storage.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:52pm
Sem:

Sub-continental jazz. Cool.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:54pm
WR:

Surf was so tame in Texas that when a hurricane came there would be 100s of people trying to finally get some exciting waves.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:56pm
Stanley:

That T.K. Ramamoorthy chugged along very nicely.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
Bas NL:

Great set again!
Avatar 4:57pm
Carmichael:

This music is actually not too far from Dick Dale's, who used to play in his family's Lebanese restaurant.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:57pm
WR:

I was pleased when could get a 3 or 4 footer that would give a 20 or 30 yard ride.

Right, Carmichael @4:57, it made sense when I learned the origin of Dick Dale's great Miserlu.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
chresti:

Hi Sem, that's about the extent of my surfer lingo.
Avatar 5:49pm
TDK60:

That must be a lute in there?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:50pm
WR:

Perhaps not ironically if you surf the web you will find much more about the history and lingo of surfing than about the charming lefty amateur folklorist Hermes Nye.
Avatar 5:52pm
TDK60:

I saw a documentary on Igor Stravinksy recently, from 1966. He was in Toronto to conduct an orchestra. A young Julian Bream approaches Igor, asks to play him some lute. Igor looked as if he /really/ listened hard.
