A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Trouble, I feel you. One thing that this sudden enforced home-based work has shown us is that we did NOT value cutting-edge tech over the years. The demands work makes on these machines are so much greater than what we require bumbling along in our private lives. It's hard to suddenly make your home act like a pro space. We already appreciate so much what you have managed to do!

But also: what UncleMarty said!

@steveo: when employers now start talking about cutting down the real estate footprint, what they are also doing is taking away collective spaces from labor. An atomization of the work force also takes away its power.

Is my feeling.

Just the idea of fighting it on the basis that there are matters more important than the bottom line.

HH - Although many love working from home, this is yet another instance of employer shifting costs onto the employee (Uber is evil). The IRS gives a deduction to home office space because even they see it as an expense ... of course, an increase in pay might balance that, but we all no how ephemeral that is ...

@Dean yeah, i can’t help but be a little cynical about the larger scope of these decisions — clearly the Resident expects to get his way every time, but also...if the power structures have felt a little shaking in their pillars, acknowledging LGBTQ+ rights and preventing the travesty of deportation of the Dreamers might be quietly seen as “safe” conservative decisions that won’t threaten their grip on power. I wouldn’t expect them to make similar decisions on voting rights, because voter suppression is precisely how elected officials maintain their power. Huge decisions in favor of the good-hearted people of this country are nonetheless HUGE...but at the top they may look at these as bones they could safely toss to try and placate the gnashing masses of savages at the gates (hi, us, present, yes).

And also, I have a slightly different view on the statues that commerorate our slavery past. Should be taken down, for sure but I think they should be put into a history museum and given an explanation educating people of the dark and terrible times they represent. Then, they can then be, literally, confined to history.

Damned ambiguous pronouns! Brown left his estate to the poor children of Georgia and South Carolina (hope those are the right states), where he grew up. Very little of that actually got to those children, sadly. The story is too weird and complex for a comment board.

Matt Fiveash:

James McBride used to have lunch every Friday at a bar where I used to work in Manhattan. Super nice, funny and interesting guy and an amazing writer. He liked the music I played at the bar and through talking about that we got to know each other a little. He's also a musician and runs a music program for kids at New Brown Memorial Baptist Church in Red Hook Brooklyn where he grew up. Proud to say that I turned him on to WFMU! We still exchange emails a couple few times a year...

A friend and former teacher of mine, Angela Harris, currently at the American Bar Foundation, has been researching the history of black farmers for several years.

Just skimmed the DACA opinions. Only J. Sotomayor supported the respondents' equal protection claim.
