Boo/hiss, Joe, re. Mary Poppins. True, Julie Andrew/MP is practically a supporting character in her own movie — but there's a lot to at least admire and appreciate, filmmaking-wise. (The SFX were absolutely state of the art for the time. The songwriting is fantastic — for its purposes. And, D.VD has cheerfully embraced his admittedly awful accent.)

@yfp: Oh, yeah, love "Singin' in the Rain"! @JohnL: Cool! By the way, I adore Dick Van Dyke, think he's the greatest. Not especially in MP. @Gord: Just didn't do it for me, I'm afraid. Felt stilted. Grumpy dad transformation in "SOM" much more convincing. @queems: Love 'em both! Fred's grace, Gene's athleticism.

A few months ago my wife mentioned Harryhausen and couldn't believe I had never heard of him. So we watched Jason and the Argonauts, with its crazy skeleton fight at the end! Very educational. (Then this inspired us to watch Pasolini's "Medea", but that's another story)

Joe McG:

@RachelBR: It's a little hard to explain, but one thing was the look of it. It felt so airless to me, so closed in, esp. after "SOM." I didn't get the character of MP (I've never read the books)...she seemed a little robotic. In "SOM," Maria is busting out with feelings about life and that was so infectious. The songs were OK, but the songs is "SOM" are so much better. I think if I'd seen MP first, I might have liked it more.

I’d like to know what British ppl think of Mary poppins. It’s definitely simplistic. But also I think it’s a kids movie, and sound of music is not. I also like that song that dick van dyke sings at the end about “you’ve got to grind grind grind at that grindstone/while childhood slips like sand through a sieve.” Feel like I appreciate the movie as a parent. It makes some observations that ring true!

Handy Haversack:

@TDK: A foundational band for young Handy H! Have not seen them since high school, I think. There was (and might still be; I have abandoned the platform) footage from their playing Reading on Youtube that was absolutely killer.

Saw them three times, I think, in HS? Blisteringly great shows.

Handy, reporter Kim Sabido's dispatch from The Battle of the Beanfield remains a real 1980s lightbulb moment for me. Worth seeking out if you can find it online.

Handy: even though it's not originally a New Orleans song (like "House of the Rising Sun"), it's become one of the local standards because King Oliver and Satchmo made it part of their repertoire.
