Haven't lived in NYC since 2017, but I remember Mamoun's shawarma being just $6.50 right before I left. I think it was $5.50 for falafel? Anyway incredibly cheap for NYC and especially for the Village. Ike: there is/was even a Mamoun's in New Haven.

@ami ad: I'm (possibly mis-) remembering a time when you could get a sandwich at Mamoun's for $1.25 and a Coke for $.75 and I think there was no tax so you'd be out the door for two bucks. This is late 70s/early 80s. The only other way you could eat lunch for two bucks (as far as I know) was at one of those dirty-water hot dog carts, which has never been my thing.

Always busy, so the falafel was always fresh. Nowadays, Taim, with two locations, is very good. Also agreed that Bay Ridge is a good place for falafel!

@Glorious: One year I made the trip with my full-size upright bass. When I bought my ticket and boarded, the Amtrak officials assured me it was fine. Then halfway through Indiana, a different conductor told me "You can't be on this train with that thing". I didn't know what they were going to do - put me off the train in Portage IN to fend for myself? Anyhow another conductor came along and they played "good conductor/bad conductor" for a while until we found a solution - bass went to the cargo area, "at my own risk". We got there fine. But I'll never take a big instrument on the train again!
