Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:17pm
doctorjazz:

Hi UM!
The 45 rpm reissues are an audiophile idea-the same LP is spread over 2 discs, which should result in better sound. Particularly, bass hasdifficulty squeezing into those little grooves, faster speed lets the same signal be able to be spread out in the groove. Ambience, and all the other audiophile verities should also be improved. I have some 45 reissues. (They can still be gotten at places like Acoustic Sounds, but they sell for $50+ (Coltrane's Blue Trane is $100)
  12:18pm

78s are hard to find in decent shape. There was no tape. There was mostly no stereo. But, they were "direct-to-disc", and there is a sound benefit to less layers of manipulation. They definitely sound better, in good shape, than the LP versions of the same recording (Phil Schapp used to feature them on his jazz shows)
