all those utopias and rosy futures are usually missing politics, celebrities (except for the one person who makes the all-life-changing discovery that leads to the utopia), the financials that pay for the utopian vision and where they come from, and, other than the small group that are focused on in the book/film/art how everyone feels about the changes. dystopias however have all those things (maybe not how everyone feels).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:33am
Handy Haversack:

rich, a couple of books I have read in the past couple of years that seemed to do a good job trying to factor all of those in are /Amatka/, by Karin Tidbeck, and /The City in the Middle of the Night/, by Charlie Jane Anders.

Also: that was an excellent Cardinal Richelieu song!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38am
mariano:

In the early 2000s I went on a real kick with this English writer named Jim Crace. One of his I've been meaning to read but haven't gotten to yet is "The Pesthouse," about a post-apocalyptic US. www.goodreads.com...
  1:43am

Cool, will check those writers out. The last dystopian novel I read was around 5 years ago and it coincidentally took place after a global flu pandemic...Emily St. John Mandel's Station Eleven.

Kate and I both love that book, Sally. We have not revisited it in this year of WTF!!??!!, but I plan to do so at some point.

  1:52am
rich:

i haven't read any of the books you've mentioned. my favorite dystopia is john brunner’s stand on zanzibar. utopias are difficult. i think to be a successful utopia the author has to concentrate on a limited number of characters. film has a real problem with utopia, no explosions, psychopaths, sociopaths, every utopia has to have an underlying dystopia for hollywood
  1:55am
Sally:

utopia>>dystopia>>utopia haha it's a cycle or both at the same time...digging this Stereo Total, sort of sounds like the Pandoras!
  1:57am
Sally:

Oh wait, if this is Stereo Total, then I meant the song before.

Oh, hell yeah -- /Stand on Zanzibar/ is absolutely world class! I can see my copy from where I'm sitting. So good.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00am
Handy Haversack:

So Tidbeck's /Amatka/ does some really hard work at looking at what a real revolution might look like and tries to get through the Singularity of the world after to talk about what might come. There's a lot of metaphor, obviously, but it does the best job I can think of recently of trying to think through both the work of revolution and how to conceive the inconceivable change that might follow.
  2:02am
Sally:

I tried reading Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Sower" a couple of years and it was too brutal...too close to reality in some ways.

I like that book a lot, Sally, but, yeah, 100 percent -- it's really hard. Too much right around the corner.
  2:07am
Sally:

Yeah Rich, I can't think of any really exciting utopian films...hmmm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:07am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

One problem with Utopia is no conflict makes a less interesting Story. Huxley wrote both Brave New World - & Island... but though he was an immensely important thinker & Essayist (Doors of Perception for one) - not a few say Orwell the Journalist was a better Writer in the literary storyteller sense.
  2:08am
Sally:

What about 2001: A Space Odyssey, does that count as utopian? I love that one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hm. Teleological in the sense of our evolution being guided for purpose - but we don't know what happens to us after the Starchild appears !

  2:11am
rich:

only if you are keir dullea and avoid 2010: the year we made contact
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12am
Handy Haversack:

I think a lot of utopian fiction has tended toward the totalitarian -- dystopias disguised by telling the dominant culture it's right about things. It's not that utopia is boring, it's that it's hard to conceive and picture when you're conditioned by empire and global madness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...Hawking suggested we might think twice about extraterrestrial contact ! Rarely goes well for the less advanced...
  2:13am

that was a nice segue rich
  2:16am
rich:

i think utopias work better in fantasy john crowley’s little, big always struck me as utopian but its eventual utopia only affects a small group of people
  2:16am
rich:

thanks tom
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:16am
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Maybe the problem is precisely that Utopia is 'boring'. A major problem now with Denialism is humans are the ape that needs Story - even if we know it to be counterfactual - as long as our needs are served ! Why Liberals arguing Facts need to read Jung to understand our Symbolic life...
  2:17am
Sally:

Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer had that same sort of dystopian/utopian ending where it's left hanging what the new life will be after the end. No aliens in that one...just a couple of humans and animals, if I remember correctly.

Aside from the CIA (or whomever) just studying f*cking people's minds with bad trips & mind control. I long maintained Manson was older than hippies & a jailbird : Theirs ! Not ours !! & there's speculation they might have passed him thru MK-Ultra...

despite the half hour glitch at the beginning of the show we made it through. thank you sally and tamar for casting out the demons and cursing for me. thank you scott for steering us through rough waters. thank you darren for ably taking us through calmer waters. thank you everyone else for listening and sticking around. utopia doesn't have to be boring look at wfmu. sure we could use more hours in a week so more djs could program but i don't believe utopia means everything is perfect or is a synonym for boring. dystopias can be boring too. have a good week and enjoy as much of it as you can.

rich, I think I drifted off around 2:30 -- but not from lack of enjoyment! Great show -- thanks!
