good evening
Avatar 9:04pm DktrFaustus:

Good evening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Ike:

This opening track reminds me of Bruce Nauman's awesome "The End of the World" at PS1 which made use of Lloyd Maines' steel pedal.

I watched Taj Mahal play this seemingly simple song. It’s a greta pickin’ song.

Well we're still hanging out here on Haight Street in 2020. Shopping locally. Speaking of, show Amoeba Records some love if you people can/ think of it!
Avatar 9:46pm slugluv1313:

@ RRN63 -- ugh, same here in *lovely* Hoboken -- YES, the music is undeniably idyllic :)
btw -- i think i FINALLY saw the Comet! not last Friday, but Friday before -- walking West, towards home -- saw a kinda off-white streak moving slowly North to South in the sun-setting evening sky
Avatar 9:46pm DktrFaustus:

Definitely, and the many chef's pop-ups.

SY at the Bowery Ballroom sounds like a dream
  10:09pm nardo:

nice to hear TNV too (here in Cbus).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm mariano:

Hmm... trying to remember if I was at this SY show or not.
Avatar 10:10pm John Purcell:

My first SY show was in NYC but at Webster Hall. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm Chop Scott:

Enjoying the program tonight JJ & skeleton Scott W.--Thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm chris_in_space:

Yeah this SY slaps deep
Avatar 10:14pm slugluv1313:

hah! Karenology :)
(weird, ALL the people i know who are named "Karen" are the most UN-"Karen" types you will ever meet!)
most definitely was not at this show -- was still really reeling from 9/11 . . . went to some events though, which helped immensely
Avatar 10:15pm DktrFaustus:

Didn't notice that show was so soon after
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm mariano:

slugluv: Same with the Karens I know. One of them is my aunt, the other is my mail carrier, both of them amazingly sweet. And you're right - I must've seen SY the year before or after, I was pretty reclusive for the first month or two after 9/11.
Avatar 10:18pm DktrFaustus:

Makes sense
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm ParUbi:

Hello Jesse, hi everybody
Avatar 10:25pm northguineahills:

In NYC, I don't believe it achieved the rhythms of 'normal' until after Halloween.
Avatar 10:25pm DktrFaustus:

Ahoy
Avatar 10:26pm DktrFaustus:

I wound up back in NY a year later
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Richy4619:

Cheers to the good, sweet Karens out there enduring this shitty moment with humor + humility
Avatar 10:26pm DktrFaustus:

Poor Karens!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm Richy4619:

And cheers to all mail carriers !!!
Avatar 10:31pm slugluv1313:

@ mariano -- one of the coolest people i know is named Karen! incredible painter, artist, photographer, all around spectacular human :)
& yeah, i remember a DJ friend held an event in a film studio-type place in Brooklyn (i think it was called The Family?) -- deep reggae dub, roots music, etc. -- i think there was food too (from incredibly generous Rasta cooks, restaurants) . . . anyway, it was really really nice to be out with friends, like-minded people . . . and had just started volunteering with World Music Institute, so being at those shows was equally "healing"
Avatar 10:34pm slugluv1313:

i think the first Sonic Youth show i saw was at Folk City? early 80s, "Music for Dozens" night, iirc -- Kim Gordon was still taping her glasses together
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Chop Scott:

My Mother is named Karen. She was appalled when I related the current use.
Avatar 10:35pm slugluv1313:

@ Chop Scott -- oh no!
Avatar 10:35pm DktrFaustus:

First for me was Turin Italy, 1990.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm jj.:

@slugluv1313 that music for dozens show would've been put on by WFMU DJ ira the k.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm jj.:

the main karen i know is someone i also associate with sonic youth + is definitely high on the list of most un-karens to ever karen.
Avatar 10:36pm slugluv1313:

WOW Jesse! i went to a buncha those shows
Avatar 10:38pm northguineahills:

For me, I first saw SY in Atlanta, GA in 1996...
Avatar 10:39pm northguineahills:

in NYC, I only saw SY once, but I saw the members of SY in solo and side projects almost a dozen times while there....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40pm Richy4619:

i slung online merch for SY . kung Fu nation = ))
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm mariano:

ngh: Yeah same here, lots of solo/side stuff, one of the joys of NYC life. Last time it happened by surprise, must've been around 2012. Was riding my bike around the Village on a Sat night, went past St. Mark's in the Bowery and heard this gorgeous noise. It was close to the end of the show so they just let me in, was Kim Gordon and some guy making noise with guitars. '96 would've been the Washing Machine tour, caught that one at the Warfield in SF. Amazing show.
Avatar 10:50pm northguineahills:

Oh, yeah, I saw SY in Central Park twice as well.

kalimbas and mbiras, oh my!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Richy4619:

mariano, perhaps that was Bill Nace of their duo Body/Head?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53pm Richy4619:

they played my art gallery once! I told Kim not to lean her guitar case on my friend's paintings and she gave me the death stare lol
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm Richy4619:

I *asked* Kim, rather! sheesh. I'm shushhing up now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm mariano:

Richy: Might well have been Body/Head, I'm not very familiar with them.
Avatar 11:02pm northguineahills:

I was at a Merzbow show, and was wondering who that fit woman was in front of me. It was Kim.

Thurston and Lee always were good humored to me. Kim was always stand-offish. I can understand w/ the fan bois and in rock circles, the misogyny.....
Avatar 11:03pm DktrFaustus:

I was greeted with that stare too :-)
Avatar 11:04pm slugluv1313:

Kim RULES that Stare!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:06pm mariano:

Yeah, the few times I've been in the vicinity of Kim Gordon she exuded a don't-fuck-with-me vibe. Steve Shelley's suuuper nice, I spoke with him for a while once.
Avatar 11:06pm northguineahills:

Jim O'Rourke was sleeping at their SY Murrray St studio on 9/11. He said he woke up w/ the first hit and saw and engine of one of the planes down the block.
Avatar 11:06pm slugluv1313:

damn, i missed Merzbow last time he swooped through NYC :(
Avatar 11:07pm DktrFaustus:

Steve brought my friend and I a bowl of fruit after the show because the restaurants were closed.
Avatar 11:08pm northguineahills:

@slugluv1313: I saw him 3 times. The aforementioned show was at the Swiss Inst, all of SY was there, Arto Lindsey, and David Byrne. (and more)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm chris_in_space:

Yeah @Scott Williams—the heartbeat of a station!
Avatar 11:11pm slugluv1313:

somewhere i have that Italian Sonic Youth book from the 90s -- to paraphrase Bob Bert in his review, "worth it for the photo of Thurston selling ChipWich on the street" . . . near Columbus Circle, iirc -- where i worked in the early 80s! still wonder if i walked by him without realizing it
Avatar 11:15pm DktrFaustus:

Wow, I found the photo. It's true.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Richy4619:

Steve Shelley is my true love !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm mariano:

DktrF: Aww, what a mensch! An ex of mine I'm really good friends with was part of the NYC poetry scene with the guy she ended up marrying, ended up in the same circle as Thurston. She once gave him some weed that I'd given her and he wrote her an email complimenting her on it. He wrote something like "Your husband smoke any of that kill?" "That kill," hah! Because that's exactly how he would say that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm mariano:

*DKtrF: I mean "Aww" in reference to @11:07.
Avatar 11:17pm DktrFaustus:

:-)
Avatar 11:18pm slugluv1313:

@ ngh -- damn! *jealous* -- have never seen him
(and yeah, i totally adore his animal liberation stuff too -- those birds!)
Avatar 11:19pm slugluv1313:

@ DktrFaustus -- cool!

It is often the small kindnesses that one remembers.

Avatar 11:22pm DktrFaustus:

Ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm mariano:

Wow, what a beanpole!
Avatar 11:25pm northguineahills:

@Slugluv: The odd thing, is I saw Merzbow also at the Japanese Cultural Institute, so, that makes 2 cultural institutes I saw him at (the other show was Tonic).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25pm chris_in_space:

This show tonight. I mean... it's rockin' my little scene.
Avatar 11:31pm slugluv1313:

@ngh -- DAMN! way cool -- i had to look it up, he was at KnockDown Center in Queens, December 2018 (and once again, i found out AFTER it happened, ugh!)
Swag For Life Member 11:32pm zzz:

  11:48pm east hollywood:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm jj.:

RANA were sort of associated with the ween/new hope scene, fair bit of crossover. scott played in one of aaron's solo bands, etc.
Avatar 11:50pm slugluv1313:

awwww WEEN!!!!!
my dear little cat BAD BRAIN loved them
Avatar 11:52pm northguineahills:
