Familiar & forgotten gems from 50-plus years of music on the darker side, shoegaze, synthpop, goth, psychedelia, darkwave, with unapologetic detours into 70s pop. In a dark night of the soul, it's always 3 o'clock in the morning.

- when you have the physical resources: go to protest, to meetings, join a group and hand out flyers, posters
- when you have the money: donate
- when you have time: help with planning and organization, like giving a hand to build a website, manage social media accounts, provide research to orgs
We can all play a part, nothing is too small

I miss that band. I used to see them every year in NYC in the like 2007-2012 time. But they said visas for touring in the States had become too expensive.
I saw them three times in high school in Atlanta -- still the same people doing merch sales!
Kate's thinking of covering their "Here Comes the War."

To begin to understand see, for example, Frank Zimring's When Police Kill. It is not a polemic, though Zimring does propose suggestions. It's not interested in ideological sparring. It's a cold-eyed study, with all of the strengths and drawbacks such work entails. It will make many readers "uncomfortable," which seems in recent years to have become an overdetermined adjective.

If we don't have Equal Justice - the enterprise fails. It is not one bit less than this - as James Baldwin made explicit & clear.
& you know what befalls the most vulnerable will expand to reach us all : the power of corruption will recognize no barriers or limits to its ambition of itself. Be warned.

Donovan has come under a lot of derision over the decades - yet I like everything he's done.
What's more - for 1966 that was ahead of the curve. He was not concerned about Genre whatsoever - but only the countercultural mission - & was a pioneer in this. A psychedelicised & savvy soul.
coelacanth∅:
- i especially like that last part!

But seriously, confronting family is HARD. I am working on both my employer and the org. I do most of my volunteering for and pressing hard to get both to commit to real change and confront their privilege and complicity -- and it's easier to do that than to think of dealing with my family!
Which, of course, means I have to do it. Dang it.

- anymore than distancing & masks.
It's not about comfort - or the lack of it.
It's about responsibility to what is reality & must be dealt with.
Cause it won't get more comfortable if we don't.
In fact - the discomfort is probably exactly where we need to start.

I do think, though, that we need to be careful about the rhetorical ploys we adopt. For example, the suggestion to confront the complicity of others has a recent historical echo, namely, GW Bush's "Either you are with us, or you are with the terrorists." Those of us with strong leftist sensibilities did not like his attempt to paint us into corners. If on principle we didn't like it then, then we shouldn't like it now, even if in the moment it works in our favor.
Julie:
coelacanth∅:
- but i am thinking about sending her a link to a video of the premeditated, cold-blooded murder by 3-4 military-geared cops of a homeless man in new mexico.
not sure what will become of that. she's 85 and not well.
