Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

WFMU's Give the Drummer Radio and Hinky Dinky Time denounce explicit and implicit racism. We condemn the culture of white supremacy, which enables the brutalization of black people and other communities of color. We support Black Lives Matter and the movement it stands for. |

My grandpa used to spot celebrities in Manhattan. He saw Richard Dreyfuss in an elevator at his office the week after he won the Oscar. He ran across the street to talk to Reggie Jackson. I was with him when he saw Craig T. Nelson and yelled out "Hey Coach".

The parents of my best friend in high school were theater educators. In 1984 I attended Olympic Arts Festival events in LA, mostly shows at UCLA, with my friend's dad. Before one in Royce Hall he glimpsed Peter Falk in the audience. He had purchased one of Falk's paintings years before, and he used that as an opportunity to approach him and introduce me. Later he took me backstage to meet the lead in one of the shows, an Italian actor with Piccolo Teatro di Milano, of whom my buddy's dad had a photograph in his wallet from a very early production of the same PTdM show. Met him, too. We also saw Jon Voigt strolling across campus.

I said hi to Mickey Rooney at Santa Anita. My paternal grandfather owned racing horses. Somewhere I have a set of jockey's silks. Wore them once to school for Halloween, probably fourth grade?
