Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

@dan
The parents of my best friend in high school were theater educators. In 1984 I attended Olympic Arts Festival events in LA, mostly shows at UCLA, with my friend's dad. Before one in Royce Hall he glimpsed Peter Falk in the audience. He had purchased one of Falk's paintings years before, and he used that as an opportunity to approach him and introduce me. Later he took me backstage to meet the lead in one of the shows, an Italian actor with Piccolo Teatro di Milano, of whom my buddy's dad had a photograph in his wallet from a very early production of the same PTdM show. Met him, too. We also saw Jon Voigt strolling across campus.

Yeah, Falk was sui generis. I have a hard time discerning thespian skills on film--it's usually just mugging for the camera--but it's clear even to me, and never having seen him tread the boards, that Falk knew how to act.

Since this is radio themed and you are playing lots of OLD stuff, FM got its' start in the early 40's mostly, but the band was from 42 to 50 MHZ. Receivers were built and sold, but in 1945 the band was changed to 88 to 108 and the old radios were obsolete. That's a RADIO RIPOFF fer sure.

Sorry, @Artie, it appears they have ruined "heel turn," which first appeared in the late 19th C., but beginning in 1990 "professional" wrestling adopted it: "An instance of a wrestler who has been cast as a hero undergoing a character shift and adopting the persona of a villain, typically in a sudden, shocking move. Later, in extended use: any instance of a sudden shift from hero to villain."

Pie-hole is crazy! Earliest mention in OED, 1737, reads, "A hole made in cloth or leather for the passage of a lace or cord; an eyelet." This is due to their looking like the holes in a pie crust from which steam escapes. Steven King picked it up in 1983, "Then shut your pie-hole." I've always taken that to refer to the hole in which one inserts pie, a nice little inversion of the original meaning!

I'm not confident that OED always or even deliberately notes the earliest known occurrences.
