	1:28pm Dean: Small clap clap clap here, yes, but yesterday after Irene's show I played a comp of Duck Baker performances with various artists. Two tracks featured Baker w/ John Zorn and Cyro Baptista, live at Knitting Factory. At the end of one of the tracks, an overenthusiastic audience member yelled, "YEAAAHHHHH! FUCK, YEAH!" I bet Evans never heard that. (Another track, in studio with Derek Bailey, ends with Bailey sneezing twice.)

	🥁 1:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63: ' LaFaro died [age 25] in an automobile accident on July 6, 1961 in Flint, New York on U.S. Route 20 between Geneva and Canandaigua, four days after accompanying Stan Getz at the Newport Jazz Festival. According to Paul Motian, the death of Lafaro left Bill Evans "numb with grief", "in a state of shock", and "like a ghost". Obsessively he played "I Loves You Porgy", a song which had become synonymous with him and LaFaro. Evans stopped performing for several months. '

	2:00pm Dean: Given that, RRN63, the earliest reference I can find in newspapers to LaFaro postmortem is a brief review by Charles Hanna in the Aug. 13, 1961, Minneapolis Sunday Tribune of Explorations. It reads in full: "At the moment if I could have the jazz piano skills of whomever I wanted, I would want to have those of Bill Evans. This recording must be the best thing he has done. An infrequent recorder, Evans enhances his efforts with their scarcity. At 31, Evans is one of jazzdom's most brilliant performers. Scott LaFaro on bass and drummer Paul Motian fill out the trio. Superb recording." Not a word about LaFaro's passing. I'd guess Hanna had no idea.

	2:23pm Listener Gregory: Evans's accompaniment is so brilliant that I often wish that he had done it more often, as well as played in small groups more in his last decades.

	2:26pm Dean: For dates akin to Bennett/Evans, check out the albums Alan Broadbent made with Irene Kral. Similar musical perfection, similar introspection and melancholy.

The latter had the band recording its live set in a studio, and it really sounds lifeless, as if some magic ingredient is missing. An actual live set with imperfect sound would have been better.
	2:31pm Listener Gregory: Herr Wolfgang, are you talking about Some Other Time? It's from the Leonard Bernstein Musical "On The Town." At the end of their one day on shore leave in NYC, sailors have to say goodbye to the girls they have met, and they sing this song.

Have a rewatch of some Gene Kelly (and Fred Astaire) movies on my list as soon as possible ... 	11:09am Listener Gregory: Almost through the entire archive, but one correction. "Flamenco Sketches" by Frank Minion seems to be "All Blues." It seems to be listed on the album (i.e., discogs) as "Flamenco Sketeches (All Blues)," which is strange, as these are two very different songs from Kind of Blue.
	11:20am Listener Gregory: Further research shows that the album lists the as Flamenco Sketches, so it seems that discogs added the parenthetical (All Blues) as a correction.

It's a super extendo-birthday party for the great pianist Bill Evans! On sonic display will be many of his masterful trio performances along with a multitude of other killer sessions. Joining the fun will be jazz writer and NY Times editor Peter Keepnews. (He's the son of Riverside Records legend Orrin Keepnews, who promoted and produced Evans for many years). He’ll talk about the music and spin a few yarns, as well as DJ a couple of sets. Come on in the Club and plan to stay for a while!

Two tracks featured Baker w/ John Zorn and Cyro Baptista, live at Knitting Factory. At the end of one of the tracks, an overenthusiastic audience member yelled, "YEAAAHHHHH! FUCK, YEAH!" It reads in full: "At the moment if I could have the jazz piano skills of whomever I wanted, I would want to have those of Bill Evans. This recording must be the best thing he has done. An infrequent recorder, Evans enhances his efforts with their scarcity. At 31, Evans is one of jazzdom's most brilliant performers. Scott LaFaro on bass and drummer Paul Motian fill out the trio. Superb recording." Not a word about LaFaro's passing. I'd guess Hanna had no idea.

It seems to be listed on the album (i.e., discogs) as "Flamenco Sketeches (All Blues)," which is strange, as these are two very different songs from Kind of Blue.
