Really interesting. Colombian cumbia obviously influenced by chicha. Discussing where cumbia's really from with Colombians and Pervians is like discussing where salsa is really from with Puerto Ricans and Cubans, can lead to some very heated arguments (and dance-offs).
  12:30am
$mall ¢hange:

yeah def different styles. not an expert but have a lil stack now. big shout to Javier / Sonido Martines, check the archives for his sets
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38am
mariano:

I'll do that, thanks $mall ¢hange. I'm not very knowledgeable about it either, I normally associate Colombian cumbia with a slower tempo and bassier sound. It was huge in Honduras when I was a kid. There's a Colombian cumbia called "Se Va el Caimán" that everybody in Latin America knows, and which over the years has accumulated dozens if not hundreds of obscene verses. Usually sung towards the end of a party when everyone's getting good and hammered.

Damn Nick Name is off again this week

@ mariano -- oh hell yeah!
have had these *discussions* with know-it-all "expert" types -- who are NOT Cuban or Colombian or Peruvian or Puerto Rican :(
when my Mom was still alive, i was playing a Dominican Merengue cassette in the car while driving her to the supermarket -- she got a kick of how some of the tunes reminded her of Polka music :)
  12:42am
BEAVO:

I love a good Dominican Merengue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:46am
mariano:

Oh yeah, slugluv, some of that Latin American music was influenced by some seemingly unlikely things, like with some Mexican genres and their curiously Alpine sound.
Avatar 12:47am

ahhh a drunken "Se Va el Caimán" sing-a-long via zoom :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51am

Hey $¢, Was it you who played that Congolese mambo song last week? Gorgeous, haunting song.

Here's a version of "Se Va el Caimán" for later or to watch the drunk guys dancing to Nickel and Dime (some of the verses in this one are scandalously dirty, might try to whip up some subtitles): www.youtube.com...

@ mariano -- yes, absolutely -- i gotta fact-check myself, but i think there was German colonization (ugh) in the Dominican Republic
  12:53am
$mall ¢hange:

ah nice will check later!
  12:54am
$mall ¢hange:

Orchestre OK Jazz right Mariano? yeah that whole comp is dope. I will play more off it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:01am
mariano:

I think that's the one, $¢: A Moins Que Namikosa. Minor key, really haunting harmonized backup vocals.

slugluv: And Mexico had an Austrian emperor however briefly. I imagine also the many German settlers in Texas influenced northern Mexican music. Didn't know that about the DR though, interesting.

BH:

in the alternate non-Covid universe, the Dem convention was last month and the entire Olympics happened in-between the conventions. Which might sound a lot better than "both conventions are TV productions that air on back to back weeks"
  1:19am
joe:

the fact that Clinton hid behind those like Stokely to avoid conflict in Vietnam. damn
  1:20am
Lames:

Thank you. True fire from Dr Joseph. Cheato has to go sure, but after we need to make an anti-racist party that stands up for working class people, one that has no place for scum like BC.
  1:21am
$mall ¢hange:

yeah Joe that stands out for me too. crazy. neoliberals are backstabbers all the way
  1:27am
BH:

looking at the results, Perelman is probably gonna finish around the same vote total as Canova in 2016 (Canova finished at 21907, Perelman is at 21,620 votes).. the big difference is that Wasserman Schultz won almost 29k votes in 2016 and W-S's approaching 56k votes this time around.

So, I guess some voters decided to vote by mail in the August primary just to get used to it before November.
  1:27am
$mall ¢hange:

yeah its a shame. as she mentions, DWS is a complete tool
  1:32am

DWS was allegedly shoving a 16 yo Perelman volunteer the other day: really horrid.

BH:

The congressional primaries during the whole Covid thing have had some interesting races. On one hand, incumbents should be benefiting a little if the races rely a little more on name recognition than campaigning, but on the other hand, the House isn't in the mood to put 400+ oldish people in the same vicinity too often right now and some incumbents have lost because they were invisible (or seemed that way)

and this is the cycle before redistricting where some incumbents are gonna intentionally/accidentally end up in worse districts.
  1:46am
$mall ¢hange:

btw WFMU has compiled a list of orgs and ways to get involved, link here:

the Florida primary yesterday also saw the 'history' of the first person to win a primary after being banned from Twitter. What an amazing internet world we ended up in.
  1:54am
BH:

same Florida Republican is probably the also first to win a primary after being banned from using Uber/Lyft.

also the first... that happens when you type it out and decide to start moving words and then you don't actually proofread

that is a freakin awesome list, $mall ¢hange -- THANK YOU!!!
i have a buncha food, clothing, etc. i gotta donate
(i was in touch with Food Not Bombs in JC, but never heard back from them)
Chilis on Wheels does amazing work too, 10 chapters so far:
www.chilisonwheels.org...
Domestic Violence organizations/shelters could use help, donations, too . . . same for local food pantries, animal rescue groups, etc.
  2:00am
$mall ¢hange:

Lara Loomer. special one. for sure
  2:12am
BH:

Marjorie Taylor Greene in GA is almost certainly getting elected on the same day that Loomer ends up losing by like 25-30.
But I think MTG is more of a "forwarding conspiracies through emails" sort of far right, as opposed to LL who is more into mixing racism, bigotry, and performance art
  2:46am
BH:

Brazil has the second highest official Covid death total in the world. Worldometers has the US at 176k, Brazil at 111k, Mexico 3rd at 58k, and India at 54k. The US and Brazil are really close for deaths per 1m people.

The international coverage feels like it dropped off hard once the non-US places with the most cases became Brazil/Mexico/India as opposed to when it was Italy/Spain/France/UK back in April.

Thank you $¢, amazing music and great interview clips. Huzzahs for the Crew, take care everyone!

MTG right she's the Q-Anon candidate. man that shit is out there. Robbie Martin has done some good podcasts going in on the background. some out there bs
