To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears.
To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool.
To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen.
To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies.
To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.”
Octavia E. Butler, 1998

Paul: not to quibble, but Honduras has the dubious distinction of being the original banana republic, I believe it was O. Henry who coined it. He was laying low down there, one step ahead of the law on an embezzlement charge.

In 2014, I had the opportunity to do some historiographical research on the Banana.
I remember reading “Bananas: How the United Fruit Company Shaped the World“ by Peter Chapman
There are a few more interesting reads on the Banana... However, I go back to something The Head of the History Department told the class -(Paraphrasing) “be mindful what you choose to study because it becomes a part of you in a way” (speaking in the context of American Civil War histories and WWII military histories)
From that speech I took away the message “pursue the good ardently!”
There are higher ideals our nation represents as embodied in Paul Robeson for instance. Peace and love too! It’s not all Banana Republicanism, but that is a part of it.

first comes to mind: "100 years of solitude" and the short story "leaf storm"
as did Vonnegut and Robbins (the latter "does", i hope) and others García Márquez wrote a lot of non-fiction using fictional names.
