I probably have been one of those guilty of underestimating Emerson. an amazing story: Emerson received an athletic scholarship to attend Florida A&M University, but left to joined the United States Air Force during the Korean War in 1952. While stationed in Greenville, Mississippi, he met bandleader Ike Turner, who recruited him into his Kings of Rhythm.
