A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

@Woo: I'm near Noble Square in West Town. Wicker Park, Logan Square, and other "cool" neighborhoods have very few boarded up windows - a couple here and there but most of it came down after the protests. I don't spend a lot of time on the Mag Mile but I believe most of the boards have come down there too, I'm not sure. I do think the news media sensationalizes things like this. I'll take a bike ride this afternoon and have a look around. I'll report back.

A moral question - Not An AMORAL QUESTION...
a spider moved in to our house 3 months ago....
we have named her Bertha (gender unknown)
We have almost no flying insects as Biz is shut down
in Madrid... When I do the midnight recycling , I take an Olive Jar
and capture wee bugs to feed Bertha.
Is That horrible...?????????????????? I think no but I always have a small sad
quam feeling [Is Quam a word??? It is now]... I eat cheese and eggs and dead animals if they appear on a plate and I can kill fish and eat them but I feel sorry for the wee bugs????? Not Catholic guilt.....
No professional psychs need respond.... just the Regular - IR-regular listener!!
appear on the plate..
Ps wee 9 year old Simon tagged/labeled the jar "Bertha's Lunch Box."

@morphe': The word is qualm. And that's a great question. Every summer I plant flowers to attract bees. A few days ago I noticed a HUGE spiderweb that was strung between the flowerpots and a tree about 8 feet away. I've been watching all the bugs that get caught. And yesterday, there was a bee in the web! One of the bees I was trying to attract. So I removed the spider nest - it seemed somehow like this setup was unfair to the bees, a trap. But how about the spider whose web I wrecked? A real moral question. Then I realized - this is actually part of what it means to be human. Making decisions like this. Deciding what is a weed and what is "desirable". In fact, it's like playing God, deciding who lives and who dies. It's quite a burden and I'm sure we don't always get it right! But you have to make decisions like this anyhow, every day - there's no getting around it, if you live in the world. You play God every day. Just try to be a kind and merciful God, I guess ... Well, the web reappeared the next day, actually. Identical location & construction. Spiders are amazing!

We only *recently* got early voting in New York. Why did it take until 2019 to get that passed? Because in 2018 we *organized* and voted out Cuomo's pet Republicans etc. from the state Senate. Then Cuomo had no choice but to pass early voting and other progressive legislation, which he either illicitly hated or didn't care about.

@Yes A few years back our aging cocker spaniel had a torn ACL. Our vet just recommended reduced activity (no jumping up on the couch/bad/using the stairs) for a couple of weeks. The early reduced activity was managed with some slow-the-doggy-down medication. And it really worked!

The vet said he liked this approach because surgery success for this was not great.

@Trouble: If it's old enough, the battery pops out with no tools. Otherwise you need to remove a few screws, you might need a special screwdriver. IMO it's totally worth it to keep older machines going (it's green, for one thing). It's probably out of warranty already so I don't think Apple cares what you do.

Avatar This Is The Modern World with Trouble Hellraiser 2024 Swag For Life Member 11:36am

@Trouble again, depends on the model. really old ones (2012) still had removable batteries, mine(2014!) it's glued in so it's a spit in the eye of right-to-repair people. It can be done by have with a kit from IFixit, but you have to be technologically fearless and a heat gun would help.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am
Trouble:

i had an older mac book that a friend gave me b/c it wasn't holding a charge, and i used it only for music to bring to wfmu, plugging it in while using it. this macbook was a hand me down from my son when he got a new one for college. i don't need a laptop, since we have a desktop, but this show would not be running at present if it wasn't for that hand me down laptop, whose battery is dying faster then it used to.

@Pale Son why not? A lot of computer stuff is easily DIY, even an apple product
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am
