This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

this truly excellent, otherworldly jazz-exotica intersection LP also boasts possibly the finest liner notes in the exotica canon
Avatar 7:05pm
Flash Strap:

The Adventures in Sound series generally has next-level notes (Portrait of Leda is a favorite of mine) but Sorcery! takes the cake
Avatar 7:07pm

giving the drummer some tonight that's for sure

Ohhh I forgot about this Buddy DeFranco record. "Star of Africa"!
Avatar 7:57pm
Flash Strap:

this whole album sounds like this - a whole 10" about romance & stars - then suddenly Star of Africa kicks in - the 2nd meeting between the two gods
Avatar 7:58pm
Flash Strap:

i think Blakey is on Star Eyes, but no Sabu
Avatar 7:58pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: yeah man it's so good
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:00pm
Little Danny:

According to the 80% accurate jazzdisco.org that is indeed Sabu on "Star of Africa." I want it to be true. www.jazzdisco.org...
Avatar 8:01pm
Flash Strap:

my research indicates that Sabu is only on this track, which checks out since you can't hear conga or bongo elsewhere on the album
Avatar 8:01pm
Flash Strap:

could be wrong however, happens every day
Avatar 8:02pm

really wishing i could find a better-sounding version of this record. everything else tonight should be pretty high quality however

Avatar 8:30pm
Flash Strap:

"Oscalypso" first appears on Oscar Pettiford's 1955 album, Vol. 2 - Yusef Lateef has also done it - always incredible to hear & Pettiford's lead bass on this recording is unbelievable
Avatar 8:31pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: insane guitar sound, one of my favorite single guitar performances

I went through a period of being obsessed with all the different versions of "Oscalypso" I could find.
Avatar 8:32pm
Flash Strap:

you probably know more versions than me then! i wonder what i'm missing out on
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 8:34pm

Actually now that I'm on it I think I only know four versions:

Art Blakey, Oscar Pettiford (two different versions), and Curtis Fuller.
Avatar 8:35pm

hiya Coelacanth!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm
Little Danny:

Evan: who popularized these Afro-Jazz/percussion experiments in the '50s? Was it the Sorcery LP? I feel like there musta been a solid selling LP at some point in the '50s precipitating all of the experiments that followed. It was pre-Olatunji, I'm thinking.
Avatar 9:10pm
Flash Strap:

Orgy in Rhythm is a big one, for sure. I know "Message from Kenya" was a bolt from the blue in some ways. It's hard to separate those from the steady Afro-Cuban influence in jazz and nightclub music that was pretty well ongoing by the time Blakey and Sabu met up but they were instrumental in bringing it to a new level. Guy Warren's first record as leader was in 56 so he plays a big role too
Avatar 9:15pm
Flash Strap:

I think by the time Sorcery shows up the whole experiment is in full swing, but 1958 is such a crazy year for music like that, I mean it's just bursting
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:17pm
Little Danny:

Right, right, right, totally forgot about Guy Warren.
You're right, the Orgy in Rhythm LPs were big-sellers, comparatively.

Similar commercial concept and just a step after those Afro-Cuban jazz suites by Machito, Chico O'Farrill, and Jack Costanzo - 10" LPs on Clef/Norgran.

Definitely tie-ins with space-age hi-fi percussion expositions, too, though not gimmicky.
Avatar 9:18pm
Flash Strap:

another great Blakey-Sabu joint, Cu-Bop has a lot of great stuff on it! after this Sabu got into heroin and may have managed a Baltimore strip joint at one point – when he returns it's with Jazz Espagnole which does really well but he's not the actual bandleader, so he has to assemble a new band to support himself. Next we'll hear that band, Sabú Y Sus Pachangueros. Towards the end we'll hear Espagnole
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
chresti:

We used to mini-golf at a somewhat seedy place on Hollywood Blvd, when I first moved to LA.
Avatar 9:19pm
Flash Strap:

@LD: definitely yes! Machito is a big transitional figure too
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm
Little Danny:

Man I forgot about this Cu-bop LP too.

Avatar 9:48pm
Flash Strap:

ok this is our final selection of the evening - next week we'll visit Sabu in his new home in Sweden, then probably check out some South-Central American experimental synth & percussion sounds

sadly, had to cut a Tony Bennett track for time. With Sabu, Herbie Mann, and Candido, it almost sounds good to me, a Tony Bennett disliker
