@CC: That was a good question. I guess I'm fortunate that I enjoy so many different and varied genres and can feel my way around many of them, if you forgive my boldness.
Hi Gaylord!
Aww, I tuned in too late to hear Allen Toussaint, who's one of my faves. Have you ever heard his story about "Southern Nights" that was on the release from his Joe's Pub appearances? He's all that AND a great storyteller. <3
8:27pm
phat:
Music of my Mind is not his only masterpiece, but it probably is his greatest masterpiece. Holy hell is it good.
@Wendy del Formaggio: Hi! And I don't think I know the story you refer to. But I did attend a couple of his shows during his Joe's Pub residency. Yes, he's quite the raconteur. <3
@Gaylord: I SO wanted to go to those shows, but I was sick that week. Waaaah. Anyway, you can relive it on this album, and the track I mentioned is the final one on the album. Highly recommended. www.discogs.com...
Well of course, Wendy. Piecrust is a subject unto itself, and needs to be talked about from both a scholarly perspective and also a place of pure ardor and lust.
Gaylord- I second Wendy's recommendation of that CD and especially the Southern Nights monologue. Listening to it shortly after Toussaint's death made me sob like a snot-caked baby.
@Matt Fiveash: I will snap it up post haste. Whenever he'd show up in front of whatever venue hosted the Ponderosa Stomp in his Jag to chew the rag with whomever was hanging out, we realized what it feels like to be granted an audience with royalty.
@Snayle, I guess we haven't been introduced. My name should say it all. :-)
The answer to your question: pretty much everything. I was a cheesemonger for 20+ years.
Yeah... it's almost time to get rid of the Hip Huggers and the short shorts
And the halterTops and the tube tops and going back to dressing warmly for fall?!?...:)
Listening to the show during dinner, only now seeing the comments. As such it's way after the fact, but one of my lasting memories of those Allen Toussaint Joe's Pub shows is hearing his stately pronunciation of "Devo."
8:56pm
phat:
Oftentimes I think pop music from outside the US is better than here. I'm sure that's some sort of bias. And yet...
Kelly, I love food in general, oh yes. (Clay Pigeon convinced me to do a weekly food segment on Wake & Bake.) And daaaaang. Beef Bourguignon... Mmm... I recently watched the old Julia Child episode about that. Do you love her? I do.
hi chresti! i got home a few hours ago. the desert to the 12-day meal was a flat tire.
i'll be back on tuesday to load up 2 storage pods (etc) then i'm unemployed by sunday.
fun.
hi Franco!
@Franco: Aww hell, I dunno. I bought it at the farm stand. So, it was picked that day, either in SE VT or across the river in NH (I can't remember where I got it). It was yellow! Does that help?
@Franco: I dunno. That picture is from over a month ago. I can't remember such details. I also wasn't looking for them.
9:06pm
phat:
@Gaylord Fields thank you for this Afro Drum Ensemble. This is the sound of a spot being hit.
9:07pm
Dean:
And I miss her. She was, first and foremost, a human being, and a lovely, smart, funny one at that. But she also knew how to write and talk about food, which is a *scarce* talent.
@coel: Our corn is still being harvested, but we had a frost the last two nights, so I don't know how that will affect things. Probably depends on the elevation of the specific farm.
Dean, we haven't talked since our world has gone to hell! I usta see Julia at this bakery in Santa Barbara holding forth over soft boiled eggs on a regular basis,
I'm having an out of body experience. THIS SHOW IS SENDING ME TO ORGASMIC BLISS. Is anyone with me? I mean what the fuck have I been doing on Sunday nights? Now it's this!
@Gaylord Fields I was just thinking that. I could probably get them in a room together, should that be possible sometime soon. I know one of them would be game...
@Franco... The only thing I might be able to sample tonight in place of my home made Beef Bourg is that Goat Curry! Garlic Naan and Red Stripe.... that's the perfect addition.
Kelly, you may have to ask other people. I honestly don't know how you've resisted my ample charms all these years.
9:17pm
Andres:
Evening Gaylord and peoples! Like Jeff I also was loving the show whilst walking dog. I did try to come up with a comment about the Icicle Works sharing part of a song title with Allen Toussaint but that went nowhere. Was a better choice to be present with the walk and the beautiful music. And the dog.
9:18pm
CC:
Dean... I bet you just have an overactive imagination???...:)
9:18pm
phat:
@Gaylord Fields i was just thinking that. The newer one is way more into "instrumental post rock" but idolizes Miles. The older one is just a world class drummer who turned me on to electronic Miles.
I've got four'Stripes in tha' affiggerator. Wendy, I got my first apples of the season this marnin' Crispy and bright Galas. What is the cheese compliment?
From Ed: Luv the Sophia Loren and her duets with Peter Sellers, too. From Melani: Anyone remember that restaurant on W. 12th Street that was a tribute to her?
I was going to roll one, but I'm not smoking till the smoke blows out. My lungs already hurts.
9:24pm
Dean:
After Ira Robbins appeared on Gina's show, I've been digging into old TP issues. Read a review this evening of a Wings show at the Odeon that reminded me of this.

CC:
Karma is like a wheel...Kama Sutra...mmmm...must be like some kind of orgasmic Bliss???...:)
@Franco: Hmm. Galas are very sweet. Go with a skanky blue, or a fresh goat...or a slightly aged one like Monte Enebro. You're in California, right? You could stick with cheddar, especially Fiscalini Bandaged.
When I was 19 years old Ira Robbins butchered my letter to the editor, the proceeded to dump all over the letter he'd completely changed the meaning...of.
@Joe B: But you still love those dissonant "Man Loves a Woman" horns, right?
9:29pm
highway:
Gaylord...thankfully your show is still on...thanks to you I listened to Jeff and his great show...I'll miss him...and Daniel Blumin...another great show I listened to...anyways thank you for knowing it's the great Sophia Lorens' birthday...my favorites are "Goodness Gracious Me"...with Peter Sellers...and of course her classic "Two Women"....Gaylord Fields Forever....I Love You...
I perhaps did mean a slight against Robbins, based on my reading of his commentary. But I credit TP (and Back Door Man and later Flipside and Slash) with introducing me to music and bands back when I was open to such introductions.
Gaylord, one of the things I love about you and your show is the way you set -- and maintain -- the tone. It turns your show from JUST being a place where I can hear fabulous music and genius segues, to a cool spot to hang out that's free from mishegas. What the world needs now is less mishegas. <3
well hopefully my joke was taken as such! i'm not familiar with Ira Robbins in any capacity and couldn't listen to the radio yesterday until the evening.
Aww, Syreeta... I'm only recently beginning to learn about her, and I keep loving what I hear.
9:46pm
Dean:
Nowadays I read Fanfare: roughly 550 pages per each bimonthly issue, no margins, few images, reviews of classical recordings. Folks, give Fanfare some attention, too. You will not be disappointed.
I still have my Trouser Press Guide to New Wave Music ... which is a handy & dandy ref and has been for ___'s ... and btw - this Syreeta is way groovy !
I'm still down a rabbit hole due to trying to reconsider the movie Spirit of the Beehive after being reminded of it by your opening track. I was disturbed and unsettled when I saw it decades ago. Now I have to see it again, try to face what why I was so disturbed.
A perfect night. My daughter made a great dinner, the weather here in Arkansas is perfect, and of course the show has been wonderful accompanied by lots of crickets. Thanks Gaylord.
