His premature Gary Peacock RIP aside, Jack DeJohnette's arrival on Twitter has been a joy to behold.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:06am
DJpeterDE:

I haven't seen it either. Knowing what I do about independent film in the late 70s, my sense is that it's one of a number of films between filmmakers and writers of color -- with the writers bringing an interest in film as a mass media form. But the market at the time wasn't particularly receptive to rough-hewn movies commenting on mainstream tastes, that's the kind of movie that is "rediscovered" later -- if by "rediscovered" you mean "still not very widely seen but the artsy types celebrate it now"
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:07am

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:34am
DJpeterDE:

@LG I do wonder how much the pressure to keep producing affects artist's creativity. (thinking of that dumb Spotify guy.) Byron was with Blue Note, and those days they were putting a lot of pressure on everyone to put out albums with "concepts." I wonder if the Junior Walker album came out of that.

Slight correction on the Stork club dress-code as just announced by Jeff G.: "Shirt", "shoes," as well as "pants" are after all cultural constructs, and can be loosely defined by the wearer. And yes, that means you can come in the buff. Comfort is the Club watchword, after all. Hope to see you then - here's your keycard: wfmu.org...

Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:49am
DJpeterDE:

@doc yeah sure. my point is that record companies in general and blue note in particular pushed that approach. in those days, blue note wanted everybody to do "standards" records. they even pushed James Newton to do standards after all those records with his own compositions, and his response was: if i have to do standards, i'm going to do obscure Ellington and Mingus.
