Knowing what I do about independent film in the late 70s, my sense is that it's one of a number of films between filmmakers and writers of color -- with the writers bringing an interest in film as a mass media form. But the market at the time wasn't particularly receptive to rough-hewn movies commenting on mainstream tastes, that's the kind of movie that is "rediscovered" later -- if by "rediscovered" you mean "still not very widely seen but the artsy types celebrate it now"

Knowing what I do about independent film in the late 70s, my sense is that it's one of a number of films between filmmakers and writers of color -- with the writers bringing an interest in film as a mass media form. But the market at the time wasn't particularly receptive to rough-hewn movies commenting on mainstream tastes, that's the kind of movie that is "rediscovered" later -- if by "rediscovered" you mean "still not very widely seen but the artsy types celebrate it now"
