I'm sniffing and sneezing from allergies. The usual pharma remedies work but I try not to take them unless the symptoms disrupt work, etc. Jungle fever sounds life changing.

Maryinibomb, your Morricone Island sub this week was warmly received. The recent crossings of the streams are a success. It's a good thing.

Hi Dave!
  10:42am
Martinibomb:

@jan if u are white it's considered rude here to even say the word in the context that you just used it in. Most people I know will only say N-word if they need to talk about it.
  10:44am
Martinibomb:

i got new pug here and he's really digging the sounds under64 music - totally listening and tilting his head. not even 9 weeks yet
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am
Jan Turkenburg:

Well, I needed to say it, because it's in the title. Should I have left it with reading the title then?
  10:45am
Martinibomb:

@jan if I read that on air in portland or even played that track they'd have thrown me off
  10:51am
Martinibomb:

@jan yes i wish things were different/better and we didn't have all this dumb racism and words were just words we use for communicating
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am
Jan Turkenburg:

me too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am
Jan Turkenburg:

And I consider this show like a kind of audio museum in which sounds recorded in the past can be heard. If it had be a contemporary hitparade show, I would not have broadcasted a piece with that title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am
Rich in Washington:

It's my hope that when we get better at addressing real life, present day racism, we can look back at artifacts of the past with sober understanding and maybe not have it be so triggering to folks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am
Rich in Washington:

Yes. A museum. I like that. We don't purge museums of problematic images. They're there for a reason, y'know?
  10:58am
Martinibomb:

I hope so.. I mean there is a gigantic grand canyon of a difference between using a slur directed at someone and using it in the context of talking about it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am
Lizardner Dave 2:

I'm a white guy so it's not up to me to be offended or not by the use of certain words but I completely get having them in a historical context (we haven't edited them out of Mark Twain yet, for instance) but it's a very tricky thing to navigate in the US.

Hi spodiodi!
  Swag For Life Member 11:13am
WR:

Glad the N- titled tune brought up some discussion. Don't have to erase the world's racist past but should acknowledge when presenting the artifacts. Need to put it in context, not just assume. Even with recordings like the Ada Jones from earlier in the show where the lyrics and her performance made use of cliché and stereotypes about Jews for comic effect. My 2 cents, now gotta focus on work.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am

Martinibomb:

@WR totalllly! 100%
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am
Rich in Washington:

I'm hoping someday we can look at these things in a historical context, rather than a hysterical context (and yeah, I'm aware that the former in my pun is also problematic).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15am
chresti:

WR, wise 2 cents.
  11:17am
Martinibomb:

I dont know if I'm miss remembering this but from my childhood I remember the right-wing types trying to erase the nword from mark twain but now it seem like more of a left wing effort - did the parties flip on this stuff?? I think I just remember it wrong cause.. child brain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am
Rich in Washington:

ironybread and I were talking about this very thing the night before last - lamenting that much of Firesign Theatre's radio output would be rather problematic in today's climate, their take on memes regarding racial stereotypes, which they were making fun of, rather than reifying. Lots of that stuff probably couldn't be played today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am

ironybread?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
Jan Turkenburg:

WR, you're right. Ada was singing about a Jew in Amsterdam. I didn't got all the words but I knowMax van Praag, a Jewish holocaust surviver spent the rest of his life telling jokes based on Jewish stereo types. Of course if anyone was entitled to do that it was him and not Ada Jones... another two cents...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am
Rich in Washington:

There's no way I could play Firesign radio shows at my other station today, but ten years ago when I produced a show re-running their Dear Friends (etc) series, someone actually stormed the air room and interrupted a broadcast because of a bit they were doing where they were aping bad yellowface depictions from 40s movies.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am

Ah, should of known..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am
Rich in Washington:

ironybread is a blogger and music collector. he's also the official audio archivist for Firesign Theatre, Duck's Breath Mystery Theater, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21am
Lizardner Dave 2:

You're remembering correctly Martinibomb. I don't know how old you are but I'm in my 50's and in my college years up through my 30's it was the left that was fighting for the ability to use any words any where in the name of mocking them and removing their power. The belief was if we all laughed at stereotypes that people would realize they're ridiculous and it would make a better world. The current younger generation has taken the opposite approach and God bless them, it's going to be their world for a lot longer than it'll be ours so let them have at it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am
chresti:

Cool!@Rich
  Swag For Life Member 11:22am
WR:

MB, more like morally conservative types wanting to bowdlerize Twain's work in general. Making them "kid safe"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
spodiodi:

*sigh*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am
Rich in Washington:

I remember the debate, whether to remove the problematic language or leave it and note its context, time, etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am
Feldpausch:

@Lizardner like the way the British have skillfully "taken the piss" out of words like 'see-you-next-tuesday' by using it all the time

Commenting on Louis Armstrong from a hour ago (sorry, I was driving!) - sure sounded like scat singing to me, years if not decades before Ella, who usually gets the credit for inventing it. Now I loves me some Ella, but we should have known that Satchmo got there first?

Oh and: by all means play any record you want. I give credit to our audience for being intelligent enough to understand the historical context from which it came. But maybe not say it? Just say “n word” when back-announcing.
