Yeah, I was not familiar with Polte before, had not noticed he wrote three of the compositions on that album.

Ron Polte was a street mechanic and former petty criminal before he became Quicksilvers manager.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03pm

  11:07pm

Trump is by no means a monster of a different order. He is a massively embarrassing public figure, but not at all unlike status quo America. We should not seek leaders who merely politely fuck us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07pm
Franco Twinkie:

I agree WR, but I like to look at things to see just how frightening they are. And at this quivering moment our collective future everything is so bad that I like to aware of the horror that awaits me whenever I leave the house

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm
coelacanth∅:

he's very different than his predecessors; but i'm not convinced he's the total buffoon that he appears. it might be part of a rather grand plan, evolved from the scheme started just before reagan. reagan's schtick was similar in some ways. trump's buffoonery may be calculated; or those pulling the strings chose him because of his authentic buffoonery.

I know what you mean, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18pm
Sam Segal:

My pleasure, WR. Glad the guy from Canary Records turned me on to her.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23pm
Sam Segal:

I find Trump as repugnant as the next person, but if you want to compare body counts, he's got nothing on George W. Bush. The Iraq War killed upwards of a million people. Not that Trump hasn't caused a great deal of misery, hardship, and unnecessary death, but misery, hardship, and unnecessary death is pretty much par for the course for any American president...Trump's just less polite about it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm
Franco Twinkie:

He is the catalyst for something that has the potential to be much more destructive than his predecessors. Those dipshits are in the rear view mirror. The magnitude of his effect is something that is yet unknowable.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm
Sam Segal:

I see what you mean, Franco. You could certainly be right.
  11:27pm
Dean:

Sorry. Had to prompt my daughter to brush her teeth.

Who's this bad? You suggest Pol Pot? That's patently absurd. I would suggest, well, Barack Obama, who authorized the murder of thousands of innocents. (Yes, Trump has bettered him in that regard.) George W. Bush, who inaugurated endless unofficial wars with which Trump *at least* claimed he disagreed.

But Americans are a very sensitive people. We're all about appearances, and frankly, we always have been. Trump embarrasses us. Rightly so, but the very fact of Article II should embarrass us, as it did some of the founders whose opinions failed to prevail. We should not have *a* president.

Americans are also like to pretend that their difficulties are potentially "more destructive" than those in other countries, another instance of Americans thinking they are exceptionally burdened.
  11:28pm
Dean:

Oy...^ also like to pretend...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
Franco Twinkie:

Is it that his evil is just more transparent? He relishes in letting everybody know he is their worst nightmare.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:29pm
coelacanth∅:

that's definitely true. (@1124) but it also validates my point. trump wouldn't be able to get away with what he does if reagan, and then the bushes, hadn't opened those doors.
  11:30pm
Dean:

No. It is that he is an embarrassing, buffoonish, ignorant imbecile. We Americans shudder at the thought of having to be represented by him. It's about us, not him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31pm
Franco Twinkie:

We can't do anything about the demons in power elsewhere. Here we can.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
Michael 98145:

And demons keep popping up all over the world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean you're speaking for yourself i guess, but you are not speaking for me and therefore not speaking for many others as well.
i'm not slightly concerned about "embarrassment".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm
Franco Twinkie:

Like fungus after it rains they do.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:34pm

Ali Onda was pretty amazing.

Thought from my paper on Under Armour:

The minute I as a person begin to value something that is void of value, like emotion, human spirit, or the self. My window for personal satisfaction begins to unconsciously close.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm

I will do whatever i can to promote education. Everywhere. Not that i can do all that much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:36pm
coelacanth∅:

Natalia ain't so shabby either
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Sam Segal:

Glad you both dug him. Aki Onda is a remarkable live performer, if you get the chance to see him. I watched him spin marbles around inside a cymbal with a contact mic inside, and it was mesmerizing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37pm
Michael 98145:

@coel, agreed
  11:37pm
Dean:

coelacanth∅: I hear you, but note that I'm not speaking for myself, either, inasmuch as virtually all POTUS embarrass me, which is why I don't think Trump is special. I do note, however, that criticism of Trump tends to hover around his violation of "norms," which is another way of saying that he is gauche (which he is). But that's not a substantive disagreement. It's hard substantially to distinguish his administration from previous ones. He is carrying on the legacy of the presidency that *we* have permitted, perhaps even desired.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm
Sam Segal:

Something wonky going on with that Natalia Lafourcade file. Apologies for the skips. Will play more of her music in the future without skips!
  11:39pm
Dean:

Put another way, we would have tolerated Obama's implementation of virtually the same policies we see from Trump, merely because Obama is a smart, charismatic guy. That doesn't reflect well on us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
Sam Segal:

Couldn't agree more, Dean.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm
doctorjazz:

The scary thing is the Trump minions, his right wing followers. There's truth that Republicans have been great at "Dog whistles" since at least Nixon (and also true that Democrats, while better in comparison, have pulled some bad stuff as well). But his Pied piper routine, bringing out armed Proud Boys, is really scary (yes, the armed Right was around in the 90s, but they seem almost mainstream now).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm
doctorjazz:

Obama did get labeled the Deporter in Chief) before Trump took his title.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm
Sam Segal:

The seeming affirmation of the Proud Boys during the debate last night was definitely concerning, Doc. Agreed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm
doctorjazz:

Like the wind down, Sam (glad I was able to make it for the whole show for a change).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm
Michael 98145:

'night, all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
coelacanth∅:

Dean my concern is just as it was under reagan, only we're that many steps farther down the well now, and the training toward sheepdom that began under reagan has been very successful. we're 13cm from a 1984 type of scenario and if those in power decide to make it so it will be so. there's nothing we can do about it now.

...and yeah again - i would not have tolerated obama or anyone else doing the same things.
(...and i didn't trust obama)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48pm
Franco Twinkie:

Dean, admittedly I am as gauche as they come, but aside from voting when it's presented to me as a luxury activity, I do nothing to influence public policy with far reaching effects. He does. Gauche is about as consequential as wearing mismatched socks. It's everything else he does that's so troubling.

  11:52pm
Dean:

I can't agree with you more, Franco. That's my point. The main complaint about Trump is the mere stupid fact that he's a nitwit. That fact embarrasses Americans. Reagan, at least, according to some, had a gift for oratory. (I fail to see it.) Accordingly, even if his policies were monstrous, at least he was "presidential." And now we revise favorably our opinions of W. Bush, because he could form more complete sentences than the current POTUS. Are we idiots, or what?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
Franco Twinkie:

The bar is low indeed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm
coelacanth∅:

dr j @1140 right...lest we hide our heads in the sand that all the overtly racist and otherwise hateful and intolerant shit that seems so pervasive now would not be so if trump weren't in office.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
coelacanth∅:

these folks would be racist (etc) anyway but now they're not compelled to check themselves.
they are accepted.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm
doctorjazz:

Hearing Reagan speak always sent the same shivers down my spine as Trump (Bush too). But, point well taken, Obama could package things better (while he did some bad stuff, he didn't match the GOP Prez bunch)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm
Franco Twinkie:

Absolutely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm
doctorjazz:

Trump said at the debate that Racial Sensitivity Training was a racist idea (racist against white folks). And he's selling it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm
coelacanth∅:

Thank you Doctor! agreed on all points
  11:59pm
Dean:

Right, and yet the "not as bad as" move only goes so far. It does not mitigate the damage that Dem presidents cause merely because the Dem caused "less." It's policy, and it becomes precedent. Hence Obama's monstrosity.

Racial Sensitivity Training is unmitigated bullshit. It will set back anti-racist progress in ways we will deeply regret.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm
coelacanth∅:

when reagan was up for reelection i visited my mother one day. she had a tv on in the kitchen and she turned it down so we could talk.

But they are germane, Franco. They establish precedents that become difficult to adjust.

Okay, I *love* the Jarrett trio, I miss Peacock, and I'm happy that WFMU is playing tracks from their huge catalog, much of which I hold in my collection, because, damn, they were exquisite.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am
coelacanth∅:

of course, Franco. but if some people don't realise how bad things are they need to be educated; and getting things into perspective helps with that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am
doctorjazz:

Not familiar with the content of Racial Sensitivity Training, you could be right. Dean. But the idea is that America is the best, most perfect place, never did a racist thing, and people who point out it's history are traitors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:05am

  12:06am

That has never been the idea, doctorjazz. Did you notice that the much lauded NYT 1619 Project quietly recanted its most extreme position, namely that America's founding was the eponymous year? It was an absurd notion from the outset. Asserting it does nothing for anti-racism.
