@BadBob: To be clear, I don't think WKCR should be replaced, either! Early in the pandemic, the regular jazz djs were making heroic efforts to broadcast live from the studio. Then the university shut the campus down, radio station included. They kept broadcasting, but Schaapless and pre-recorded only. That kind of took the wind out of it for me. I look forward to their resumption of live broadcasting. Meanwhile double-props to everyone at WFMU for staying independent and on the air.

Thanks, Storkeleh, been called a know it all in much worse ways.

Got much of my music education on WKCR. I can see how they could be covered by the pandemic. They're mostly students (purchasing home broadcasting gear would be expensive for them). And the last I heard, Schapp was pretty ill.
Avatar 1:09pm
Der Storkenweiser:

I meant that with all affection and respect, doctorjazz! You and so many others make this already wonderful gig a weekly trip to the planet Ecstatica. I'm so sorry to hear that Phil Schapp is ill. That guy is a treasure, for all his little faults. Is it Covid?

The last time I heard Professor Schaap on the air was, I think, in late March, or early April. He'd been coming in to do "Traditions in Swing" live on Saturday evenings, with assurances that he was as safe in the studio as he would be at home. (Sharif Abdus-Salaam and Sid Gribbets had been coming in as well.) There was something really moving about his observance of the tradition of Traditions in Swing during the time of COVID that, in my mind, connected with that music's perseverance through suffering. Then the campus shut down, and his voice was gone. He didn't seem to be recording shows from home. (I hope this was obstinance, rather than illness.) He more or less sat out their Charlie Parker centennial broadcast, a weeklong holiday that he more or less created. The absence from it of his voice was, and will be, irreplacable.

damn, the last time i hard Phil Schaap on live radio was c.2001, before i moved out of range. i listened to him a lot though, especially late 80s>late 90s.
i recorded some specials on cassette, including at least 10 full tapes of a week-long(?) Billie Holiday tribute.
i sure hope he recovers.

Still, good days are few; however I'm staying with the Jazz.

With Billie, depends which Billie you want to listen to. The Verve Billie is mostly the world weary, worn down, pained, drug addled version. Earlier recordings are lighter, smoother. Love them all, but very different experience.

Schapp's site has been selling stuff for a long time (stay away because it's usually tempting).
Listened to his shows all the time years back. In recent years or got harder to listen. He'd play a half hour of great music, but then talk about it for an hour. His anger at young folks for not knowing about any of the artists would also come through (probably a downside of teaching at Columbia). It became difficult to stay with.

@docjazz @coelacanth For me it's Billie's 30s recordings with Lester in particular. They both have such lonesome sounds by themselves. Together, they sound *together,* in a way they maybe don't elsewhere. I credit Phil Schaap with getting me to pay attention to those sides…

I told this before, but I'll try to keep it short. I went to see Keith Jarrett at the Village Vanguard years back. Club was filled with noisy tourists who wouldn't stop talking. Jarrett sat down, played a few minutes, stopped. Did this 3 times, didn't speak. Then got up, show over. While I hate the loud, inconsiderate attendees, I was angry at him for years, wouldn't see him again. Now,. Of course, I'm sorry, bit off my nose...

the world-weary Billie sounded tired, but there's another factor of that transformation from the "innocent" and genuine young(er) Billie. i suppose it was her managers or record company said you need to keep doing that thing you do, then her beautiful idiosyncrasies became forced and cliché.

The guy is a theater director, pretty famous at that. But he has only contempt for dance, and is very fond of himself. It's just sad that I had to endure his self-love fest and couldn't show my appreciation for Kaori Ito (because of the curfew and incoming lockdown)

@coelacanth Yeah, everything Teddy Wison did was so classy… what's not to love? I imagine there was a lot to pull Billie down: personal demons, the record business, substance abuse, and maybe subsuming them all, the treatment visited on a unique and brilliant black woman artist who tried to follow her own lights.
